Arshenic – Final Collision

Arshenic – Final Collision

Arshenic is a rock/metal band from Poland. They combine various styles, such as art rock, gothic metal, melodic metal and dark rock into one.
The band name refers to the poison arsenic, which is also used as a medicine. This contrast can also be heard on Final Collision, their second album. The lyrics are about individualism, self-expression and inner emotional states. They are not so standard because most of the lyrics are dark and poetic. Characteristic is the female vocals, which are both singing and screaming. Also, the guitar playing varies from clean to distorted. The rhythm section is not exactly standard. In the background there are cello’s and orchestral sounds.

Final Collision‘ has a quiet, rather sober start with details on the cymbals. Then you hear a few strokes of tight drumming, always with a rest in between.
Ofilia sings quite slowly, a few words, then again, a rest. This special start makes it immediately fascinating. Although the tempo and volume increase a bit, it remains rather quiet. The changes flow into each other. When the strings have been played quite heavily, a few matching grunts are added. The tempo of the drums in particular is high for a short time. When Ofilia sings, the music is light again, parts of the text are repeated. This opening track ends very predictably, especially when compared to the separate sound of the song.

Also ‘Dear Remorse‘ has a slow, rather sombre, instrumental start. The music becomes a bit lighter, Ofilia’s vocals fit that perfectly. When the music is heavier again, grunts and clean vocals alternate, this happens a few times. There is also an interaction between heavily played strings and lighter guitar playing, where the bass is more in the background. The rhythms, in which drums are leading, are often different. The sound of the whole is a bit too flat. The contrast between light and heavy is too small. This end dies away nicely on the strings.

Yet ‘Madness‘ is again fascinating, the bass grooves are cool. The rhythm is slow for a while, but unusual. There is a tightly played piece, in which several instruments take their turns resting. The awesome guitar solo is too soft to impress, which makes this song less vivid. The clear vocals, which are almost solo, are impressive. Again, there are cool rests built into the music.

At first ‘Cold‘ doens’t come ‘alive’ easily. The sound of a stringed instrument can be heard very far in the background, it almost disappears. The small played part, in which the drums stop for a moment, is beautiful. When the drums join in again, there is little dynamics, the timbre is too cold. The few grunts are well added. The guitarplaying playing is compelling, then there is a small piece played, in which the sound of the stringed instrument comes into its own. The combination of high and low tones is good, the end is slowly turned away. While the instruments themselves could have extinguished this track as well.

Atari‘ has a catchy rhythm. The singing is most probably in Polish. The poppy set-up has a rather cheerful and exciting atmosphere. The influences of rock/metal remain present. Here, the balance in volume between the mutual instruments is present. But here are less twists and less contrasts played between light and ‘dark’. This last song has an unimaginative fade out.

Because the contrasts between light and dark don’t come out so well, the songs don’t sound intense enough. There is a good use of the division between left and right of the headphones. But the balance in volume between the instruments could have been better. Despite the details in each song I am not completely drawn into the music. Also, the vocals don’t come on its own. Too bad because Ofilia has a beautiful versatile voice, and she is therefore rightly the flagship of Arshenic.
