Uriah Heep is bijna 50 jaar geleden opgericht. Veel fans hebben de eerste jaren helemaal niet, of niet bewust meegemaakt. Ze hebben tientallen albums op hun naam staan. ‘Living the dream’ is hun nieuwste studioalbum.
‘Grazed By Heaven’ heeft een lekker rockende start. Bernie Shaw heeft, zoals we weten, een heerlijke stem en een duidelijke uitspraak. Het tempo van deze openingstrack is heerlijk opzwepend, al snel heb ik aantal keer op de + toets van het geduwd. De muziek staat hier inmiddels behoorlijk hard. Phil Lanzon laat er zijn toetsen heerlijk door heen vliegen.
A-capella zang zorgt voor een mooie opening van de titeltrack. De muziek van ‘Living The Dream’ is zo gemaakt dat je mee wil zingen. Het drumwerk van Russell Gilbrook zorgt voor een leuke wending. De snaren banen zich hier prima een weg doorheen. Doordat verdere wendingen even uitblijven valt Uriah Heep een beetje in herhaling. Het einde is verrassend klein gespeeld.
De tekst van ‘Take Away My Soul’ bevat enkele clichés en is daardoor wat voorspelbaar. Het zingt wel makkelijk mee, maar de woorden raken me niet echt. Het gillend gitaarspel van Mick Box tijdens een instrumentaal stuk is fantastisch.
‘Knocking At My Door’ is ook een goed en heerlijk opzwepend nummer. Toch krijg ik het gevoel dat deze rockers een beetje te veel op safe gespeeld hebben.
’Rocks In The Road’ heeft een pakkend intro. Even lijkt het erop dat ze als het ware voortborduren op de voorgaande tracks. Toch past alles goed in elkaar, en het basloopje van Davey Rimmer is super. Dit uptempo stuk krijgt een gave wending. Nu ben ik geraakt door zang en muziek. Er volgen verschillende veranderingen in de muziek. Ze zijn allemaal verrassend. Alleen de laatste paar seconden zijn wat voorspelbaar.
‘Waters Flowin’ start rustig, met zang en een vleugje muziek. Dan vallen de andere zangers zijn. De verschillende stemmen passen uitstekend bij elkaar.
Het geeft een rustige, maar meeslepende flow. Op het laatst is de zang heel even zo goed als solo, gevolgd door pianospel. Wat een gave track!
Na dit rustige einde is het contrast met ‘It’s All Been Said’ vrij groot. Weer word ik geraakt door een rustig stuk. Met de toetsen gaan we ‘back to rock’. Phil vliegt over zijn toetsen heen, de snaren zijn vrij zwaar bespeeld. Het tempo van het drumwerk ligt soms behoorlijk hoog. Maar Russell houdt ook enkele korte rusten aan. Geweldig gespeeld! Er zijn nog een paar fantastische tempo-en volumewisselingen.
‘Goodbye To Innocence’ en ‘Falling Under Your Spell’ zijn lekkere tracks om luidkeels mee te brullen.
De structuur van ‘Dreams Of Yesteryear’ is weer verrassender. Er is een mooie opbouw naar een wegstervend einde.
Tijdens een aantal nummers zijn deze rockers een beetje te voorzichtig geweest wat betreft de opbouw. De drums klinken soms mooi vol en rond, maar helaas her en der ook wat te vlak van geluid. ‘Living the dream’ is een heerlijk album om flink hard af te spelen. Uriah Heep heeft bewezen dat een band van bijna een halve eeuw oud nog steeds springlevend kan zijn.

Grazed By Heaven‘ has a nice rocking start. Bernie Shaw has, as we know, a wonderful voice and a clear pronunciation. The pace of this opening track is wonderfully exhilarating, soon I have several times on the + key of it pushed. The music here is now quite loud. Phil Lanzon lets his keys fly through it wonderfully.
A-capella vocals provide a nice opening of the title track. The music of ‘Living The Dream‘ is made in such a way that you want to sing along. The drums of Russell Gilbrook provide a nice twist. The strings make their way through it. Because there are no further twists Uriah Heep is a bit repetitive. The end is played surprisingly small.
The text of ‘Take Away My Soul‘ contains some clichés and is therefore somewhat predictable. It does sing along easily, but the words don’t really touch me. The screaming guitar playing of Mick Box during an instrumental piece is fantastic.
Knocking At My Door‘ is also a good and wonderfully exhilarating song. Still I get the feeling that these rockers played a bit too much on safe.
Rocks In The Road‘ has a catchy intro. For a moment it looks like they build on the previous tracks. Yet everything fits together well, and the bass run of Davey Rimmer is super. This uptempo piece gets a nice twist. Now I am touched by vocals and music. There follow several changes in the music. They are all surprising. Only the last few seconds are a bit predictable.
Waters Flowin‘ starts quietly, with vocals and a touch of music. Then fall the other singers are. The different voices fit together perfectly.
It gives a quiet, but compelling flow. In the end the vocals are as good as solo, followed by piano playing. What a great track!
After this quiet end the contrast with ‘It’s All Been Said‘ is quite large. Again I am touched by a quiet piece. With the keys we go ‘back to rock‘. Phil flies over his keys, the strings are quite heavily played. The tempo of the drumming is sometimes quite high. But Russell also keeps some short rests. Great played! There are still a few fantastic tempo and volume changes.
Goodbye To Innocence‘ and ‘Falling Under Your Spell‘ are nice tracks to roar along loudly.
The structure of ‘Dreams Of Yesteryear‘ is more surprising. There is a beautiful construction towards a dying end.
During a number of songs these rockers have been a bit too cautious about the structure. The drums sometimes sound full and round, but unfortunately here and there also a bit too flat in sound. Living the dream‘ is a great album to play hard. Uriah Heep has proven that a band of almost half a century old can still be alive and kicking.
