Light – Light

De bas is in ‘A Blessing/A Curse’ goed hoorbaar.

Vooral in een instrumentaal stuk van ‘Between What Is And What May’ vallen weer de toetsen positief op.

Light – Light

Argentinean singer/guitarist Claudio Delgift regularly works with other musicians from ‘all over’ the world. This is of course possible in the digital age.
He is also the frontman of the rock band Light. Earlier this year this quartet released their eponymous debut album.

The Deepest Roots‘ has a spherical start, much calmer than you would expect from a rock band. Of course, there will be more tempo and volume, it won’t be any heavier than light rock, but that’s not necessary. Most twists and turns gradually merge into one another, but there are also unexpected changes, including a special musical rest. On top of that a lot of details have been added in this instrumental track. The repetitions in the rhythm sometimes take away too much attention from the guitar playing. The keys and the strings mix well, although the balance is under pressure just before the end.

The bass is clearly audible in ‘A Blessing/A Curse‘. The sound of the total is a bit too flat. As a result, the whole thing does not come to life, while the structure itself is not too bad, not at all. Claudio Delgift has no raw rock voice. The colour of his remarkable voice is a bit softer and a bit nasal. He may not convince everyone here with his vocals. The stacked voices sound fine, and there’s a nice play with the division in the headphones. The build-up to the end is good.

Bonds‘ has a rather quiet, dreamy start, which turns into a nice piece of rock. The keys are pleasantly present. When Claudio starts to sing, the music is slightly softer, so that vocals and music are in balance. The sound of church organ is surprising, but it is a bit too short to impress. In the rocking piece the drums are quite basic. Yet we also hear some dynamics in the drumming. Moreover, Francisco Carpintero regularly plays the cymbals lightly and quickly.

Especially in an instrumental piece by ‘Between What Is And What May‘ the keys are again positive. The piano sounds are sparkling, the strings are played lightly rocking. The piano playing changes to the electric sound of the keys, and melts the guitar playing together. This is perfectly complemented by the rhythm section. Tempo and volume are pushed up for a while. The moment you would expect even faster, tempo and volume drop again. Well chosen, because that’s how the few sentences Claudio sings are in balance with the music. The rhythm of the instrumental piece is quite quiet, but catchy. There is a build-up to the end of the song. This track goes out sooner than expected after the extensive build-up.

In the last part of ‘In Your Dept‘ there is another nice thing: When the track seems to end, Ian Beabout plays a short piece of high, quiet flute playing. He is supported with a touch of music. The end is a bit too abrupt.

The bass on this CD is more than just ‘just’ part of the rhythm section, yet the bass grooves are not very strong/heavy. That wouldn’t fit in the light rocking music either. Claudio’s voice is recognizable by its characteristic color, but perhaps not everyone is a lover of his friendly sounding voice. Although his voice is quite soft, it is usually in harmony with the light rocking music. Usually the drums are fairly basic, so guitar and keys have plenty of room to play all sorts of things. That could have been a bit more intense, also in terms of sound quality. Yet it is a fairly good debut album with nine fairly well composed tracks.
