Doug Woods and Colin Powell have so much inspiration that they usually release two (digital) albums a year. Doug is well known in the world of iOS music. Musician/composer and producer Colin (alias Multitude of One and Alter Ego UK) and Doug have been working together for several years.
Their albums often have a storyline, and otherwise a theme. The title ‘Cinematica‘ betrays what this album is based on. This is combined with nostalgic elements from the 80’s, and of course prog. iOS music is, as always, combined with real instruments.

‘A Life in a Day‘ starts with quiet piano sounds in which nice details are interwoven. The sound resembling string instruments is nicely interwoven. After a hit on a cymbal, tempo and volume are slightly increased. Various sounds are mixed with the music. After another quiet piece, you hear the sound of a few ‘wind instruments’. This opening track ends nicely small. All kinds of strange sounds create a captivating start of ‘Following Shadows‘. The rhythmic part after this has a cheerful sound, but the high tones sound quite sharp. There are several twists and turns. Some parts are wonderfully mysterious, but also the 80’s can be heard. At a certain point the music has common ground with Eastern atmospheres. With gusts of time a number of repetitions have been played, yet the whole remains captivating. Because of the acoustic guitar playing and percussion in ‘The Forest of Forgotten Sorrows’, you could just imagine yourself in a jungle. The atmosphere is mysterious yet relaxed. It dies away extremely slowly.

Doug and Colin seem to use soundscapes. This is the art of creating atmospheric images with music and all kinds of (strange) sounds. With this they give the listener the opportunity to visualize. In this way, the two of them take you on a journey, as it were. You can dream away with this album, without it being ‘relaxation music’. The Terror is Coming‘ starts more quietly than expected, but the tempo and volume increase subtly. This creates an arc of tension when a sound explosion occurs. The expected climax does not come, so this ‘story’ seems to have an open ending. ‘Shifting the Balance‘ has a soft, mysterious start. The sound runs nicely back and forth in the headphones. Quiet music and special sounds alternate with pieces of classical music. Even though there is quite a lot to listen to, the whole brings you into a wonderfully calm flow. In this way the songs flow into each other. If you hear the ’80s atmosphere somewhere, then it is in ‘Years Ahead’. The tempo is a bit higher here, there is even ‘singing’ in ‘Years Ahead‘. Again, various changes and details have been incorporated. Finally, ‘Horizons of Tomorrow‘ this is a lovely quiet track.

If the sound had been fuller, ‘Events from Time‘ in particular would have had cinematic allure. So, the music doesn’t sound as impressive as you’d expect with movies, yet I listened with pleasure. The (sounds of) different musical instruments and all kinds of sounds, whether or not made with iOS, complement each other perfectly. Fairly said, you have to be in the mood for an album that is a bit quieter and has such a special structure. ‘Cinematics‘ needs to grow for a while, because you keep hearing new things. Because of the many details and the sometimes-eccentric sounds and music, ‘Cinematica‘ comes into its own when you listen with a headset.

Doug Woods and Colin Powell – Cinematica

Doug Woods en Colin Powell hebben zo veel inspiratie dat ze meestal twee (digitale) albums per jaar uitbrengen. Doug is een bekende in de wereld van iOS muziek. Muzikant/componist en producer Colin (alias Multitude of One and Alter Ego UK) en Doug werken al diverse jaren samen.
Hun albums hebben vaak een verhaallijn, en anders een thema. De titel ‘Cinematica’ verraadt waar dit album op gebaseerd is. Dit wordt gecombineerd met nostalgische elementen uit jaren ’80, en natuurlijk prog. iOS muziek wordt, net zoals altijd, gecombineerd met echte instrumenten.

‘A Life in a Day’ start met rustige pianoklanken waar leuke details in verweven zitten. Het geluid wat lijkt op strijkinstrumenten wordt er leuk doorheen verweven. Na een slag op een cimbaal worden tempo en volume wat opgeschroefd. Er worden diverse geluidjes vermengd met de muziek. Na weer een rustig stuk hoor je het geluid van een paar ‘blaasinstrumenten’. Deze openingstrack eindigt mooi klein. Allerlei vreemde geluiden zorgen voor een boeiende start van ‘Following Shadows’. Het ritmische gedeelte hierna heeft een vrolijke klank, maar de hoge tonen klinken vrij scherp. Er zijn verschillende ‘twists and turns’. Sommige delen zijn heerlijk mysterieus, maar ook de jaren ’80 zijn hierin terug te horen. Op een gegeven moment heeft de muziek raakvlakken met Oosterse sferen. Met vlagen zijn er een aantal herhalingen gespeeld, toch blijft het geheel boeien. Door het akoestisch gitaarspel en de percussie in ‘The Forest of Forgotten Sorrows’, zou je je zomaar in een oerwoud kunnen wanen. De sfeer is geheimzinnig maar toch relaxed. Dit sterft uiterst langzaam weg.

Doug en Colin lijken soundscapes te gebruiken. Dit is de kunst om met muziek en allerlei (merkwaardige) geluiden sfeerbeelden te creëren. Waarmee ze de luisteraar de kans geven om te visualiseren. Zo neemt dit tweetal je als het ware mee op reis. Je kunt heerlijk wegdromen met dit album, zonder dat het ‘ontspanningsmuziek’ is. ‘The Terror is Coming’ start rustiger dan verwacht, wel nemen tempo en volume subtiel toe. Hierdoor ontstaat er een spanningsboog wanneer er een geluidsexplosie komt. De verwachte climax komt niet, waardoor dit ‘verhaal’ een open eind lijkt te hebben. ‘Shifting the Balance’ heeft een zachte, geheimzinnige start. Het geluid loopt mooi heen en weer in de koptelefoon. Rustige muziek en bijzondere geluiden worden afgewisseld met stukjes klassieke muziek. Ondanks dat er best veel is om naar te luisteren, brengt het geheel je in een heerlijke rustige flow. Zo vloeien de nummers in elkaar over. Als je ergens de jaren ’80 sfeer in terug hoort, dan is het wel in ‘Years Ahead’. Het tempo ligt hier ietsjes hoger, er wordt zelfs in ‘gezongen’. Weer zijn er diverse veranderingen en details in verwerkt. Tot slot ‘Horizons of Tomorrow’ dit is een heerlijke rustige track.

Als het geluid van voller was geweest, dan zou met name ‘Events from Time’ filmische allure hebben gehad. De muziek klinkt dus niet zo imposant zoals je bij films zou verwachten, toch heb ik met plezier geluisterd. De (klanken van) verschillende muziekinstrumenten en allerlei geluiden, al of niet met iOS gemaakt, vullen elkaar prima aan. Eerlijk is eerlijk, je moet wel zin hebben in en wat rustiger album dat zo bijzonder is opgebouwd is. ‘Cinematica’ moet even groeien, want steeds hoor je weer nieuwe dingen. Door de vele details en de soms excentrieke geluiden en muziek, komt ‘Cinematica’ het beste tot zijn recht als je luistert met een headset.
