Singer/guitarist Óskar Logi Ágústsson founded rock band The Vintage Caravan in 2006, he was only twelve at the time. He is the only one who hasn’t left The Vintage Caravan. Fortunately, band changes have not been too frequent, allowing these Icelanders to develop together. Their new album is called “Monuments” and will be released on April 16. This fifth album features eleven varied psychedelic/progressive rock songs. This trio also adds blues/rock influences. Through their life experience they have grown lyrically, which is also reflected in the emotion in song and music.

‘Whispers’ opens wonderfully uplifting, this immediately calls for the music to be turned up a bit louder.
The structure is accessible, and Óskar’s pronunciation is quite clear. This allows you to quickly sing along with the chorus of this opening track. The intro of ‘Crystallized’ is calmer, but even in this blues-related track the rhythm becomes catchy. Although this song has an upbeat atmosphere, the lyrics do contain a warning to tourists not to ignore the warnings about Iceland’s treacherous snowstorms. Not only does the guitar playing come to the fore from time to time, but the rhythm section is also well represented. Alexander Örn Númason’s bass is pleasantly present and the drumming is also great.
The music becomes quiet and slowly dies away along with the sound of the storm.

The subdued start and the emotion on Óskar’s voice immediately count me in ‘This One’s For You’. He wrote this song for his brother who passed away in 2018. Stefán Ari Stefánsson drums beautifully softly, maintaining the impact of this ballad. The instrumental piece and the first sentences that come after this, touch me even more. The chorus is sung small and lovingly, so it ends on a positive felling. This is the perfect place just about in the middle of the album. There is a nice short moment of silence before ‘Forgotten’. The pace is quite fast at times, but the dynamics are kept. There are nice changes in tempo and volume, and the ratio of instrumental to vocal is fine. All the songs have a good ending, but this one is a lot of fun.

Surprisingly, ‘Hell’ has a quiet intro, pretty soon this seems to have an uptempo continuation. Appearances are deceptive, as tempo and volume drop slightly again. Although the lyrics are not that cheerful, the overall atmosphere is optimistic. The backing vocals is a fine addition. The wordless vocals invite one to sing along loudly. On CD the energy already comes alive, during a live show it will of course be even more intense. The sensitive vocals fit nicely with the lovely, harmonious melody of ‘Clarity’. You can feel that the wordless vocals will be sung along when this is played live. Slowly the music becomes more intense, the guitar playing is compelling and rocking at the same time. The wordless vocals return, and a little later this beautifully constructed song ends on a small note. When the CD ends, the atmosphere of this last song lingers for a while.

‘Monuments’ has a good balance between rhythm and melody, and the division between the instruments is also very good. Due to the structure of verse/chorus, parts of some songs are a bit predictable. But each song has more than enough details and changes to keep them interesting. Not only do the songs have a nice intro, the the outros are good as well. The Vintage Caravan’s retro rock connects with young and old.
The lyrics are not too complicated, but certainly not cliché mediocre. This makes singing along with the rousing songs inviting.

The Vintage Caravan – Monuments
