‘Blind Guardian’ is een progressieve power metalband uit Duitsland. Hun inspiratie voor het album ‘Legacy Of The Dark Lands’ komt van het boek ‘Die dunklen Lande’, van Markus Heitz. In het fictieve ‘Dark Lands’ woedde 400 jaar geleden een Dertigjarige oorlog in Europa, met name in Duitsland. Het verhaal gaat over een jonge avonturier, Aenlin Kane. Ze reist naar de neutrale stad Hamburg, om op onderzoek te gaan naar de erfenis van haar beroemde vader, Solomon Kane. Ze reist samen met een vriendin, Tahmina, een Perzische mysticus. Onderweg komen ze in de onrust van de oorlog terecht. Ze aanvaarden een missie van de West-Indische Compagnie. Maar onverwacht krijgt het verhaal een andere wending. Dat kan geen toeval zijn, Aenlin en Tahmina kennen het kwaad en de demonen die er rondlopen. Deze dames gebruiken de onrust van de oorlog in hun voordeel.
Voor ‘Legacy Of The Dark Lands’ is er samengewerkt met The Prague Filmharmonic Orchestra. Hierdoor is dit conceptalbum klassieker en theatraler dan wat we van ze gewend zijn. De power metal blijft achterwege, want het is geheel zonder elektrische gitaren.

De eerste minuut van ‘1618 Ouverture’ is qua sampling en muziek mysterieus. De klassieke elementen die steeds belangrijker worden, hebben een filmische waarde. Het geluid van de percussie is geweldig. Zo nu en dan is er woordeloze koorzang toegevoegd, steeds in harmonie met de muziek. Dit is één van de mooiste openingstracks ever! Je voelt dat er heel wat te gebeuren staat.
De gesproken woorden van ‘The Gathering’ vormen een inleiding van het verhaal. ‘War Feeds War’ start met klassieke muziek, dit begint klein en wordt prachtig opgebouwd. Dan begint Hansi Kürsch te zingen. Eerst klein, maar als het volume in de muziek toeneemt, gaat hij hierin mee. Weer is er koorzang, nu met woorden. Het orkest is fantastisch, de geluidskwaliteit is bovendien zeer goed. Hierdoor, en door de boeiende opbouw ben ik één en al oor. Na iedere track is er een gesproken nummer. Deze zijn vrij kort, zodat ze niet storend zijn, of al onderbreking aanvoelen. De intensiteit van bepaalde (delen) van nummers zijn duidelijk neergezet door zang en muziek. Groots en/of dramatisch gezongen en gespeelde stukken wordt afgewisseld met rustige delen.
Tijdens ‘In the Underworld’ is het geluid korte tijd troebel, dat lijkt jammer, maar het past bij de sfeer van het geheel. De zang en de koorzang is fenomenaal. Na een paar keer luisteren ben ik nog niet geheel eigen met het verhaal. Toch laat dit album mij niet los. De ene keer luister ik met koptelefoon, een andere keer dondert deze oorlog door mijn huiskamer.

De sfeer varieert van nummer tot nummer en soms binnen de nummers zelf. Er gebeurt ook zo veel in deze dertig jaar. Dat wordt vertaald in nummers waarin talloze wendingen zitten. De muziek is soms chaotisch en/of bombastisch, op andere momenten is het meer ingetogen. Maar ook dan zijn de verschillen bijna voelbaar.
Zang en muziek vormen constant een harmonie. Het aantal laagjes in zang en muziek is ‘ontelbaar’. Er is prachtig gebruik gemaakt van de klassiek georiënteerde koorzang. Tijdens de gesproken nummers wordt het verhaal verduidelijkt door sampling.
Na een rustige start krijgt ‘Harvester of Souls’ zo’n woordenstroom dat het te snel gaat om het te verstaan. Toch blijft het geheel meeslepend. Er klinkt strijdlust en volharding in ‘This Storm’. Langzaam komt het verhaal tot een einde. De rust lijkt aan het begin van ‘Beyond the Wall’ teruggekeerd. De theatrale aspecten zijn ook hier even later te horen. Als laatste ‘A New Beginning’, een gesproken nummer. De stilte hierna voelt bijna vreemd aan. Aan de manier waarop de bombastische en progressieve elementen zijn toegevoegd, is de horen dat Blind Guardian een metalband is. De klassieke elementen zijn vaak groots en dramatisch van opzet, en toch is het op pakkende en meeslepende wijze neergezet. Legacy Of The Dark Lands is een imposant album met fantastisch opgebouwde tracks. En als je een keer een andere luister beleving wil: De tweede cd is een instrumentale versie.

Blind Guardian‘ is a progressive power metal band from Germany. Their inspiration for the album ‘Legacy Of The Dark Lands‘ comes from the book ‘Die dunklen Lande’, by Markus Heitz. In the fictional ‘Dark Lands’, 400 years ago, a Thirty Years’ War raged in Europe, especially in Germany. The story is about a young adventurer, Aenlin Kane. She travels to the neutral city of Hamburg to investigate the legacy of her famous father, Solomon Kane. She travels with a friend, Tahmina, a Persian mystic. Along the way they find themselves in the turmoil of the war. They accept a mission from the West India Company. But unexpectedly the story takes a different turn. That can’t be a coincidence, Aenlin and Tahmina know the evil and the demons that walk around. These ladies use the turmoil of the war to their advantage.
For ‘Legacy Of The Dark Lands‘ there has been a collaboration with The Prague Filmharmonic Orchestra. This makes this concept album more classical and theatrical than what we are used to from them. The power metal is omitted, because it is completely without electric guitars.

The first minute of ‘1618 Ouverture‘ is mysterious in terms of sampling and music. The classical elements that are becoming more and more important, have a cinematic dimension. The sound of the percussion is tremendous. Every now and then wordless choral singing is added, always in harmony with the music. This is one of the most beautiful opening tracks ever! You feel that a lot is about to happen.
The spoken words of ‘The Gathering‘ are an introduction to the story. War Feeds War‘ starts with classical music, this starts small and is beautifully constructed. Then Hansi Kürsch starts singing. At first small, but when the volume in the music increases, he goes along with this. Again, there is choral singing, now with words. The orchestra is fantastic, the sound quality is also very good. Because of this, and because of the fascinating structure, I am all ears. After each track there is a spoken track. These are quite short, so they are not disturbing, or even feel as an interruption. The intensity of certain (parts) of songs are clearly defined by vocals and music. Large and/or dramatic sung and played pieces are interspersed with quiet parts.
During ‘In the Underworld‘ the sound is cloudy for a short time, that seems a pity, but it fits in with the atmosphere of the whole. The singing and the choral singing are phenomenal. After listening a few times I’m not entirely familiar with the story yet. Yet this album captures me. Sometimes I listen with headphones, other times this war rages through my living room.

The atmosphere varies from song to song and sometimes within the songs themselves. So much has happened in these thirty years. This is translated into songs with countless twists and turns. The music is sometimes chaotic and/or bombastic, at other times it’s more subdued. But even then, the differences are almost tangible.
Singing and music constantly form a harmony. The number of layers in vocals and music is uncountable. Classically oriented choral singing has been used beautifully. During the spoken songs, the story is clarified by sampling.
After a quiet start ‘Harvester of Souls‘ gets such a flood of words that it’s too fast to understand. Yet the whole thing remains compelling. There is a sense of fighting spirit and perseverance in ‘This Storm‘. Slowly the story comes to an end. Peace seems to have returned at the beginning of ‘Beyond the Wall‘. The theatrical aspects can also be heard here a little later. The final ‘A New Beginning‘, a spoken song. The silence after this feels almost strange. With the way the bombastic and progressive elements have been added, you can hear that Blind Guardian is a metal band. The classical elements are often massive and dramatic, and yet they are arranged in a catchy and compelling way. Legacy Of The Dark Lands is an impressive album with fantastic tracks. And if you want a different listening experience: The second CD is an instrumental version.
