Musical liefhebbers kennen Damian Wilson van de rol van Jean Valjean uit de Engelse versie van Les Misérables. Met ‘Thank You’ keert Damian terug naar ‘Just The Way It Goes’, want ruim twee decennia geleden nam hij dat klassiek georiënteerde album samen met Andrew op.

De EP gaat van start met de titeltrack. Dit nummer schreef Damian over de fijnste jaren van zijn leven aan boord van zijn meest favoriete boot ‘Mistral’. Kort daarna was hij met ‘Mistral’ onderweg naar ‘Cropredy festival’, toen ‘Mistral zonk. Het was de derde boot van hem die zonk. Na het heldere pianospel, raakt de stem van Damian me al tijdens de eerste woorden die hij zingt. De strijkers smelten op de achtergrond samen met piano en zang. Alles is prachtig verdeeld over de koptelefoon. De geluidkwaliteit is ook zeer goed. Damian zingt helder en breekbaar, dit nummer blijft klein en ingetogen.

‘Let Me Down Slowly’ gaat over de worsteling die Damian had nadat een relatie eindigde. Sommige woorden zijn heel klein gezongen, andere met iets meer volume. Dit draagt bij aan de emotionele lading in zijn zang, ieder woord is raak. De enkele noten die Andrew op zijn piano speelt, zijn langzaam en intens. De strijkers geven met hun sombere klank extra diepgang. De stem van de sopraan is zonder woorden, maar juist dit zegt zo veel, het geeft me kippenvel.
Damian laat enkele pauzes vallen in zijn zang, dit onderstreept de pijn die hij voelt. Vooral de laatste regel is uiterst breekbaar gezongen, wow.

‘God Be My Judge’ verscheen eerder op ‘Weir Keeper’s Tale’, een album dat hij samen met Adam Wakeman maakte in 2016. Maar nu hoor je een versie met piano en strijkers. Beide versies zijn klein gespeeld en gezongen, maar ze zijn wel degelijk anders.

Hoewel ‘Until I’m With You’ over het verlies en verlangen van een vriendin gaat, kan men dit vertalen naar de eigen situatie.

Nick Woodbridge, een goede van vriend van Damian schreef ooit het nummer ‘Can you hear me’. Jaren geleden vertelde Nick dat hij tijd voor zichzelf nodig had en verdween. ‘Thank You’ zal door progrock/metal liefhebbers gewaardeerd worden, want zij houden van Damian’s veelzijdige stem. Maar deze EP valt ook vast in de smaak bij liefhebbers van klassieke en/of ingetogen muziek. Dit album is geschikt voor een grotere doelgroep, maar is allesbehalve commercieel van opzet. ‘Thank You’ is puur en intens, klein van opzet, maar fantastisch uitgevoerd.
