In autumn 2023, Poor Genetic Material released the album ‘Elswhere’. This additional release was with a smaller line-up. The band remains in its full line-up. ‘Possibilities’ is their new album. This album has not only the band’s signature elements, but also new ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title track has a very soft, instrumental intro. Slowly it gets louder, the atmosphere remains special. There are several gradual turns. The first words sound after more than 2.30 minutes. These almost melt together with the music. After an unexpected turn, there is a special melange between the (stacked) vocals and the sometimes mysterious music. Yet vocals and music remain in balance. During an instrumental piece, there is flute playing. Just after this, this opening track ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Rain’ starts with acoustic guitar sounds. The turn to more pace and volume is sudden, but well chosen. After the music slows down, the subdued vocals start. The (stacked) vocals and music have a pleasant flow.
Not only the vocals and music form a unity, the instruments between them are also well balanced. A number of twists and turns, and the differences in styles are intriguing. There are light classical elements, as well as electronic sounds added. ‘A Spark Of Ideas’ also has mysterious elements. In addition, the song is complexly constructed. The bass is pleasantly present. After a pleasantly rocking piece, the sudden ending is surprising. A quiet start to ‘Old Buffoon’ is followed by an accessible rhythm, the melody fitting in nicely.
The upbeat atmosphere soon sticks in your head. Martin Griffiths (of Beggars Opera) is the guest vocalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The keyboards have an important part at the start of ‘An Island In Time’.
The sound of the different keyboard instruments is diverse. This variation can also be heard in the guitar playing. Again, the diversity and details within one track stand out positively. The slightly poppy elements ensure det this complex epic remains accessible. There are nice extended instrumental pieces in which you keep hearing something new. The ending is quite unexpected. ‘Contingency’ has a pleasant, calm flow in the beginning. The first turn to more pace and volume is quite predictable. This is followed by several (unexpected) twists and turns. As in previous tracks, there is not only variety of musical styles, but also an alternation between vocal and instrumental pieces. This last song extinguishes nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had already mentioned the guitar playing and keyboards. But the bass and drums also deserve praise: they are much more than “just” rhythm section. There is so much to listen to in the music alone that the lyrics might initially pass you by. There are various choral and backing vocal arrangements, the sound of the (choral) vocals often stands out positively. The lyrics are presented in a well-crafted lyric booklet. It does take a while to really get to know the complexly constructed songs. The balance between complexity and accessibility is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
