De Britse prog rockband Mostly Autumn is één van de bands al diverse keren in De Bosuil heeft opgetreden. Ieder optreden is anders, maar altijd van hoog niveau. Op vrijdagavond 25 oktober kwamen de fans weer naar Weert toe.
Het voorprogramma werd verzorgd door de Haagse band Kingfisher Sky. Deze band mengt klassieke-en folk elementen in hun soms stevige prog rock. Ze hebben zich laten beïnvloeden door bijvoorbeeld Kate Bush, Porcupine Tree, en Mike Oldfield.
Celliste Maaike Peterse kon vanavond niet. Daarom speelden ze vanavond ‘maar’ met vijf personen. Op een volledig donker podium verschenen de mannen. Toen zij ‘To turn the tables’ begonnen te spelen, verscheen Judith Rijnveld. De eerste noten die ze zong waren flink hoog, ze haalde ze moeiteloos. Tijdens een ingetogen stuk, gebruikte Ivar de Graaf één hand om de drumvellen zacht te raken.
Mercy on this wounded heart
De beweeglijke bassist Nick Verschoor trok soms flink aan zijn snaren. Maar tijdens het intro van ‘Mercy on this wounded heart’ hoefde hij niet mee te spelen. Het gitaarspel van Edo van der Kolk was heerlijk. Judith toonde een vrouwelijke, maar stoere manier van performen. Ze had volop interactie met Nick en Edo. In de rustigere stukken in ‘Technicoloured eyes’ kwam het keyboardspel van Erik van Ittersum prima tot zijn recht. Judith zong met emotie, dat kwam met name naar voren in ‘Cornelia’. Dit is een eerbetoon aan Chris Cornell, en aan anderen die moeite hebben met het leven. In bijvoorbeeld ‘Strength of the endless’ was er ruimte voor plezier, en dat lieten ze zien. Kingfisher Sky draait al meer dan 12 jaar mee. Toch was dit voor een aantal mensen een eerste (live) kennismaking, die goed in de smaak viel!
Mostly Autumn
Na de pauze begonnen toetsenisten Angela Gordon en Iain Jennings in het donker te spelen. De beelden op de beamer startten, en meer bandleden verschenen. Olivia Sparnenn kwam, onder luid applaus, als laatste op. Vrijwel meteen zong ze de eerste woorden van ‘Sight of day’, en dat deed ze zoals gewoonlijk zeer goed. Bassist Andy Smith stond vrij ver achterin, maar hij was (zeker voor zijn doen) al best beweeglijk. De gitaristen Bryan Josh en Chris Johnson zongen delen mee. Het snelle gitaarspel van Bryan was werkelijk super. Van flinke bak power daalden tempo en volume in één keer. Bryan speelde met passie. Henry Rogers is een dynamische drummer, in de uptempo stukken drumde hij met mooi accenten. In dit klein gespeelde deel ging hij perfect mee in de ingetogen sfeer, het publiek was muisstil. De wending naar het uptempo stuk verliep vlekkeloos.
The last climb
Na deze openingstrack van ruim 14 minuten begroette Bryan ons kort, maar hartelijk. Voor aanvang van ‘The last climb’ verliet Olivia de bühne, Bryan zong een groot deel van de tekst. Angela nam Olivia’s plaats achter de microfoon in, zij had een deel van de zang. Vervolgens speelde ze een heel mooi stuk op haar dwarsfluit. Vlak voor het einde speelde Bryan met ongekende emotie. Alles werd prima in het licht gezet.
Tijdens de klein gespeelde gitaarsolo van ‘Evergreen’ kwam Olivia langzaam teruggelopen. Olivia zong ingetogen, zij wist het publiek te raken met haar heldere zang.
In dit rustige stukje hoorde je een foutje van Bryan. Dat is zeldzaam, maar dat kan de beste gebeuren, het is immers live. De rest verliep goed, dat geldt ook de tempo-en volumewisselingen. Olivia pakte haar tamboerijn en ging naast Andy dansen. Het tempo vloog om hoog, ze gingen uit hun dak. Mostly Autumn had er duidelijk zin in, dat zag en voelde je aan alles.
White Rainbow
‘Burn’ was het eerste nummer dat van ‘White Rainbow’ gespeeld. Dit album kwam afgelopen voorjaar uit, en werd opgedragen aan medeoprichter, Liam Davidson. Hij overleed twee jaar geleden, totaal onverwacht. Ook ‘Western Skies’ komt van dit album. Dit nummer startte met toetsen, akoestisch gitaarspel en dwarsfluit. De rest van de band viel bij. Tempo en volume werden opgebouwd, het tempo werd opzwepend, Olivia spoorde iedereen aan om mee te klappen, dat deed men graag! Chris kampte met technische problemen. De show must go on, en het werd opgelost door de geluidstechnicus van De Bosuil. Na ‘Changing lives’ klonk het herkenbare intro van ‘Silver glass’. Ook vanavond zong Chris met zijn onvoorstelbare hoge en heldere stem dit foutloos. Henry bespeelde de cimbalen uiterst zacht. Deze ballad werd geweldig opgebouwd, onder andere door het fantastische gitaarspel van Bryan. Het einde werd prachtig klein gebracht.
Gaze
‘Tomorrow never dies’ begon heel rustig, maar dat ontaardde in een feestje op het podium. Zelfs Chris, die anders vrij rustig is, stond flink te dansen. Aan alle feestje komt een einde, zo ook aan dit concert. Men wilde een toegift, daarom was het flink rumoerig in De Bosuil. Chris en Angela kwamen als eerste terug. Zij begonnen akoestisch met ‘Gaze’. Het duurde even voordat bijna iedereen weer stil was. Fans waren onder de indruk van dit klein gezongen en gespeelde duet. Inmiddels was de voltallige band terug. Zij trakteerde de aanwezigen op ‘Heroes never die’ en ‘Forever and beyond’. Hoewel er weinig verrassingen op de setlist stonden, was alles zeer goed gespeeld en gezongen. Na bijna twee uur spelen werd het lange slotapplaus dankbaar in ontvangst genomen. Daarna nam Mostly Autumn alle tijd voor een knuffel en/of gesprek met hun trouwe fans. Zodoende bleef het tot in de kleine uurtjes gezellig in De Bosuil.

The British prog rockband Mostly Autumn is one of the bands that has performed several times in De Bosuil. Every performance is different, but always at a high level. On Friday evening October 25th the fans came back to Weert.
The support act was done by the band Kingfisher Sky from The Hague. This band mixes classical and folk elements in their sometimes-heavy prog rock. They have been influenced by Kate Bush, Porcupine Tree, and Mike Oldfield.
Cellist Maaike Peterse couldn’t make it tonight. That’s why tonight they played ‘only’ with five people. The men appeared on a completely dark stage. When they started playing ‘To turn the tables’, Judith Rijnveld appeared. The first notes she sang were quite high, she made them effortlessly. During a modest piece, Ivar de Graaf used one hand to touch the drumheads gently.
Mercy on this wounded heart
The agile bass player Nick Verschoor sometimes pulled his strings hard. But during the intro of ‘Mercy on this wounded heart’ he didn’t have to play along. Olivia Sparnenn was the last to appear, with loud applause. Almost immediately she sang the first words of ‘Sight of day‘, and as usual she did very well. Bassist Andy Smith was pretty far at the back, but he was (certainly for his part) already quite bouncy. The guitarists Bryan Josh and Chris Johnson sang along. Bryan’s fast guitar playing was really great. From a lot of power,the tempo and volume dropped in one go. Bryan played with passion. Henry Rogers is a dynamic drummer, in the uptempo pieces he drummed with beautiful accents. In this small part he played perfectly in the subdued atmosphere, the audience was very quiet. The twist to the uptempo piece went flawless.
The last climb
After this openingstrack of more than 14 minutes Bryan greeted us briefly, but warmly. Before the start of ‘The last climb‘ Olivia left the stage, Bryan sang a large part of the lyrics. Angela took Olivia’s place behind the microphone, she had a part of the vocals. Then she played a very nice piece on her flute. Just before the end Bryan played with unprecedented emotion. Everything was spotlighted very well.
During the small played guitar solo of ‘Evergreen‘ Olivia slowly declined. Olivia sang modestly, she managed to touch the audience with her bright vocals.
In this quiet piece you heard a mistake of Bryan. That’s rare, but that can happen the best, it’s live after all. The rest went well, the same goes for the changes in tempo and volume. Olivia took her tambourine and went dancing next to Andy. The tempo flew high, they went crazy. Mostly Autumn was clearly looking forward to it, you could see and feel that in everything.
White Rainbow
‘Burn‘ was the first song to be played from ‘White Rainbow‘. This album was released last spring, and was dedicated to co-founder, Liam Davidson. He died two years ago, totally unexpected. Also ‘Western Skies‘ comes from this album. This song started with keyboards, acoustic guitar playing and flute. The rest of the band joined in. Tempo and volume were built up, the tempo became exciting, Olivia encouraged everyone to clap along, they liked to do that! Chris was struggling with technical problems. The show must go on, and it was solved by the sound engineer of De Bosuil. After ‘Changing lives‘ the recognizable intro of ‘Silver glass‘ sounded. Tonight Chris also sang this flawlessly with his incredibly high and bright voice. Henry played the cymbals extremely softly. This ballad was built up wonderfully, among other things by Bryan’s fantastic guitar playing. The end was beautifully brought small.
Gaze
‘Tomorrow never dies‘ started very quietly, but that turned into a party on stage. Even Chris, who is otherwise quite quiet, was dancing a lot. All parties come to an end, also this concert. The people wanted an encore, so it was quite noisy in De Bosuil. Chris and Angela came back first. They started acoustically with ‘Gaze‘. It took a while before almost everyone was quiet again. Fans were impressed by this small sung and played duet. In the meantime, the full band was back. They treated the audience to ‘Heroes never die‘ and ‘Forever and beyond‘. Although there were few surprises on the setlist, everything was very well played and sung. After almost two hours of playing the long final applause was gratefully received. After that Mostly Autumn took all the time for a hug and/or conversation with their fans. As a result, it stayed enjoyable in De Bosuil until the wee hours.
