Wille and the Bandits stonden afgelopen zomer op Bospop. Op zondagmiddag 27 oktober waren ze weer in Weert, nu in De Bosuil. Voordat dit drietal ging optreden, betrad een onbekende band uit St. Louis het podium. Hun lange naam, Al Holliday & The East Side Rhythm Band, is niet gemakkelijk om meteen te onthouden. De frontman van deze tienkoppige band is zanger/mutli- instrumentalist Al Holliday. Tijdens deze toer waren ze met zes personen.

De Bosuil geeft ook jonge en onbekende bands de kans om op te treden. Deze jonge band greep deze kans met beide handen aan. Al heeft een aangename, warm timbre in zijn stem, waar soms een klein schor randje op zit. Hij voelde zich direct thuis op het podium. Toetseniste Alexandra Sinclair had duidelijk plezier, ze bewoog al spelend mee met ‘Just like that’. Bovendien kleurde haar jonge stem mooi bij die van Al. In een aantal nummers had drummer Jared McFarland de achtergrondzang. Er werd prima gespeeld, maar er had wat meer interactie mogen zijn tussen de bandleden onderling. Dat stukje performance, mag bij een aantal bandleden nog wat groeien, net als het maken van oogcontact met het publiek. Niet bij iedereen zagen de uptempo nummers er levendig genoeg uit.

Bittersweet home Chicago

Al zong met passie en beleving, zijn warme stem zal ook de blues liefhebbers aanspreken. Op het gezicht en in de bewegingen van Alexandra was te zien dat ze de muziek voelde. In ‘Bittersweet home Chicago’ speelde trompettist Ryan Torpea mooi zacht, klasse! Ze speelden een prima gevarieerde, soul, funk en R&B set. Waarbij bassist Kevin Beaudrexl, heel gefocust, voor een prima basis zorgde. Nic Pitti gaf een mooie, maar iets te bescheiden aanvulling op de saxofoon. ‘Al Holliday & The East Side Rhythm Band’ viel in de smaak bij de fans van Wille and the Bandits, en is zeker een naam om te onthouden.

Tot ontzetting van de fans werd een poosje geleden bekend gemaakt dat drummer Andrew Naumann en bassist Matt Brooks volgend jaar geen Bandits meer zijn. Het toeren werd ze te veel in combinatie met hun gezin. Dit is dus het laatste optreden van dit drietal in De Bosuil. Toch waren er minder bezoekers dan verwacht. Veel of weinig publiek, The Bandits gaven zich al tijdens het eerste nummer, ‘Victim of the night’ helemaal. Wille zong en speelde, zoals altijd met bezieling. Andrew drumde even gretig en strak als altijd. En Matt was met zijn zes snarige bas veel meer dan alleen maar onderdeel van de ritmesectie.
Natuurlijk is dit drietal volledig op elkaar ingespeeld. Één blik was voldoende om elkaar te begrijpen en tempo en/of volume op te voeren. Voor verschillende nummers gebruikte Wille zijn lapsteelgitaar, zoals voor ‘Black Woman’. Hier bespeelde Andrew behalve zijn drumkit ook de jambe, waarbij hij sfeervol in het licht werd gezet. Wille danste mee op het opzwepende ritme.

Four Million Days

Matt speelde langzame, lage noten op zijn elektrische bas, solo. Andrew drumde, heel ingetogen een enkele slag. Door middel van subtiel oogcontact werden tempo en volume op subtiele wijze opgebouwd. Heel terecht was er tussentijds applaus. Na non-verbale communicatie vervolgde Wille op akoestisch gitaar. Met zijn schorre stem zong hij even zo goed als solo. De rust werd gaaf gespeeld, de fans luisterden ademloos toe. Wille speelde ook een stuk op zijn lapsteel. Zo werd ook dit nummer op imposante manier gespeeld en gezongen.

‘Angel’ is de ode aan Wille’s overleden moeder, en wordt ‘altijd’ gespeeld. Deze begon met een solo op de bas. Met behulp van zijn pedals/pedalboard toverde Wille de meest bijzondere, en gevoelige geluideffecten uit zijn Spaanse gitaar. Het publiek was hier muisstil. Tempo en volume werden opgevoerd, de mannen leken elkaar wel op te jagen om nog sneller te gaan spelen. Fans klapten spontaan mee. Het tempo vertraagde, de sfeer werd weer ingetogen. Wille speelde op ontroerende manier. Daarbij gaaf het minimalistische licht precies de juiste dosering om de emotie nog beter over te brengen. Menigeen had kippenvel, weer was er een extra applaus. Tijdens een nog emotioneler en kleiner gespeeld deel werd het kippenvel vast nog dikker. Na deze fenomenale versie van ‘Angel’ volgde er een aantal ‘feel good’ nummers. Ook deze werden fantastisch gespeeld, zelfs de rust in ‘Jack the lad’ verliep super strak.

1970 als afscheidsfeestje.

Het was niet verrassend dat ‘1970’ de toegift was. Nog even mocht men van dit drietal genieten. Matt and Wille stonden tegen over elkaar te spelen, ze genoten er duidelijk van. Andrew gaf een drumsolo weg. Natuurlijk was er ook bij hun het besef dat hun gezamenlijke avontuur ophoudt te bestaan. Het leek wel of ze nòg meer gaven dan anders. Zo werd ‘1970’ een heerlijk afscheidsfeestje. Na dit memorabele concert kwamen Wille, Matt en Andrew de zaal in. Voor de trouwe fans voelde dit als een heus afscheid. Zij namen met een hand of een dikke knuffel afscheid van Matt en Andrew. Natuurlijk hoopt men ze, in een andere samenstelling, weer eens terug te zien. Want Matt en Andrew blijven muzikant.
De toekomst voor Wille and the Bandits is al veiliggesteld! Vanaf volgend jaar zullen ‘The Bandits’ een kwartet zijn. Er staat al een toer door Engeland gepland. Ze komen vast en zeker ook naar Nederland. Hopelijk zijn ze dan weer te zien in De Bosuil.

Wille and the Bandits were at Festival Bospop last summer. On Sunday afternoon October 27th they were back in Weert, now at venue De Bosuil. Before this group of three went on stage, an unknown band from St. Louis entered the stage. Their long name, Al Holliday & The East Side Rhythm Band, is not easy to remember immediately. Al has a pleasant, warm timbre in his voice, which sometimes a lovely hoarse sound. He immediately felt comfortable on stage. Keyboardist Alexandra Sinclair clearly had fun, she moved along with ‘Just like that‘ while playing. Moreover, her young voice was nicely coloured with that of Al. In a number of songs drummer Jared McFarland had the background vocals. They played well, but there should have been some more interaction between the band members. That part of performance, may develop a bit for some of band members, just like making eye contact with the audience. Not everyone made the up-tempo songs looked lively enough.

Bittersweet home Chicago

Al sang with passion and afflatus; his warm voice will also appeal to the blues lovers. On the face and in the movements of Alexandra it could be seen that she felt the music. In ‘Bittersweet home Chigaco’ trumpet player Ryan Torpea played nice and soft, well done! They played a very well varied, soul, funk and R&B set. Bassist Kevin Beaudrexl was very focused, he provided an adequate base. Nic Pitti gave a beautiful, but slightly too modest addition to the saxophone. Al Holliday & The East Side Rhythm Band‘ was to the liking of fans of Wille and the Bandits, and is certainly a name to remember.

To the shock of the fans it was announced a while ago that drummer Andrew Naumann and bassist Matt Brooks will no longer be Bandits next year. The touring became too much for them in combination with their family. So, this is the last performance of the three of them in De Bosuil. Yet there were less visitors than expected. Lots or little audience, The Bandits gave themselves completely during the first song, ‘Victim of the night‘. Wille sang and played, as always with inspiration. Andrew drummed as eagerly and tightly as ever. And Matt, with his six-string bass, was much more than just part of the rhythm section.
Of course, the three of them are completely in tune with each other. One look was enough to understand each other and to increase tempo and/or volume. For several songs Wille used his lap steel guitar, like for ‘Black Woman‘. Here Andrew played not only his drum kit but also the jambe, this was set in the spotlight. Wille danced along to the rousing rhythm.

Four Million Days

Matt played slow, low notes on his electric double bass, solo. Andrew drummed, very subdued, a few strokes. By means of subtle eye contact, tempo and volume were built up in a subtle way. There was a well-deserved applause in its midst. After non-verbal communication Wille continued on acoustic guitar. With his hoarse voice he sang as well as solo. The rest was played flawlessly, the fans listened breathlessly. Wille also played a piece on his lapsteel. This song was also played and sung in an impressive way.

‘Angel‘ is the ode to Wille’s passed away mother, and is ‘always’ played. This started with a solo on the bass. With the help of his pedals/pedalboard Wille crafted the most special and sensitive sound effects from his Spanish guitar. The audience here was very quiet. Tempo and volume were increased, the men seemed to rush each other to play even faster. Fans spontaneously clapped along. The tempo slowed down, the atmosphere was subdued again. Wille played in a moving way. In addition, the minimalist light was just the right dosage to convey the emotion even better. Many had goose bumps, again there was an extra applause. During an even more emotional and smaller played part, this was a trigger for more goosebumps. After this phenomenal version of ‘Angel‘ a number of ‘feel good’ songs followed. These were also played fantastically, even the musical rest in ‘Jack the lad‘ was super solid.

1970 as a farewell party.

It was not surprising that ‘1970‘ was the encore. For a while one was allowed to enjoy this threesome. Matt and Wille were playing face to face, they clearly enjoyed it. Andrew gave away a drum solo. Of course, there was also the realisation that their joint adventure will end. It seemed as if they gave even more than usual. Thus ‘1970‘ became a wonderful farewell party. After this memorable concert, Wille, Matt and Andrew entered the hall. For the loyal fans this felt like a real goodbye. They said goodbye to Matt and Andrew by shaking hands or a big hug. Of course, fans hope to see them again, in a different formation. Because Matt and Andrew remain musicians.
The future for Wille and the Bandits is already secured! Starting next year ‘The Bandits‘ will be a quartet. A tour of England is already planned. They will certainly come to the Netherlands. Hopefully they can be seen again in De Bosuil.
