Low down and dirty
‘Every rose has it’s thorn’ staat vaak op de setlist. Zo kon men genieten van covers zoals: ‘Rosalie’, ‘Long hot summer’ e.a.

In ‘Heather’ liet Peter fantastisch gitaarspel horen.

Army of lovers
Één daarvan is ‘Army of lovers’.

Starfish Bowl is all the way back!

On Friday evening the 17th of January two local bands performed at De Bosuil (Weert) . This time the entrance was free. The back wall of the cafe area was equipped with a cozy wooden wall, complete with lights. This beautiful decor is allowed to stay!
The coverband Satisfied has been playing for years, they were allowed to open this evening. Singer/guitarist Wim Adriaens greeted the audience with: “We are Satisfied“. They started with ‘Butterfly‘ by Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Wim had a very clear pronunciation. Pier Vanlaer ‘shredded’ his guitar deliciously through an instrumental piece. Jo Gofers lives (so to speak) almost in De Bosuil, he usually does the light here. But now he was sitting behind the drums. He drummed tight but relaxed.

Low down and dirty
During ‘Low down and dirty‘ bass player ‘Bär van den Heuvel’ seemed to loosen up a bit. There was a nice interaction between him and Pierre. Because of the quiet way of performing of Satisfied, there was not much to see on stage. These guys played solid blues rock, the whole thing could have been more alive. ‘Every rose has it’s thorn‘ is often on the setlist. This ballad was performed very well. Wim often sang with his eyes closed, that was certainly allowed here. It was a pity in other songs, because you missed (eye) contact with the audience. For example, during ‘The old man down the road’ the band could have encouraged the audience to clap along. There was no rivalry between Pier and Wim. Both played really well, and so did the rhythm section. People could enjoy covers like: ‘Rosalie‘, ‘Long hot summer‘ a.o. Even though it could have been a bit livelier, it certainly was a successful performance.

Starfish Bowl
Starfish Bowl plays blues rock with psychedelic influences. In 2014 they broke up, luckily, they are back since 2018! In the 17 years of their existence they released four albums, the last one was ‘Dopamine’ from 2008. They started with an older song: ‘Mean Russian machinery (2005)‘. Marcel sang parts with his eyes closed, but you could see he was one with the music. During an instrumental piece Marcel involved the American flag, which hung on the sidewall, in his performance. As always, he had his own eccentric way of performing.
For ‘Dopamine‘ guitarist/backing vocalist Peter Thommassen sat behind the keyboard. You could understand almost every word, on top of that Marcel ‘nailed’ the high notes without any effort.

Sunshine 777
In all songs Marcel showed expression with his whole body, which was sometimes slightly theatrical. He gave it all!

All band members participated in the pleasant flow of the songs. Moreover, there was plenty of interaction and non-verbal communication on stage. In ‘Heather‘ Peter showed fantastic guitar playing. But in ‘In my youth‘ it was Peter-Mathijs Linsen (or PM) who drew the attention. His brother, Martijn Linsen, played the bass. He played well tight, on top of that the bass had a nice sound. Rob Kneepkens, the drummer with whom they started 17 years ago, is back. He gave the recognizable, tight intro of ‘Sunshine 777‘, just what it needed. The whole song has a tight rhythm Marcel encouraged us to clap along.
Through the years ‘Woman‘ has evolved. Because of the delays that are in it now, the pain came better alive. It’s clear what ‘Drag queen‘ is all about. If there was one song that did justice to Marcel’s extravagant way of performing, it would be here. Peter conjured up all kinds of psychedelic sounds from his guitar.

Ode to Gordon Downie.
Starfish Bowl paid homage to Gordon Downie, who died in 2017. He was the frontman of the Canadian band The Tragically Hip. They played among others ‘Blow at high dough‘.
PM picked up his acoustic guitar for ‘Bobcaygeon‘. The vocals weren’t flawless, yet while seated Marcel made an impression as well. They played very well small and subdued.
This one and the other covers felt very natural.

Army of lovers
Just before Starfish Bowl stopped they made some awesome songs. One of them is ‘Army of lovers’. This nicely composed song has great bass grooves. The passion stayed with all of them. Marcel had a bit too less power on his voice here.
The encore consisted of the song with which it all started: ‘Starfish Bowl‘. Peter and Martijn walked into the venue while playing. The instrumental piece was wonderful. Marcel’s vocals were very good.
Motivated as Marcel is, he didn’t like the fact that ‘Bobcaygeon‘ didn’t go well before. So that song was played again. For this one time he grabbed the lyrics. He started a bit hesitant, but gradually he ‘recovered’. Respect! Starfish Bowl gave a full-scale performance of over 1,5 hours. Hopefully they will stay for a long time to come!
After the performance a lot of people stuck around, it remained cozy until late after midnight.

In the coming weeks there will be a few more free concerts by bands from home and abroad. So, keep an eye on the schedule of De Bosuil.
