The Rods bestaan 35 jaar. Deze Amerikaanse band speelt classic heavy metal. Dit trio was in de jaren ’80 behoorlijk productief. Daarna bleef het heel lang stil. In 2011 brachten de hun album Vengeance uit.
En nu is hun nieuwste album ‘Brotherhood Of Metal’ uit, dit album start met de titelrack. Deze begint onverwacht met pianoklanken, rustig en kalm. De zachte, bijna heldere zang van David “Rock” Feinstein past hier goed bij. De woorden die hij zingt zijn mooi, de muziek is verrassend goed opgebouwd. Natuurlijk nemen tempo en volume toe. Het vocale volume van David gaat mee met de muziek, daarbij laat hij zijn gitaar heerlijk gillen. In de metalrock die ze laten horen is de bas van Gary Bordonaro lekker aanwezig. Carl Canedy laat een prima staaltje drumwerk horen. Het vervolg is opzwepend, maar wel vrij voorspelbaar, waardoor je de tekst als vanzelf mee schreeuwt. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met prima instrumentale stukken. Dit is een ijzersterke openingstrack!
‘Everybody’s Rockin‘ start rockend. Het geluid van de cimbalen is hier te dof. Toch blijft deze track opzwepend. De opbouw is wat meer recht toe recht aan. Door deze voorspelbaarheid zijn er niet heel veel verrassingen, ook niet in de nummers die hierop volgen. De structuur is over het algemeen couplet-refrein, maar pakkend is het wel. De teksten zijn vrij eenvoudig van opzet. Dit nodigt uit om mee te zingen met deze aangename no nonsens metal/rock nummers. Alles bij elkaar vormt dit een ‘lekkere bak herrie’, die flink luid mag klinken. Zo nu en dan is er heerlijk toetsenwerk te horen, bijvoorbeeld in ‘Smoke On The Horizon’.
Het begin van ‘Party All Night’ is door het intro van drum en bas veel belovend. Dit vervaagt door het aantal herhalingen van de tekst. Dit nummer moet het hebben van de instrumentale stukken, want qua tekst hoor je hoofdzakelijk ‘Party all night’. In ‘Tonight We Ride’ is de opbouw gelijkwaardig aan de voorgaande nummers. Al zitten er enkele korte stukjes in die iets langzamer gespeeld zijn. Ook de nummers die hierop volgen passen prima in dit rijtje van positieve, maar vrij eenvoudig opgezette muziek. Nadeel is wel dat je wellicht wat variatie mist. De orgelklanken in ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ zorgen even voor wat verandering, dit is van harte welkom. Tot slot ‘Evil In Me’. De metalrock is weer opzwepend, de toetsen zijn ook hier aanwezig. Doordat deze slottrack wat langer is, kunnen we genieten van goed opgebouwde instrumentale stukken, waarin er tijd is voor variatie. Zo eindigt dit album toch nog verrassend.
Alle elf nummers zijn prima gespeeld en gezongen. De structuur van de meeste nummers is eenvoudig en pakkend. De titeltrack steekt er met kop en schouders bovenuit. Als The Rods gaan touren, zullen ze vast voor een fantastische live beleving zorgen.

The soft, almost clear vocals of David “Rock” Feinstein fits this well. The words he sings are beautiful, the music is surprisingly well constructed. Of course, the tempo and volume increase. David’s vocal volume goes along with the music, and he makes his guitar scream. Gary Bordonaro’s bass is nicely present in the metal rock they play. Carl Canedy shows a fine example of drumming. The sequel is exhilarating, but quite predictable, which makes you shout the lyrics as if by themselves. Vocal parts are alternated with fine instrumental parts. This is a very strong opening track!
‘Everybody’s Rockin‘ starts rocking. The sound of the cymbals is too dull here. Yet this track remains exciting. The structure is a bit more straightforward. Because of this predictability there are not many surprises, not even in the songs that follow. The structure is generally couplet-refrain, but it is catchy. The texts are quite simple. This invites you to sing along with these pleasant no-nonsense metal/rock songs. All in all, this forms a ‘nice bunch of noise’, which may sound quite loud. Every now and then you can hear wonderful keyboard work, for example in ‘Smoke On The Horizon‘.
The beginning of ‘Party All Night‘ is very promising because of the intro of drum and bass. This fades due to the number of repetitions of the lyrics. The instrumental parts are the most beautiful part of this song, because in terms of lyrics you can mainly hear ‘Party all night‘. In ‘Tonight We Ride‘ the structure is equal to the previous songs. Although there are some short pieces in it that have been played a bit slower. The songs that follow also fit perfectly into this list of positive, but fairly simple build-up of music. Disadvantage is that you might miss some variation. The organ sounds in ‘The Devil Made Me Do It‘ make some changes, this is very welcome. Finally, ‘Evil In Me‘. The metalrock is exciting again, the keyboards are also present here. Because this final track is a bit longer, we can enjoy well-constructed instrumental pieces, in which there is time for variation. This is how this album ends surprisingly.
All eleven songs are played and sung well. The structure of most of the songs is simple and catchy. The title track stands out from the crowd with its head and shoulders. When The Rods go on tour, they will surely provide a fantastic live experience.
