De alternatieve metal/prog rockband SIXforNinE werd 8 jaar geleden opgericht in Athene. Hun debuutalbum, Sixfornine, kreeg lovende reacties.
Nu is de opvolger ‘Parallel Universe’ uit.
Deze gaat a capella van start, de woorden zijn strak gezongen. Binnen 10 seconden komt de metal erbij, de ritmesectie komt hier goed naar voren.
De zang klinkt vervormd, het tempo in muziek ligt hoog. Als het tempo zakt en de muziek vriendelijker van karakter wordt, zijn de woorden van Fotis Benardo wel goed te verstaan. Vlagen van ritme en melodie blijven al snel in je hoofd kleven. Na een heerlijk instrumentaal stuk is er een gave rust van enkele seconden. Vlak voor het einde keert de vervormde zang nog even terug. De geluidskwaliteit is goed, maar er had meer verschil mogen zitten in de zwaardere stukken en de wat meer ‘vriendelijke’ delen. Dan had ‘Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining’ de impact gehad die hij verdient.

Ook in ‘Life‐Devouring Demons’ klinkt de zang regelmatig vervormd, daarnaast heeft de muziek soms een wat merkwaardige klank. Het past wel bij demonen, maar niet iedereen zal dit waarderen. Deze tweede track eindigt wel super vet!

Het intro van ‘Bullet Off Its Course’ is geweldig. De bas van Herc Booze is lekker aanwezig. De stem van Fotis komt hier mooi tot zijn recht.
Het tempo wordt opgekrikt tot een pakkende snelheid. Live gespeeld zal het helemaal opzwepende werking hebben. De snaren zijn zwaar bespeeld, daar heeft ook gitarist George Kapa zijn aandeel in. De vocale uithalen van Fotis zijn licht schor, wat heeft hij een mooie stem! Grote verrassingen blijven uit, maar toch klinkt het lekker.

Het fraaie, aparte begin van ‘More Than Words Can Say’ is te kort om de spanning op te bouwen. De verandering naar de (rock)metal verloopt niet soepel.
De verdere wendingen verlopen wel goed, zang en muziek passen goed bij elkaar. Fotis maakt indruk met zijn veelzijdige zang. De gestapelde stemmen zijn prima toegevoegd. Pete Outfox laat een lekker portie drumwerk horen.

‘Counting Stars (A Parallel Universe)’ heeft een mooie melodie en tegelijkertijd ook een aangenaam lazy ritme. Dit kabbelt zo een tijdje op ongeveer dezelfde manier voort. De stem van Fotis is vriendelijk van kleur, dit past bij de dromerige melodie. Er lijken wat psychedelische invloeden in verwerkt, tempo en volume blijven rustig en redelijk gelijkmatig. Langzaam wordt het iets zwaarder, groezeliger. Stukje bij beetje wordt het tempo opgevoerd. Dan ineens… is er de metal, inclusief grunts, top gedaan! Even blijft muziek wat steviger, dan is er een terugkeer naar rustige zang en muziek. Dit loopt mooi heen en weer in de koptelefoon, er zijn meerdere stemmen te horen. Vlak voor het einde is de zang a capella, met wegstervende echo. Wat een mooie track!

De snaren hebben in ‘Meditation : HyperJam’ een heerlijke groezelige klank. Toch is de zang meestal vriendelijk van toon, al zitten er ook enkele goed geplaatste schreeuwen tussen. De veranderingen in tempo en volume vloeien in elkaar over. Dit laatste nummer heeft een mooi, plotseling einde.

Er zijn voldoende tempo en volume wisselingen, maar ze zijn nogal eens voorspelbaar. Er mist soms een net wat finesse in de opbouw. Toch zit het geheel ingewikkelder in elkaar dan dat het in eerste instantie lijkt. Door de vleugjes psychedelica, stoner/doom die in de rock/metal verwerkt zitten is er wel de veelzijdigheid. Diverse nummers bevatten rusten. De zang is veelzijdig en bestaat zowel uit cleane zang als grunts. Basliefhebbers komen door de vette bas grooves niks te kort. De toegankelijke structuur maakt dat ‘Parallel Universe’ lekker weg luistert. Het is uitnodigend om de volumeknop verder open te zetten.

SIXforNinE – Parallel Universe

This one starts a cappella; the words are sung tightly. Within 10 seconds the metal is added, the rhythm section comes to the fore.
The vocals sound distorted, the tempo in music is high. When the tempo drops and the music becomes more friendly in character, the words of Fotis Benardo are quite understandable. Gusts of rhythm and melody quickly stick in your head. After a wonderful instrumental piece there is a cool rest of a few seconds. Just before the end the distorted vocals return. The sound quality is good, but there should have been more difference in the heavier pieces and the more ‘friendly’ parts. Then ‘Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining‘ would have had the impact it deserves.

Also in ‘Life-Devouring Demons‘ sounds the vocals regularly distorted, in addition, the music sometimes a bit peculiar sound. It suits demons, but not everyone will appreciate this. This second track ends super awesome!

The intro of ‘Bullet Off Its Course‘ is great. The bass of Herc Booze is nicely present. The voice of Fotis comes into its own here.
The tempo is being jacked up to a catchy speed. Played live, it will have an exciting effect. The strings are heavily played, guitarist George Kapa also has his contribution to that. The vocals of Fotis are light hoarse, what a beautiful voice he has! There are no big surprises, but it still sounds good.

The beautiful, unusual beginning of ‘More Than Words Can Say‘ is too short to build up the tension. The change to (rock)metal doesn’t go smoothly.
The rest of the twists and turns are going well, vocals and music fit well together. Fotis impresses with his versatile voice. The stacked voices have been added very well. Pete Outfox shows a nice portion of drumming.

Counting Stars (A Parallel Universe)‘ has a nice melody and at the same time a pleasant lazy rhythm. For a while this will continue to ripple in about the same way. The voice of Fotis is friendly in color, this suits the dreamy melody. There seem to be some psychedelic influences in processed, tempo and volume remain calm and fairly even. Slowly it becomes a bit heavier, more grubby. Little by little the tempo is increased. Then all of a sudden… the metal is there, including grunts, this is done perfectly! For a while music stays a bit heavier, then there is a return to quiet vocals and music. This runs nicely back and forth in the headphones, there are several voices to be heard. Just before the end is the singing a cappella, with fading echo. What a beautiful track!

The strings in ‘Meditation : HyperJam‘ have a lovely grubby sound. Still, the vocals are usually friendly in tone, although there are also some well-placed screams among them. The changes in tempo and volume flow into each other. This last song has a beautiful, sudden end.

There are enough tempo and volume changes, but they are sometimes predictable. Occasionally there is a lack of finesse in the structure. Yet the whole thing is more complicated than it seems at first ‘glance’. Because of the hints of psychedelics, stoner/doom in the rock/metal there is the versatility. Several songs contain rests. The vocals are versatile and consist of clean vocals as well as grunts. Bass lovers receive ear candy due to the fantastic bass grooves. The accessible structure makes that ‘Parallel Universe‘ listens well away. It is inviting to open the volume control further.
