Crestfallen Queen – Queen of Swords

Crestfallen Queen – Queen of Swords

Crestfallen Queen was founded in Germany about three years ago. Their inspiration comes from the seventies. They add metal rhythms and synthesizers, thus creating a mix of progressive doom rock. The band members prefer to keep their own name ‘secret’, which is why they only use one letter as a pseudonym.

Umbra‘ has a special, but beautiful start. The music is mysterious and the strange sounds in the background make it sound almost creepy. There is no build up to more, this instrumental opening track goes out. The quiet beginning of ‘Queen of Swords‘ is by the acoustic music is completely different from the previous song. There is a nice build-up to heavier sounds. The tempo is increased to a rousing rhythm. Then E. starts singing with her pleasant, rough voice. She sings fast, but is quite understandable. She also plays some grunts in an impressive way. Singing and music constantly form a unity. This wonderful instrumental piece has a number of repeats, as well as a number of twists and turns. Several instruments go more or less against each other, this gives a special but harmonious combination. In the meantime, details have also been incorporated. The end is extraordinary. This may be a debut album, but I’m already enthusiastic.

Eurydice’s Lullaby‘ start even lighter than I expected, I’m surprised. A. Leave his drums in peace, but from time to time he ‘rings’ the cymbals gently. Slowly and almost imperceptibly the tempo and volume increase a bit. The guitar playing is also pleasant. The drums first sound far in the background. When they can be heard a bit better, the sound is quite dull, but that suits the grubby sound of the music. After more than three minutes E starts singing, you can hear the emotion in her rough voice. The slower tempo gives a pleasant flow all the time. The instrumental piece has become heavier and a bit faster in the meantime. The tempo goes up for a short time. After that nice rock with heavy strings make way for lighter and somewhat slower music. The vocals go along with this, also this track is solidly built. As volume and tempo increase, grunts are added. Towards the end the music is light again.

Also, in ‘Invocation‘ you can hear mysterious music. The moment I think that the music will bark loose, this song of 44 seconds is already over.

In ‘Ghost Warriors‘ I am again impressed by the vocal qualities of E. She sometimes produces strong vocal outbursts. In the background she screams. This song seems to end, but it’s a very surprising twist, with the drums coming to the foreground for a while. Just before the special end E. shows us some clear vocals.

Lethean Bed‘ contains a fine mix of lighter and heavier music. The layers in the music sometimes melt together. The pleasant, slow flow gives this last song an experimental atmosphere.

The six tracks are well constructed. The balance between doom and rock/metal is great. Extensive instrumental pieces are very varied and sometimes look psychedelic. Again, E does all the vocals. All praise for her fantastic and versatile voice. Her voice has its own colour, together with the music ‘Crestfallen Queen‘ create its own style. Queen of Swords‘ is a fantastic debut, and should have lasted longer.
