Terra Nova – Raise your voice

Raise your voice is hun zevende album.

Terra Nova – Raise your voice

Terra Nova is a Dutch classic rock band. They have been influenced by, among others: Boston, Asia and Van Halen, this creates a mix of hard, soft and melodic rock. Raise your voice is their seventh album.

Fred Hendrix has a nice rock voice, he sings clearly. A few words, like crying, he speaks a bit strange. The words ‘Breathe in, breathe out‘ are sung along by the backing vocals. When played live, this invites you to sing along en masse. The text is a bit clichéd, which makes it easy to sing along. This opening song is quite simple, the positive vibe comes out well.
Be Who You Are‘ also has a positive lyrics, I think this will be an optimistic sounding album. During an instrumental piece Gesuino Derosas shows great guitar playing. The keys make for a dying end.

For some rock lovers the sound may be on the flutsy side, the rock doesn’t thunder, but is a bit poppy. Therefore it is accessible for a wider audience. The structure of the songs (couplet-refrein) contributes to the accessibility. There are no big surprises, the positive boast remains. If I have to describe this style in three words I choose ‘feel good rock’.

The title track has a fine rocking start. Within the song itself there are few changes in tempo and volume. Just like the previous songs, this song listens easily. In a lovely instrumental piece there are some surprises, these I would have liked to hear more often. For a moment there is a change, but the exciting character has remained. Then the catchy chorus returns in a predictable way.

The Other Side‘ starts with piano sounds, these miss the warm sound. But you can hear this warm sound in Fred’s voice, he can be heard word for word here. The music increases in volume and tempo, which takes a bit too much attention away from the vocals. The guitar playing is just too short to nestle under my skin. The background vocals are really in the background, yet it is fine added. If the structure of this ballad was less predictable, it would certainly have touched me. The text may be a bit sweet, but it has been brought with feeling.

After a few rocking songs there is another ballad: ‘Am I The Man‘. Fred’s voice has similarities with the ‘older’ voice of Dave Coverdale (among others Whitesnake). The sensitive text is sung credibly, and is supported by a little bit of music. Fred is vulnerable, his words may be a bit sweet, but they seem to come straight from the heart. Only after about 1.40 minutes Hans In ‘T Zandt takes his drumsticks, he drums a simple mid tempo. The instrumental piece is modest, this fits the whole. Just before the end you hear nice details on the cymbals, then it dies away nicely.

In ‘It’s Gonna Be Allright‘ you hear the voice of eight year old Jenna, Fred’s daughter. This bonus track is also a happy song.

The structure of these twelve songs is simple and quite predictable. If you are stressed or have a bad mood, set up ‘Raise your voice‘, and this feeling disappears like snow in the sun. These uncomplicated and unadulterated (pop) rock songs stay in your head for a long time. Moreover, they sing along quite easily. Played live, that will have even more impact, Terra Nova will put things on stilts.
