Morgan Rider and The Deep Dark River spelen een mix van onder andere (blues)rock, folk, metal en klassiek. ‘Leviathan & The Deep Dark Blue’ vertelt een fantasieverhaal. ‘Beneath The Crushing Tides’ is een vrij rustige instrumentale openingstrack. ‘Dread’ heeft een hele kalme akoestische start, de sfeer is somber. Ineens is er meer volume en komt er een beetje metal bij, de strijkers geven hier een vleugje folk. Het valt niet mee om één te worden met het verhaal. Duidelijk is wel dat er een heel fictief verhaal verteld wordt, waarin wezens sterven in de zee. Toch klinkt het geheel niet dramatisch of theatraal, waardoor het makkelijk weg luistert.
Door een hogere macht ontstaan er in ‘Ignite The Tempests’ vernietigende stormen. Tot ver in het land is er dood en verderf. Het geheel zorgt voor een toegankelijke mix van onder andere heerlijk rockend gitaarspel, verweven met klassieke elementen. Door de cross-overs valt het vast in de smaak bij prog rock liefhebbers.

Langzaam neemt de kracht van de God van de Oceaan af. Inmiddels zijn we aanbeland in ‘The Seafaerers’. Maar rustig en vrolijk wordt het niet. Het verhaal gaat verder met leed. Zelfs als je het verhaal niet volgt, kom je door de pakkende structuur in de flow van zang en muziek.

De start van ‘When The Waves Are Stilled’ is ingetogen. Je voelt dat er dingen gaan gebeuren. Pianospel klinkt samen met de cello, en gesamplede storm. De drums zorgen voor een mooie opbouw. Weer klinken cello en piano samen. Dit wordt afgewisseld met ‘zwaar’ bespeelde snaren. De wisselwerking tussen deze twee stijlen is er een paar keer, steeds op een fantastische manier. Tijdens een pittig stuk zingt Morgan dat de storm verstild is, maar nieuwe stormen zullen komen…niet alleen dat, maar de ondergang zal volgen…. De opbouw naar het einde is fantastisch.

‘Where the Light May Never Reach’ klinkt door het pianospel vredevol. Er is een gave opbouw naar meer power. Deze vrij korte instrumentale track eindigt met pianospel heel rustig. Hiermee eindigt het verhaal.

Tot slot zijn er nog akoestische versies van voorgaande nummers. Hoewel de zang qua volume duidelijker naar voren komt, mis ik echte tekstbeleving in de manier van vertolken. Doordat het geluid net niet sprankelend genoeg is, kruipt de muziek niet onder mijn huid. Toch maakt ‘When The Waves Are Stilled’ op bepaalde stukken weer indruk.

Er zijn heftige dingen in dit verhaal gebeurd, zang en muziek hadden intenser mogen klinken om de verhaallijn duidelijker te maken. De balans tussen de rampspoed in het verhaal, en de uitvoering hiervan is er niet helemaal. Het contrast in emoties is niet groot genoeg, hierdoor beleef je het verhaal niet echt. De nummers hebben een toegankelijke structuur, waardoor delen van melodie je al snel bij blijven. Het album nodigt uit om het volume verder open te draaien.

In ‘Ignite The Tempests‘ a divine being creates destructive storms. Death and destruction extend far into the country. The whole provides an accessible mix of wonderfully rocking guitar playing, interwoven with classical elements. Because of the cross-overs, it’s sure to appeal to prog rock lovers.

Slowly the power of the God of the Ocean decreases. In the meantime, we have arrived in ‘The Seafaerers‘. But it doesn’t get quiet and cheerful. The story continues with suffering. Even if you don’t understand the story, you get through the catchy structure in the flow of vocals and music.

The start of ‘When The Waves Are Stilled‘ is subdued. You feel that things are going to happen. Piano playing sounds together with the cello, and sampled storm. The drums provide a nice structure. Again, cello and piano sound together. This is alternated with ‘heavily’ played guitar. The interaction between these two styles is there a few times, always in a fantastic way. During a spicy piece Morgan sings that the storm is still, but new storms will come…not only that, but the doom will come….The build-up to the end is fantastic.

‘Where the Light May Never Reach‘ sounds peaceful because of the piano playing. There is a cool build-up to more power. This rather short instrumental track ends very quietly with piano playing. With this the story ends.

At the end there are acoustic versions of earlier songs. Although the vocals are more obvious in terms of volume, I miss real text interpretation in the way of performing. Since the sound is just not sparkling enough, the music does not get under my skin. Yet ‘When The Waves Are Stilled‘ makes an impression on certain parts.

In this story there have been fierce moments, vocals and music could have sounded more intense to make the storyline clearer. The balance between the disaster in the story, and its interpretation is not entirely there. The contrast in emotions is not big enough, so you don’t really experience the story.
