Nog ‘even’ en de Finse symfonische metal band Nightwish bestaat 25 jaar. Het afgelopen seizoen deed de Nederlandse frontvrouw Floor Jansen mee aan de tv-show ‘Beste Zangers van Nederland’. De grote meerderheid van de kijkers kende Floor en Nightwish nog niet. Zij maakte enorme indruk met haar stem en heeft hierdoor veel kijkers een geheel andere kijk op dit genre gegeven, want metal is zoveel meer dan ‘alleen maar’ grunten. Nightwish is één van de grootste symfo metalbands en heeft heel terecht een grote schare fans. Live zijn ze ook steengoed. Dat hoop ik terug te horen op ‘Decades: Live In Buenos Aires’.
CD 1
Bij aanvang van het album hoor je al dat het een live concert is. De juichende fans zijn op de achtergrond te horen, zodat ze de ingetogen muziek van ‘Swanheart’ niet ‘overschreeuwen’. In ‘End Of All Hope’ komt de metal naar boven en horen we de begroeting van Floor naar de fans. In de openingstrack was het geluid vrij vlak, ik hoopte dat het nu beter zou klinken. Maar de overweldigende metal komt niet voldoende tot zijn recht. Natuurlijk is het moeilijk bij een live concert, maar toch..
De balans tussen zang en muziek is wel dik orde. Door het opzwepende effect van ‘Wish I Had An Angel’ gaat het volume hier flink omhoog. Je voelt dat dit een geweldig concert was. Na ‘Come Cover Me’ maakt Floor weer contact met de fans, deze reageren er dolenthousiast op. Dit heeft een wisselwerking naar Nightwish toe, er heerst duidelijk een geweldige sfeer. Floor heeft een enorme power op haar stem, bovendien is haar bereik keer op keer indrukwekkend, zelfs in deze oude nummers. Na een aantal opzwepende nummers is het tijd voor een beetje rust: ‘Dead Boy’s Poem’. Het volume wordt langzaam maar fantastisch opgebouwd. Ook dit nummer, met zijn meeslepende stukken, is een lust voor het oor. Het is te horen dat het publiek daar net zo over denkt. De reacties van de fans aan het eind van ‘Elvenpath’ geeft me kippenvel, wat een enorme geestdrift heerst er in Buenos Aires! Het ‘vuurwerk’ gaat verder in ‘I Want My Tears Back’. Natuurlijk is ook samenzang is zeer goed.
CD 2 start met ‘Amaranth’, ook hier word je als luisteraar meegevoerd met de vibe. Bassist Marco Hietala neemt ons hierna mee in een tijdmachine, want met ‘The Carpenter’ gaan we terug naar de beginjaren. Marco heeft hier als eerste de zang, ook hij weet te imponeren met zijn stem’. De aankondiging van ‘Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean’ levert gejuich op. Ook op de tweede cd is er een aaneenschakeling van geweldige en geliefde nummers. ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’ staat tijdens deze tour gebeiteld op de setlist. Dit stukje ear candy hoort gewoon op een cd als deze te staan, hier in gave een versie van ‘slechts’ 17 minuten. ‘Ghost Love Score’ is de toegift, en ook dit is puur genieten van zang, muziek en van de geweldige live beleving.
Dit album brengt de geweldige atmosfeer die er heerste, en de warme band die Nightwish met het publiek had goed over. Het maakt niet uit dat deze nummers al op eerdere cd’s verschenen, fans genieten er nu zeker weer van. ‘Decades: Live In Buenos Aires’ toon dat ‘Nightwish’ de afgelopen bijna 25 jaar fantastische nummers heeft gemaakt. Hopelijk gaan de kijkers van De beste zangers die Nightwish nog niet kenden toch eens luisteren. Wellicht staan ze verbaasd dat symfonische metal best laagdrempelig en pakkend kan zijn. Het wordt de hoogste tijd dat zij, en de luisteraars van Radio 2 ervoor zorgen dat Nightwish in de Top 2000 allertijden komt, is het niet in 2019, dan toch zeker in 2020?!

Nightwish – Decades: Live In Buenos Aires
Just a little longer and the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish celebrates its 25th anniversary. In ‘End Of All Hope‘ the metal comes up and we hear Floor’s greeting to the fans. In the opening track the sound was quite flat, I hoped it would sound better now. But the thunderous metal doesn’t come into its own. Of course it’s difficult at a live concert, but still…
The balance between vocals and music is fine. Because of the exciting effect of ‘Wish I Had An Angel‘, the the volume is crancked up. You feel that this was a tremendous concert. After ‘Come Cover Me‘ Floor makes contact with the fans again, they react very enthusiastic to it. This has an interaction with Nightwish, there is obviously a great atmosphere. Floor has an enormous powerful voice, on top of that her range is impressive, over and over again, even in these old songs. After a few rousing songs it’s time for a little rest: ‘Dead Boy’s Poem‘. The volume is slowly but fantastically built up. This song, with its compelling pieces, is also ear candy. It can be heard that the audience feels the same way. The reactions of the fans at the end of ‘Elvenpath‘ give me goosebumps, what an enormous passion there is in Buenos Aires! The ‘fireworks’ continues in ‘I Want My Tears Back‘. Of course, harmony of singing is also very good.
CD 2 starts with ‘Amaranth‘, also here you will be carried along with the vibe as a listener. Bassist Marco Hietala takes us in a time machine, because with ‘The Carpenter‘ we go back to the early years. Marco is the first to have the vocals here, he also impresses with his voice’. The announcement of ‘Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean‘ is a great success. Also on the second CD there is a succession of great and beloved songs. The Greatest Show On Earth‘ is ‘chiseled’ on the setlist during this tour. This piece of ear candy should just be on a CD like this, here in cool a version of ‘only’ 17 minutes. ‘Ghost Love Score‘ is the encore, and also this is pure enjoyment of vocals, music and the great live experience.
This album reflects the great atmosphere that existed, and the warm band that Nightwish had with the audience. It doesn’t matter that these songs have been released on previous CD’s, fans will certainly enjoy them again. ‘Decades: Live In Buenos Aires‘ show that ‘Nightwish‘ has made fantastic songs over the past (almost) 25 years. Hopefully the viewers of ‘The best singers’ who didn’t know Nightwish yet will listen now. Perhaps they are surprised that symphonic metal can be accessible and catchy. It’s about time they, and the listeners of Radio 2, make sure that Nightwish will be in the ‘all time Top 2000′, isn’t it in 2019, then surely in 2020?!
