Crossing the Borders

Cindy Oudshoorn had de leadzang in ‘This town ain’t big enough for the both of us’, haar hoge uithaal was super.

Fans zongen even later spontaan en respectvol mee.

Hierdoor werd men geraakt in bijvoorbeeld ‘Father of the day, father of the night’.

De meest eigen versies was ‘Running up that hill’.

Thank you
Hopelijk staat Symfo Classics in december 2020 weer in De Bosuil in Weert.

Fizzy Symfo Classics closed a fantastic musical year in De Bosuil.

It may be called a tradition that Symfo Classics performs at the end of the year in De Bosuil. This was the last concert in De Bosuil before New Year’s Eve will be celebrated here, and also the last concert of this tour of Symfo Classics. The venue in Weert was well filled on this last Sunday of December, with a lot of people over 50. The lights in the hall dimmed for ‘Had a dream‘, Erwin Nyhoff with his bright high-pitched voice had the lead vocals here. During this opening song enjoyment already splashed off the stage.

Crossing the Borders
Martin van der Starre has a different voice colour, with a slightly rough edge, he did ‘Conquistador‘ a rock song by Procol Harum. Guitarist Rob Winter played a beautiful piece. Moments later he stepped aside, so everyone could not only hear but also see keyboardist Werner van Gool.
In ‘Don’t answer me‘ you missed a real saxophone, yet it was a beautiful version. After this Martin told why this tour is called ‘Crossing the Borders‘. Because not everything they played was symphonic rock, like ‘Tom Sawyer’ by Rush, that’s pure prog rock. Also ‘Mother‘ of Pink Floyd belongs to that category. Now only Erwin’s voice and his acoustic guitar sounded. You saw the emotion on his face and you heard it in his voice as well. Sjoerd Rutten grabbed drumsticks with soft tops and he made his cymbals jingle very gently. When he grabbed his regular drumsticks, he drummed modestly, so the impact of this beautiful ballad was preserved.

Cindy Oudshoorn had the lead vocals in ‘This town ain’t big enough for both of us‘, her high pitch was super. She moved elegantly and seductively, making a lot of eye contact with the audience. She just ‘played a game‘, she also involved Rob in this. Thus people not only had a lot to listen to, but also to watch.
Of course Jethro Tull was not to be missed, they played ‘Locomotive Breath‘, the twists and turns went flawlessly. Bass player Jan van Olffen had been standing in his corner all this time, but here he went to play in front of Sjoerd. Erwin and Rob stood fraternally next to each other. It was obvious that there was a bunch of friends performing here. Everyone visibly enjoyed the music and each other’s performance. There was absolutely no rivalry between the band members. Not even between the three fantastic vocalists, on top of that they sang all the lyrics by heart, respect!

Cheerful uptempo songs were interspersed with sensitive songs. Also songs with a message came by. Like ‘Question‘ by Moody Blues, this was an indictment of the war in Vietnam. Erwin played here on the twelve-string guitar, he had the lead vocals. In the harmony vocals with Cindy and Martin it was once again obvious how beautiful their voices blend. The minimalist piece was beautifully played and sung. Fans sang along spontaneously and respectfully a little later.

Hocus Pocus‘ was of course recognized by everyone. Without flute it was of course a different version, this mega hit was also enthusiastically welcomed.

Innuendo
After the break the familiar intro of ‘Innuendo‘ sounded, this became a duet with Cindy and Erwin. Rob alternated electric guitar playing with an acoustic guitar, he played the characteristic Spanish sounds. Jan clapped in rhythm with this. Symfo Classics had set the bar mega high for themselves to play all these well-known songs, but they did very well. They didn’t copy styles of performing of the original musicians, but they stayed true to themselves. The different emotions were well expressed in the varied set. Subdued where necessary, excited and cheerful where possible. This touched the audience for example in ‘Father of the day, father of the night‘. The atmosphere became very different due to ‘Pinball wizard‘ from the rock opera Tommy (The Who). Symfo Classics played covers, but they are professionals, you could see and hear that in everything. The sound was good quality and well balanced. There were some changes in the line-up. This caused a different energy on stage. One is not better than the other, but this is more lively. Sometimes a real violin, flute or other wind instruments were missing. This could largely have been solved with an Aerophone, a digital wind instrument.

The most unique version was ‘Running up that hill‘. Cindy sang high and beautifully quietly. When tempo and volume were built up a bit, it remained a very special, but magical performance. Erwin dedicated ‘Street spirit‘ to a passed away friend, this touched our hearts! Because of the diversity you regularly felt the change of atmosphere in the hall. The roof went off at ‘Don’t bring me down‘, after which the band left the stage.

Thank you
The first tones of the encore ‘Thank you‘ sounded. Admiration for playing especially this song by Led Zeppelin. Erwin sang every word convincingly. The small played part touched many people, they listened breathlessly, a few were moved to tears. Rightly a thunderous applause followed. Finally ‘Incommunicado‘ (Marillion) was played, this turned out to be a party. Almost the whole band stood around Werner, they all were shining. Martin wished us a happy new year and said “See you next year”. Hopefully Symfo Classics will be back in De Bosuil in Weert in December 2020.
