Dreamwalkers Inc is een nieuwe bandnaam. Oprichter Tom de Wit startte dit project ooit onder de naam TDW. Dit bleek online niet goed vindbaar, daarom werd het TDW & Dreamwalkers Inc. Inmiddels is deze naam veranderd in Dreamwalkers Inc.
‘First Re-Draft’ is het eerste album dat onder deze nieuwe naam uitkomt. De basis van dit album gaat terug naar 2004. In dat jaar kwam het allereerste album van TDW uit, met de titel ‘First Draft’. De toen 16-jarige Tom was onervaren in het hele productieproces. Dat hoorde hij zelf later ook, toch liet de basis hem niet los. In 2011 bracht hij de nummers opnieuw uit, exclusief voor de leden van de TDW-website. Achteraf was Tom nog niet tevreden, nu met de input van de band, zijn de nummers in een nieuw jasje gestoken.
‘Endless’ heeft een rustige start met gesproken woorden. De symfonische rock bevat metal elementen. De eerste zinnen die Tom zingt, zijn vervormd en klinken grimmig.
In een ingetogen stuk is de zang mooi van kleur. Deze heldere zang en de vervormde zang wisselen elkaar af. Bovendien is er een variatie in het aantal stemmen, er doet een heel koor mee. Het ‘drumwerk’ klinkt een beetje hol, maar de kleur is warm genoeg. Bovendien is er ‘dynamiek’. Er is een geluid gebruikt dat lijkt op een speeldoosje, hierna is er onrust. Deze wordt deels veroorzaakt doordat er tegen elkaar in wordt gezongen. Hierdoor zijn de woorden niet makkelijk te verstaan, maar je kan meelezen in het tekstboekje. Gesamplede stemmen vormen de inleiding voor een bijzonder einde.
Het ‘speeldoosje’ komt in diverse nummers terug. De toevoegde gesproken woorden klinken steeds anders. Tijdens de kalme start van ‘Innerburn’ is het ‘speeldoosje’ aanwezig en is er weer gebruik gemaakt van gesproken sampling. Tijdens een uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk vliegt het tempo omhoog. “Help me!” zijn de eerste woorden die gezongen worden.
Deze luistertekst wordt deels door Tom en deels door het koor gezongen, dit geeft fantastische wisselwerking. Gesproken woorden, het ‘speeldoosje’ en het geluid van een sobere strijkers zorgen voor een prachtig eind.
Liepen de nummers hiervoor bijna non stop in elkaar over, voor ‘Dreamwalk’ is er een korte stilte. De teksten zing je niet zomaar even mee. ‘Dreamwalk’ de meest toegankelijk tekst, deze is door het koor gezongen. De ‘drums’ klinken behoorlijk strak, tevens is er ‘dynamiek’ te horen. De overige instrumenten gaan even mee in dit strakke ritme. Al gaan ‘strijkers’ hun eigen weg. Na de woorden ‘Let it go now’ sterft het einde mooi weg.
‘Your Room’ heeft niet alleen een boeiend begin, maar ook een prachtig einde. Dit loopt mooi over naar ‘My Loss’. Ook in dit laatste nummer weet ‘Dreamwalkers Inc’ mijn aandacht vast te houden. De opbouw naar het einde toe is fantastisch.
Dreamwalkers Inc heeft duidelijk een eigen stijl ontwikkeld. Je hoort overeenkomsten met onder andere hun vorige album ‘The Antithetic Affiliation’ (2017). Maar ook verschillen: op het nieuwe album is meer onrust voelbaar, het album moet langer groeien. Het tekstboekje, met artwork van Maarten Gunsing, bevat sprekende tekeningen in schetsvorm. Deze sluiten aan bij de nummers.
Met vlagen is er een groot aantal laagjes in zang en muziek. De balans is er niet alleen tussen zang en muziek, maar ook tussen de symfo en de metal. Tom heeft een veelzijdige stem, die zowel vriendelijk en helder kan klinken, als grimmig en/of boos. Door de emotie in de woorden van Tom, de koorzang en door de structuur van de nummers, voelt ‘First Re-Draft’ bijna aan als een rockopera.

The ‘drums’ sound a bit hollow, but the colour is warm enough. Moreover, there is ‘dynamics’. A sound is used that resembles a music box, after this there is restlessness. This is partly caused by singing against each other. Because of this the words are not easy to understand, but you can read along in the textbooklet. Sampled voices are the introduction to a special ending.
The ‘music box’ is used in several songs. The added spoken words always sound different. During the calm start of ‘Innerburn‘ the ‘music box’ is present and again spoken sampling is used. During an extensive instrumental piece the tempo flies up. “Help me” are the first words that are sung.
This lyrics is sung partly by Tom and partly by the choir, this gives fantastic interaction. Spoken words, the ‘music box’ and the sound of a sober strings provide a beautiful ending.
While the songs were almost non-stop, for ‘Dreamwalk‘ there is a short silence. You don’t sing along with the lyrics just like that. Dreamwalk‘ is the most accessible text, this one is sung by the choir. The ‘drums’ sound quite tight, there is also ‘dynamics’ to be heard. The other instruments go along with this tight rhythm for a while. Although ‘strings’ go their own way. After the words ‘Let it go now‘ the end dies away nicely.
Your Room‘ not only has a fascinating beginning, but also a beautiful ending. This runs nicely over to ‘My Loss’. Also in this last song ‘Dreamwalkers Inc‘ manages to hold my attention. The construction towards the end is fantastic.
Dreamwalkers Inc has clearly developed its own style. You can hear similarities with their previous album ‘The Antithetic Affiliation‘ (2017). But also differences: on the new album there is more unrest, the album has to grow longer. The textbooklet, with artwork by Maarten Gunsing, contains striking drawings in sketch form. These are in line with the songs.
At times there is a large number of layers in vocals and music. The balance is not only between vocals and music, but also between symphony and metal. Tom has a versatile voice, which can sound both friendly and clear, as grim and/or angry. Because of the emotion in Tom’s words, the choral singing and the structure of the songs, ‘First Re-Draft‘ almost feels like a rock opera.
