Excalion is een melodic metal band uit Finland. Hun vijfde album heet ‘Emotions’, de teksten gaan over haat en vertrouwen, zorgen en genieten. De metal is krachtig en soms agressief, de refreinen zijn aanstekelijk, de melodie is altijd belangrijk. Dit album wordt als volgt aangeprezen: “Excalion bundelde opnieuw zijn krachten met Scarlet Records om u het meest epische Melodic Metal album van het jaar te brengen!” Dat klinkt veelbelovend.
‘Trust’ heeft een mysterieuze start, de opbouw naar metal had spannender gemogen. De melodie is meteen aangenaam, het is ritme opzwepend. De bas grooves (door Onni Hirvonen) zijn vet aangezet, de contrasterende hoge tonen banen zich hier een weg doorheen. De stem van Marcus Lång past bij het genre. De gestapelde stemmen vallen mooi samen met een opzwepend stuk. De wendingen vloeien min of meer geleidelijk in elkaar over. De drumvellen zijn vrij strak gespannen. Deels past het binnen de strak gespeelde stukken. Maar de dynamiek is wat minder aanwezig. Er zijn best heel wat laagjes in de muziek. Het contrast tussen de orkestrale arrangementen en de metal is te klein, nu komen de klassieke elementen een beetje in de verdrukking. Op het einde komen de symfonische elementen wel even wat meer naar voren, de klank hiervan is vrij kil.
‘Sunshine Path’ heeft wat lichts in zich. Aleksi Hirvonen laat zowel heerlijk zwaar als gaaf gillend gitaarspel horen. Tussen dit ‘geweld’ klinken op de achtergrond hoge, snelle symfonische elementen. De wending waarin de drums zich even stilhouden komt onverwacht, heel even zijn de lichte hoge tonen van de symfonie wat beter te horen. De achtergrondzang is subtiel toegevoegd. Marcus laat een gave vocale uithaal horen, en Henri Pirkkalainen drumt een klein stukje met lekkere dynamiek, dit had wel langer mogen duren.
De verhouding tussen symfonie en metal in ‘Solitude’ is goed. Ook in het zachter gezongen deel komt Marcus’ stem prima tot uiting. Schijnbaar moeiteloos schakelt hij over op powervolle zang. Als de volumeverschillen tussen dit alles groter was geweest, had dit nummer veel intenser geklonken. De diepgang die in dit nummer zit, komt niet genoeg tot leven.
‘I Left My Heart At Home’ heeft een kalme start met pianoklanken door Jarmo Myllyvirtae. De details op de cimbalen zijn prima gespeeld, deze track blijft nog even klein. Langzaam worden tempo en volume verhoogd. Het vioolspel van Saara Jokiaho komt hier (net als in Nightmariner’) niet goed naar voren. Vooral hier mis ik de contrasten tussen de klein en lichte muziek en de diepe donkere sound van de zwaarder gespeelde delen. Daardoor krijgt dit nummer niet de intensiteit die het verdient.
De rockende start van ‘The Mercy Racers’ is te zacht in vergelijking met vorige nummer, dit geeft disbalans. De opbouw is vrij voorspelbaar, maar wel aanstekelijk.
In ‘Callsigns’ komt het geluid van strijkinstrumenten beter naar voren. De wending naar de metal verloopt wat merkwaardig. De wending van metal terug naar rustiger deel is super. Het kleine ruwe randje op de stem geeft extra diepgang. Het volume van de instrumenten wordt langzaam weggedraaid. Tijdens deze fade out blijft de viool wel hoorbaar, daarbij is er even wat sampling te horen.
De bonustrack ‘Deep Water’ start vol gas, en dat blijft grotendeels zo.
De eerste minuut van het album klinkt inderdaad veel belovend. Maar de opbouw en een aantal wendingen zijn niet verrassend genoeg. De laagjes en de contrasten die in de muziek zitten, komen niet altijd volledig tot zijn recht. De verschillende emoties en de diepgang van de nummers, komen niet volledig tot uiting. Excalion heeft van ‘Emotions’ wel een opzwepend en toegankelijk album gemaakt.

Trust‘ has a mysterious start, the build-up to metal could have been more exciting. The melody is immediately pleasant, it’s rhythm exciting. The bass grooves (by Onni Hirvonen) are cool, the contrasting high notes make their way through this. Marcus Lång’s voice fits the genre. The stacked voices coincide nicely with a uplifting piece. The twists and turns flow more or less gradually into one another. The drumheads are quite tight. Partly it fits within the tightly played pieces. But the dynamics are less present. There are quite a few layers in the music. The contrast between the orchestral arrangements and the metal is too small, now the classical elements are a bit oppressed. At the end the symphonic elements come forward a bit more, the sound of this is quite ‘bleak’.
‘Sunshine Path‘ has some light in it. Aleksi Hirvonen shows both wonderfully heavy and cool screaming guitar playing. In between this ‘violence’, high and fast symphonic elements can be heard in the background. The turn in which the drums stop for a while comes unexpectedly, just for a moment the light high notes of the symphony can be heard a bit better. The background vocals are subtly added. Marcus plays a great vocal outburst, and Henri Pirkkalainen drums a with nice dynamics, this could have taken longer.
The relationship between symphony and metal in ‘Solitude‘ is good. Also in the softer sung part Marcus’ voice is well expressed.
Apparently effortless he switches to powervolle vocals. If the difference in volume between all this had been greater, this song would have sounded much more intense. The depth in this song, does not come to life enough.
‘I Left My Heart At Home‘ has a calm start with piano sounds by Jarmo Myllyvirta. The details on the cymbals are well played, this track is still small. Slowly the tempo and volume are increased. The violin playing of Saara Jokiaho does not come to the fore here (just like in ‘Nightmariner‘). Especially here I miss the contrasts between the small and light music and the deep dark sound of the more heavily played parts. That’s why this song doesn’t have the intensity it deserves.
The rocking start of ‘The Mercy Racers‘ is too soft compared to the previous song, this gives an imbalance. The build-up is quite predictable, but contagious.
In ‘Callsigns‘ the sound of string instruments comes out better. The turn to the metal is a bit strange. The turn from metal back to quieter part is super. The small roughness on the voice gives extra depth. The volume of the instruments is slowly turned away. During this fade out the violin remains audible, with some sampling to be heard.
The bonustrack ‘Deep Water’ starts fullspeed, and remains so for the most part.
The first minute of the album indeed sounds very promising. But the structure and some twists and turns are not surprising enough. The layers and contrasts in the music don’t always come into their own. The different emotions and the depth of the songs, are not fully expressed. Excalion has made ‘Emotions‘ a catching and accessible album.
