Joost de Lange is midden dertig en speelt vanaf zijn elfde gitaar, hij werd toen beïnvloed door bijvoorbeeld Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix en Dire Straits. Een jaar of zeven later kwam daar hardrock en (prog)metal bij van Metallica, Dream Theater e.v.a.
Een aantal jaar geleden richtte hij zijn eigen band, de Joost de Lange Band, op. Er zijn enkele bandwissels geweest, maar sinds 2015 is de bandsamenstelling niet meer gewijzigd. Dit drietal gebruikt invloeden uit onder andere blues, rock en grunge, stevige gitaarmuziek wordt natuurlijk niet uit de weg gegaan.
‘Drifting away’ heeft een kort instrumentaal, rockend intro. Dan komt de zang van Joost erbij met zijn licht ruw randje op de stem. Als vanzelf beweeg ik mee in het ritme van de muziek. Ook het iets langzamere stuk heeft een aangename flow. Het gitaarwerk is natuurlijk heerlijk. Dit wordt prima aangevuld door bassist Mitchell Goor en drummer Ramses Donvil. Het iets groezelige geluid past bij de muziek.
‘Wandering’ is een bekende. Dit nummer is al te horen op ‘Live in Antwerp’ (2017). Deze tekst nodigt helemaal uit om mee te zingen. Het gitaarspel is vooral in het instrumentale gedeelte tof! In zachter gespeeld stuk komt de stem van Joost extra mooi uit. Aan het strak gespeelde eind wordt nog een klein stukje vast geplakt.
Ook ‘The river’ kennen we van ‘Live in Antwerp’. Dit mid tempo nummer heeft een fijne flow. Het is gevoelig gezongen en gespeeld, je voelt bijna zijn eenzaamheid. De emotie wordt niet alleen in het vocale deel overgebracht, maar ook in het instrumentale deel. De opbouw naar meer volume en tempo, en weer terug naar beneden is prima. Na ruim 6,30 minuut eindigt dit nummer op een mooie, gevoelige manier.
De muziek is allemaal door Joost geschreven, maar Mitchell en Ramses krijgen alle ruimte om hun instrumenten naar voren te duwen. Of juist wat meer op de achtergrond te blijven. Bas en drum zijn veel meer dan ‘alleen maar’ ritmesectie, dit geeft de goed opgebouwde nummers absoluut een meerwaarde.
In ‘Lonesome wolf’ zijn de snaren wat zwaarder van klank, het ritme is opzwepend. De muziek en zang passen bij een ‘kilometervreter’. Niet alleen leuk ‘on the road’ maar ook thuis op de bank is het puur genieten. Het decrescendo is onverwacht, na deze daling in tempo en volume had het tempo nòg wat lager mogen zijn. Dat had de impact vergroot. Tempo en volume worden weer opgevoerd, dat blijft even zo, waarna de titeltrack mooi eindigt.
Het ritme in ‘Rock & roll radio’ is wat ‘recht toe recht aan’, maar dat is natuurlijk geen probleem. “Rock ‘n’ roll” wordt subtiel als backing vocal meegezongen, maar vormt een prima aanvulling. Joost laat zijn gitaar flink rocken. Later zingt hij korte stukjes solo, ook dat kan hij makkelijk aan.
Zoals eerder gezegd, krijgen Mitchell en Ramses alle ruimte. Dat komt het geheel ten goede, want Mitchell laat gave (funky) grooves horen. Bij Ramses hoor je een jazz achtergrond in zijn fijngevoelige, dynamische manier van drummen, waarbij hij goed gebruik maakt van zijn cimbalen. Natuurlijk hoor je volop fantastisch gitaarwerk van Joost. Er is een uitstekende balans tussen vocale en instrumentale stukken. Deze elf (classic) rocknummers zijn goed opgebouwd en zeer geschikt om live te spelen. De teksten zijn over het algemeen redelijk eenvoudig, waardoor je vrij snel mee kan zingen. Joost zingt de woorden geloofwaardig, bovendien heeft hij een aangename stemkleur. ‘Lonesome wolf’ is een prima album, waarvan de nummers aangenaam in je hoofd blijven kleven.

Wandering‘ is a familiar one. This song can already be heard on ‘Live in Antwerp‘ (2017). This lyrics invites you to sing along. The guitar playing is especially great in the instrumental part! In a softer piece, Joost’s voice comes out extra nice. At the tightly played end a small piece is stuck to it.
We also know ‘The river‘ from ‘Live in Antwerp‘. This mid tempo song has a fine flow. It is sung and played sensitively, you almost feel its loneliness. The emotion is not only transmitted in the vocal part, but also in the instrumental part. The build-up to more volume and tempo, and back down again is fine. After more than 6.30 minutes this song ends in a beautiful, sensitive way.
The music is all written by Joost, but Mitchell and Ramses get all the space they need to push their instruments forward. Or just a little more in the background to stay. Bass and drum are much more than ‘just’ rhythm section, this gives the well built songs an added value.
In ‘Lonesome wolf‘ the strings are heavier in sound, the rhythm is exciting. The music and vocals fit with a ‘kilometre-eater’. Not only fun on the road but also at home on the couch is pure enjoyment. The decrescendo is unexpected, after this decrease in tempo and volume the tempo should have been even lower. That had increased the impact. Pace and volume are increased again, that remains the case for a while, after which the title track ends nicely.
The rhythm in ‘Rock & roll radio‘ is a bit ‘straightforward’, but of course that is no problem. “Rock ‘n’ roll” is subtly sung along as a backing vocal, but is a fine addition. Joost lets his guitar rock a lot. Later he sings short solo pieces, he can easily handle that too.
As said before, Mitchell and Ramses get all the space they need. That benefits the whole thing, because Mitchell plays cool (funky) grooves. With Ramses you can hear a jazz background in his sensitive, dynamic way of drumming, where he makes good use of his cymbals. Of course you can hear a lot of fantastic guitar skills from Joost. There is an excellent balance between vocal and instrumental pieces. These eleven (classic) rock songs are well built and very suitable to play live. The lyrics are generally quite simple, so you can sing along quite quickly. Joost sings the words credibly, moreover he has a pleasant voice color. Lonesome wolf‘ is a fine album, the songs of which stick pleasantly in your head.
