About 8 years ago the super rock band The Dead Daisies was formed. There have been some changes in the line-up. What remained was that the band consists of rock veterans, and that they make catchy ‘high-voltage’ rock albums. Their new album is called ‘Holy Ground’, now bassist Glenn Hughes has the lead vocals. Doug Aldrich and David Lowy are the guitarists, and Dane Castronovo is behind the drums. The first few seconds of ‘Holy Ground (Shake The Memory)’ are quiet, then it goes full throttle. This is great old school rock. The volume changes and the details give it just that little extra. Of course, you hear plenty of fiery guitar play, but the bass is also pleasantly present. This delicious opening track dies away nicely on the strings.

‘Like No Other (Bassline)’ has an awesome bass groove and great drumming. This was definitely written to be played live. The cool vocals are a bit raw and ‘weathered’. The backing vocals are maybe a bit too clean for a rock song. But that is quickly forgotten by Glenn’s funky bass playing. The ingredients of the songs that follow are more or less the same: Exciting rock, lots of blasting guitars, a great rhythm section and a nice rock voice. The slightly predictable structure of the songs is broken by nice surprises and or details. These veterans still know how to convince with their delicious uncomplicated hard rock. Every song has a nice surprise, sometimes right at the end like ‘Come Alive’.

‘My Fate’ is one of the slower rock songs. Both the quietly sung parts and the powerfully sung parts are convincing. Vocals and music are constantly in harmony, the whole thing is compelling and exhilarating at the same time. Especially the chorus invites you to sing along loudly. Also, the songs that come after that you sing along pretty soon. They are clearly written to give you a fantastic vibe live. It is already clear that the build-up to the end of the exhilarating ‘Saving Grace’ will probably last longer during a concert. Catchy rock is alternated with quieter pieces in ‘Unspoken’. With these changes, The Dead Daisies ensure that every song remains exciting. Moreover, this song ends very nicely. The first part of ‘Far Away’ is lovely small, sung and played. In the background you can hear the occasional soft sound of string instruments. Tempo and volume of vocals and music slowly increase. During an instrumental piece, the guitar plays sounds far away at first. A little later you can hear the ‘string instruments’ again in the background. The transition to a small played part is very beautiful. The sweet chorus is a bit predictable. But what does that matter? The whole thing is convincingly sung and played. The build-up to the end is swirling, and heavier than you would expect for this song. The end itself extinguishes nicely.
‘Holy Ground’ consists of 11 songs that are composed with attention to detail. There are no boring fade-outs, several songs even end in an original way. There are nice elements woven into every song. Okay, ’30 Days In The Hole’ has quite a lot of repeats, but it is catchy. If you’re ever in a bad mood, put this album on and your bad mood will disappear like snow in the sun.

The Dead Daisies – Holy Ground

Zo’n 8 jaar geleden werd de super rockband The Dead Daisies opgericht. Er zijn een aantal veranderingen geweest in de bezetting. Wat bleef was dat de band uit rock veteranen bestaat, en dat ze pakkende ‘high-voltage’ rock albums maken. Hun nieuwe album heet ‘Holy Ground’, nu heeft bassist Glenn Hughes de leadzang. Doug Aldrich en David Lowy zijn de gitaristen, en Deen Castronovo zit achter het drumstel. De eerste paar seconden van ‘Holy Ground (Shake The Memory)’ zijn rustig, dan gaat het gas erop. Dit is lekker opzwepende old school rock. De volumeverschillen en de details geven net dat extra’s wat het nodig heeft. Natuurlijk hoor je volop gillend gitaarspel, maar de bas is ook aangenaam aanwezig. Deze heerlijke openingstrack sterft mooi weg op de snaren.

‘Like No Other (Bassline)’ heeft een vette basgroove en heerlijk drumwerk. Dit is duidelijk geschreven om live te spelen. De gave vocalen uithalen zijn een beetje rauw en doorleefd. De achtergrondzang is misschien iets te braaf voor een rocksong. Maar dat is door het funky bas spel van Glenn weer snel vergeten. De ingrediënten van de nummers die volgen zijn ongeveer hetzelfde: Lekker opzwepende rock, veel gillende gitaren, een heerlijke ritmesectie en een lekkere rockstem. De licht voorspelbare opbouw van de nummers wordt doorbroken door leuke verrassingen en of details. Deze veteranen weten nog steeds te overtuigen met hun heerlijke ongecompliceerde hardrock. Ieder nummer wel een leuke verrassing, soms helemaal op het einde zoals bij ‘Come Alive’.

‘My Fate’ is één van de langzamere rock nummers. Zowel de rustig gezongen delen als de krachtig gezongen stukken zijn overtuigend. Zang en muziek zitten constant op één lijn, het geheel is meeslepend en opzwepend te gelijk. Vooral het refrein nodigt uit om luidkeels mee te zingen. Ook de nummers die hierna komen zing je al vrij snel mee. Ze zijn duidelijk geschreven om live voor een fantastische vibe te zorgen. Nu al is duidelijk dat de opbouw naar einde van het opzwepende ‘Saving Grace’ tijdens een concert zeer waarschijnlijk langer zal duren. Pakkende rock wordt in ‘Unspoken’ afgewisseld met rustigere stukjes. Met deze afwisselingen zorgen The Dead Daisies dat ieder nummer blijft boeien. Bovendien eindigt dit nummer gaaf. Het eerste stuk van ‘Far Away’ is klein gezongen en gespeeld. Op de achtergrond hoor je af en toe het zachte geluid van strijkinstrumenten. Tempo en volume van zang en muziek nemen langzaam toe. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk klinkt het gitaarspel in eerste instantie vrij ver weg. Even later hoor je weer de ‘strijkinstrumenten’ op de achtergrond. De overgang naar een klein gespeeld deel is erg mooi. Het zoete refrein is een beetje voorspelbaar. Maar ach wat geeft dat? Het geheel is overtuigend gezongen en meespelend gespeeld. De opbouw naar het einde toe is wervelend, en heavier dan je zou verwachten bij dit nummer. Het einde zelf dooft mooi uit.
‘Holy Ground’ bestaat uit 11 nummers die met zorg zijn samengesteld. Er zijn geen saaie fade-outs, diverse nummers eindigen zelfs origineel. In ieder nummer zitten er leuke elementen in verweven. Oké, ‘30 Days In The Hole’ heeft vrij veel herhalingen, maar pakkend is het wel. Mocht je ooit kwaaie zin hebben, zet dan dit album op en je slechte humeur verdwijnt als sneeuw voor de zon.
