Frenk de Groot is de man achter Frenk & the Lean Machine. In 2017 Bracht hij onder zijn eigen naam de EP ‘Ready, Set Go!’ uit. Voor deze EP zong hij alles en speelde hij de gitaar-en baspartijen in. Daarnaast gebruikte hij een drumcomputer. Frenk richtte een band op om live te kunnen spelen. Op 24 juni bracht Frenk & the Lean Machine hun debuutalbum ‘Earworm Attack’ uit. Hier doen ook een aantal gastmuzikanten aan mee.

‘Plastic Soup’ heeft een pakkend intro. De rauwe zang van Frenk is wat minder krachtig dan je zou verwachten bij de rock. Het serieuze onderwerp wordt met vrolijkheid gebracht. Frenk’s uitspraak is vrij duidelijk zodat je al snel met de tekst kan meezingen. De opbouw van het nummer is eenvoudig. Het geluid is, zeker voor (hard) rock aan de fletse kant. Hoewel de ruige energie hierdoor niet volledig tot uiting komt, is dit openingsnummer wel opzwepend.

Ook de tweede track is onvervalste no nonsens rock. Het heerlijke pianospel van gastmuzikant Fred Plazier zorgt voor een extra lekker old school gehalte.
Frenk heeft geen groot vocaal bereik. Ook qua volume is er niet heel veel variatie, maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. De tekst van dit nummer is eigenlijk onzin, maar leuk is het zeker!

Het eerste stuk van ‘Sing Along Song’ is in mid-tempo, later ligt het tempo iets hoger. Het geluid van de cimbalen is te blikkerig, het geluid van de drums zelf is beter. Bovendien hoor je in een langzamer stukje de toonhoogte verschillen tussen de onderlinge drums.

Alle nummers zijn vrij eenvoudig van structuur. Sommige teksten zijn voorspelbaar, dat maakt het meezingen alleen maar gemakkelijker. Deze pure rock is niet heel verrassend, maar wel pakkend! Live gespeeld zal alles vast nog beter tot zijn recht komen.

Een aantal nummers zijn ‘oudjes’ van de debuut EP. ‘Ready Set Go!’ was daarvan de titeltrack. Deze past ook in het rijtje ‘earworms’, en sluit daarom goed aan bij de overige nummers op deze cd.

Tot slot ‘Earworm Attack, Brass-Mix‘, dit is een bonus-track. Het geluid van een ‘blazerssectie’ zorgt voor een heus brass gevoel. Het is niet vernieuwend, maar wel verrassend. En het geeft zeker wat extra’s.

Je hoort nu echte drums, in plaats van een drumcomputer dat is een hele verbetering ten opzichte van zijn EP. Toch is de stap voorwaarts minder groot dan gehoopt. Wat de geluidskwaliteit van deze opzwepende nummers is niet super. De rock heeft her en der een vleugje punk en zal vast bij jong en oud in de smaak zal vallen. ‘Earworm Attack’ is een goed gekozen albumtitel, want als je een track eenmaal in je hoofd hebt zitten, raak je die niet zomaar kwijt.

Frenk & the Lean Machine – Earworm Attack

Frenk de Groot is the man behind Frenk & the Lean Machine. In 2017 he released the EP ‘Ready, Set Go!‘ under his own name. For this EP he sang everything and played the guitar and bass parts. He also used a drum computer. Frenk founded a band to play live. On June 24th Frenk & the Lean Machine released their debut album ‘Earworm Attack‘. A number of guest musicians also participated.

‘Plastic Soup‘ has a catchy intro. Frenk’s raw voice is a bit less powerful than you would expect to hear in the rock. The serious subject is brought with joy. Frenk’s pronunciation is quite clear so you can sing along with the lyrics soon. The construction of the song is simple. The sound is, especially for (hard) rock on the dull side. Although the rough energy is not fully expressed by this, this opening track is exciting.

Also the second track is pure no nonsense rock. The wonderful piano playing of guest musician Fred Plazier provides an extra delicious old school touch.
Frenk has no great vocal range. Also, in terms of volume there is not much variation, but that shouldn’t spoil the fun. The lyrics of this song are actually nonsense, but it’s definitely fun!

The first piece of ‘Sing Along Song‘ is in mid-tempo, later the tempo is a bit faster. The sound of the cymbals is too tinny, the sound of the drums themselves is better. Moreover, in a slower piece you can hear the tone differences between the drums.

All songs are quite simple in structure. Some lyrics are predictable, that only makes singing along easier. This pure rock is not very surprising, but catchy! Played live, I’m sure everything will come out even better.

Some of the songs are ‘oldies’ of the debut EP. ‘Ready Set Go!‘ was the title track. This one also fits in the list of ‘earworms‘, and therefore it fits well with the other songs on this CD.

Finally, ‘Earworm Attack, Brass-Mix‘, this is a bonus track. The sound of a ‘horn section’ creates a real brass feeling. It is not innovative, but surprising. And it certainly gives something extra.

You hear real drums now, instead of a drum computer that’s quite an improvement compared to his EP. Still, the step forward is not as big as I hoped. What the sound quality of these exhilarating songs is not super. The rock has a hint of punk here and there and it will surely appeal to young and old. ‘Earworm Attack‘ is a well-chosen album title, because once you have a track in your head, you don’t get rid of it easily.
