Focus bestaat zo’n 50 jaar, en daarmee is de band ouder dan sommige fans. Oprichter Thijs van Leer zou al lang met pension mogen gaan, maar hij staat nog steeds op de planken. Sterker nog: Focus heeft een uitgebreide tour door Engeland achter de rug. In een maand tijd hadden ze maar een paar vrije dagen. Op zondagmiddag 9 december sloten ze deze tour af met een optreden in De Bosuil, in Weert.
Onder luid applaus kwam Thijs alleen op. Hij nam plaats achter zijn Hammond en speelde solo op zijn dwarsfluit. Het publiek was meteen muisstil, je kon de camera’s om je heen horen klikken. Langzaam druppelden de overige leden het podium op. De dwarsfluit maakte plaats voor het orgel, de muziek was nog steeds ingetogen, dit was Focus I. Tempo en volume werden verhoogd. Op het orgel stonden twee microfoons, één voor de vervormde zang en één gewone. Thijs gebruikte eerst de microfoon waarmee het geluid vervormd werd, hij gebruikte zijn stem als instrument waardoor zijn stem één geheel werd met de muziek. Vervolgens zong hij enkele woorden in de gewone microfoon. Pierre van der Linden liet zoals gewoonlijk heerlijk drumwerk horen, met een mooi vol, rond geluid.
Gitarist Menno Gootjes speelde het intro van ‘House of the king’. Fans waren blij dit te horen en klapten spontaan mee. Udo Pannekeet is de ‘nieuweling’, hij speelde op een zes snarige bas. Voor aanvang van ‘Eruption’ heette Thijs ons van harte welkom. Dit deed hij zonder showelementen maar met oprechte warmte. Menno haalde met behulp van de tone-knop gave geluiden uit zijn gitaar. De mannen wisselden een blik, dat was het non-verbale sein voor de tempo en- volumewisselingen. Thijs had de ene hand op de toetsen, met de andere hand speelde hij dwarsfluit. ‘Eruption’ ging naadloos over in het meeslepende ‘Tommy’. Toen tempo en volume omhooggingen, waren we weer terug bij ‘Eruption’, Udo en Menno speelden het vuur bijna onder hun snaren vandaan.
Focus XI
‘Focus XI’ komt van hun gloednieuwe cd (de lp komt begin volgend jaar uit). Dit is een ingetogen titeltrack, Pierre gebruikte daarom brushes in plaats van drumstokken. Dit was indrukwekkend, en beloofde nogal wat voor de rest van de cd. Tot groot genoegen werd ‘Sylvia’ gespeeld. Thijs trok gekke bekken en maakte non-verbale grapjes. Kortom het werd een vrolijke boel. Er waren ruim vijftig minuten voorbij en de mannen lasten een korte pauze in. Na de pauze werd er gestart met ‘Who’s calling?’. Ook dit nieuwe, pittige nummer wist ons volledig te boeien. In ‘Focus VII’ was Thijs niet te horen via de microfoon. Maar ook zonder zijn ‘vervormde’, vocale bijdrage werden we geraakt. Udo heeft het nieuwe ‘Mare Nostrum’ (onze zee) gecomponeerd. Na een prachtig ingetogen en meespelend eerste gedeelte ging het gas erop. Het tempo bleef hoog, maar er waren wel degelijk wendingen.
‘Mazzel’ komt ook van Focus XI’. Wat was het heerlijk om live enkele nummers van het nieuwe album te horen! ‘Mazzel’ is heel anders dan ‘Mare Nostrum’, maar daarmee absoluut niet minder mooi. Na ‘La Cathedrale de Strasbourg’ gingen alle registers open voor een fantastische lange versie van ‘Harem Scarem’, waarbij Menno een gave solo liet horen. Één blik van Menno, en Udo en Pierre gaven hem muzikale ondersteuning. Nogmaals was Menno solo te horen. Na een subliem ingetogen stuk schroefde Menno het volume op, waarna Udo en Pierre erbij kwamen. Udo speelde een prachtige, uitgebreide melodieuze bas solo. Weer waren we onder de indruk van wat we hoorden. Hierna bleef Thijs alleen op het podium achter. Nu was het zijn beurt om een dwarsfluitsolo weg te geven, daarna soleerde hij met zijn orgel er lustig op los. De rest van de band voegde zich erbij. Dat was de opmaat voor ‘Hocus Pocus’. Natuurlijk werd dit herkend. De mannen speelden vol power. Na een subtiel gebaar van Thijs zongen we het hoge “OhhhOhhOhhh” mee. Het was van onze kant uit nogal vals, maar dat maakte niets uit. In deze uitzinnige sfeer deed Pierre er nog een schepje bovenop met een drum solo. Thijs keek ernaar, hij genoot er zichtbaar van. Kort na deze zeer uitgebreide solo, verdween dit viertal uit het zicht. Maar niet voor lang. We kregen een toegift. Deze bestond uit ’Focus III’. Dit ging over in ‘Answers Questions Questions Answers’. Een laatste keer liep Thijs naar het midden van het podium om op de dwarsfluit te spelen. Tijdens het nummer bedankte Thijs ons nogmaals, vanuit de grond van zijn hart, voor onze aanwezigheid. Met een paar laatste, lichte tonen eindigde dit concert. Focus trakteerde ons op een fenomenaal optreden van bijna drie uur!
Na afloop was het nog een tijd gezellig rondom de ‘merch-tafel’. Er werd ruim de tijd genomen om cd’s, posters en dergelijke te signeren. Bovendien was er ook alle gelegenheid om op de foto te gaan en een praatje te maken. Een enkeling kreeg zelfs een knuffel. Dit alles zorgde voor een memorabele Focus zondag.

Thijs first used the microphone to distort the sound, he used his voice as an instrument so that his voice became one with the music. Then he sang a few words into the regular microphone. Pierre van der Linden, as usual, performed delicious drumming, with a beautiful full, round sound.
Guitarist Menno Gootjes played the intro of ‘House of the king‘. Fans were happy to hear this and spontaneously clapped along. Udo Pannekeet is the ‘newcomer’, he played on a six-string bass. Before the start of ‘Eruption‘ Thijs welcomed us. He did this without show elements but with sincere warmth. With the help of the tone-button Menno got great sounds out of his guitar. The men exchanged a glance, that was the non-verbal signal for the tempo and volume changes. Thijs had one hand on the keys, with the other hand he played the flute. Eruption‘ went seamlessly over into the compelling ‘Tommy‘. When tempo and volume went up, we were back with ‘Eruption‘, Udo and Menno played the fire almost under their strings.
Focus XI
Focus XI‘ comes from their brand new CD (the album will be released early next year). This is a modest title track, Pierre used brushes instead of drumsticks. This was impressive, and promised quite a lot for the rest of the CD. To great pleasure ‘Sylvia‘ was played. Thijs drew crazy cymbals and made non-verbal jokes. In short, it was a cheerful lot. There were over fifty minutes past and the men charge a short break in. After the break they started with ‘Who’s calling?‘ This new, lively song also captivated us completely. In ‘Focus VII‘ Thijs could not be heard through the microphone. But even without his ‘distorted’, vocal contribution we were touched. Udo composed the new ‘Mare Nostrum’ (our sea). After a beautifully subdued and compassionate first part the throttle went up. The tempo remained high, but there were some twists and turns.
Luckily‘ also comes from ‘Focus XI‘. It was so wonderful to hear some songs from the new album live! Mazzel‘ is very different from ‘Mare Nostrum‘, but not less beautiful. After ‘La Cathedrale de Strasbourg‘ all registers opened for a fantastic long version of ‘Harem Scarem‘, where Menno played a great solo. One glance at Menno, and Udo and Pierre gave him musical support. Once again Menno could be heard solo. After a sublime modest piece Menno turned up the volume, after which Udo and Pierre joined in. Udo played a beautiful, extended melodic bass solo. Again we were impressed by what we heard. After this Thijs was left alone on stage. Now it was his turn to give away a transverse flute solo, after that he played solos with his organ. The rest of the band joined us. That was the prelude to ‘Hocus Pocus‘. Of course this was recognized. The men played full of power. After a subtle gesture of Thijs we sang the high “OhhOhhOhhhh” along. From our side it was rather false, but that didn’t matter. In this frenzied atmosphere Pierre added a drum solo. Thijs looked at it, he visibly enjoyed it. Shortly after this very extensive solo, this foursome disappeared from sight. But not for long. We got an encore. This consisted of ‘Focus III‘. This became ‘Answers Questions Answers‘. One last time Thijs walked to the middle of the stage to play the flute. During the song Thijs thanked us once again, from the bottom of his heart, for our presence. This concert ended with a few last, light tones. Focus treated us to a phenomenal performance of almost three hours!
Afterwards it was still a while around the ‘merch-table’. There was plenty of time taken to sign CDs, posters and the like. Moreover, there was also every opportunity to take a picture and have a chat. Some even got a hug. All this made for a memorable Focus Sunday.
