De uit Griekenland afkomstige Constantine Kotzamanis begon met gitaarspelen toen hij twaalf was. Hij speelde zijn favoriete bands zoals Iron Maiden, Metallica, en Judas Priest na. Een paar jaar later liet hij zich ook beïnvloeden door Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde en andere gitaristen. Constantine heeft zeer gevarieerd gitaarspel in de vingers. Hij speelde in diverse bands, waaronder: Mystic Prophecy (2008-2012) en de extreme Griekse metalband Nightfall (2010-2013).
Constantine kwam in 2010 met zijn debuut ‘Shredcore’ en op 31 mei kwam ‘Aftermath’, zijn tweede soloalbum uit. Hier doen diverse gastzangers aan mee, waaronder Bill Manthos. Daarnaast speelt Bill ook bas en keyboards.

‘Bushido’ start met volle bak power vooral qua snelheid. Het drumwerk klinkt strak maar vlak, je mist de volle ronde klank van echte drums. Toch is deze instrumentale openingstrack opzwepend van karakter. Het gitaarspel is regelmatig heerlijk gillend. Op andere momenten zorgt het gitaarwerk, samen met de bas, voor een aangename, zware ‘body’.

Bjorn ”Speed” Strid is zanger in ‘Hellfire Club’. Delen van de tekst zijn uitnodigend om mee te zingen/mee te brullen, dit komt deels door de ‘couplet-refrein opbouw’. Cleane zang wordt afgewisseld met ‘duistere’ zang. Het drumwerk klinkt ook hier vrij flets. Maar samen met de snaren heeft de muziek een opzwepende werking. Weer is het gitaarwerk om van te smullen.

Het opzwepende blijft bestaan in ‘Press on Regardless’. Met vlagen ligt het tempo mega hoog. De lichtere elementen in muziek vormen een mooi contrast met de metal. Het zacht gespeelde en gezongen deel is verrassend. Qua opbouw is dit boeiender dan de eerste twee tracks. De fade out is een beetje jammer.

Zang en muziek vormen ook in de nummers die volgen een harmonie. Het einde van ‘Another Day’ had iets spannender gemogen, maar dat wordt goed gemaakt in ‘Holding on ’til the end’. Bovendien zijn hier de toetsen een prima toevoeging. Om nog even op het drummen terug te komen, hier klinkt het natuurlijk.

In ‘Elegy’ valt de variatie in de zang positief op. Alles is goed verdeeld over de speakers. Geheel op de achtergrond klinken symfonische elementen. Het akoestisch stukje is verrassend ingelast, tempo en volume worden weer omhooggestuwd. Dit lijkt weer een fade out te worden, maar op het moment dat de muziek weggedraaid wordt, komt de symfonie naar voren. Dit klinkt klein en integer, maar duurt helaas te kort.

De bonustrack start met een stampend ritme. Het is heerlijk om het volume flink open te draaien, ‘War and Pain’ dreunt hier door de huiskamer. De stem van Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer klinkt boos. Dit wordt aangevuld met enkele grimmige woorden achtergrondzang. Er is goed gebruik gemaakt van de mogelijkheid om te spelen met de verdeling van het geluid tussen de boxen. Gillend gitaarspel wordt afgewisseld of vermengd met de zwaardere klanken van (bas)gitaar. Dit lekkere portie metal maakt ook van de bonustrack een volwaardige en gave track.

Het nadeel van een groot aantal leadzangers kan zijn dat een album aan voelt als ‘los zand’. Dat is hier totaal niet aan de orde. Ondanks de verschillende stemmen en zangstijlen is de eenheid bewaard gebleven. Regelmatig zijn er meerdere stemmen gestapeld, ook dat is prima gedaan. Als het drumwerk de juiste dynamiek had gehad, dan waren de opzwepende nummers nog beter tot ontwikkeling gekomen. Deze acht nummers zijn best goed opgebouwd, al hadden ze wel langer mogen duren. De lichte, symfonische delen zijn meestal op de achtergrond aanwezig. Het fantastische gitaarspel van Constantine is goed gedoseerd ten opzichte van de overige muziek. ‘Aftermath’ zal bij rock- èn metalliefhebbers in de smaak vallen.

Again the guitar work really is something to enjoy.

The exciting continues to exist in ‘Press on Regardless‘. From time to time, the tempo is very high. The lighter elements in music form a nice contrast with the metal. The softly played and sung part is surprising. In terms of structure this is more interesting than the first two tracks. The fade out is a pity.

Vocals and music also form a harmony in the songs that follow. The end of ‘Another Day‘ could have been a bit more exciting, but that is made up for in ‘Holding on ’til the end‘. Moreover, here the keys are a fine addition. To get back to the drumming, here it sounds natural.

In ‘Elegy‘ the variation in the vocals is positive. Everything is well distributed over the speakers. Completely in the background you can hear symphonic elements. The acoustic part is surprisingly interlaced, tempo and volume are pushed up again. This seems to be a fade out again, but at the moment the music is turned away, the symphony emerges. This sounds minimal and sincere, but unfortunately it is too short.

The bonus track starts with a pounding rhythm. It’s great to turn up the volume, ‘War and Pain‘ roars through the living room. Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer’s voice sounds angry. This is complemented by a few grim words of background vocals. Good use has been made of the opportunity to play with the distribution of the sound between the speakers. Screaming guitar playing is alternated or mixed with the heavier sounds of (bass) guitar. This tasty portion of metal also makes the bonus track a full-fledged and cool track.

The disadvantage of a large number of lead singers can be that an album feels like ‘loose sand’. This is not an issue at all here. Despite the different voices and vocal styles, the unity has been preserved. Regularly there are multiple voices stacked, which is also well done. If the drums had had the right dynamics, the exciting songs would have developed even better. These eight songs are pretty well constructed, although they could have lasted longer. The light, symphonic parts are usually present in the background. The fantastic guitar playing of Constantine is well dosed compared to the other music. ‘Aftermath‘ will appeal to both rock and metal lovers.
