MoonKing Jan Hoving leads The Ministry of Rock & Roll

While harvesting the wheat, Jan Hoving freed up time so that I could interview him on behalf of Maxazine about the band The MoRR, which he founded. There was a precedent: Vandenberg’s MoonKings was founded some 7 years ago by Ad (Vandenberg). Jan Hoving became the singer, together with bassist Sem Christoffel and drummer Mart Nijen Es the MoonKings released three albums, the last one was ‘Rugged And Unplugged’ in 2018. Moreover, this foursome performed at packed venues, not only in the Netherlands but also in Japan. Jan told us that Ad was looking to hit to road continuous.

Ad wanted to tour in Spain, as a kind of belated promotion tour. Jan thought that was too late for that, because ‘Rugged And Unplugged’ had been out for a year already. But the costs/benefits were also out of proportion. “If the MoonKings had had a mega hit, and were asked everywhere, it would be a different story. Then I could have hired a manager to keep my business running. If you’re not known, touring abroad often costs more money than it generates.” says Jan. Moreover, it was in a period of time when he was very busy with his agricultural business. Of course, Jan understood Ad’s vision, because a tour would bring opportunities to perform at festivals again.

Unfortunately, you have to find another singer
Because Ad’s wish to tour extensively remained, there was a meeting with the management to explore all opinions. One of the things that was absolutely necessary was that the management could book the MoonKings without any restrictions. This was really not possible for Jan, as he not only has his own business, he also has a family with young children. That’s why his answer was: “If you want to do that, okay, as much as I regret it, but then I guess you’ll have to find another singer.”
If Mart and Sem wanted to join Ad, they almost had to let their own band (Ten Times A Million) go, because the MoonKings would get priority. That was not acceptable to them, because they already had a record deal with ‘JuiceJunk Records’.
Therefore, it was decided that the MoonKings would go on hold, and that Ad would continue under his ‘old’ name Vandenberg, this was the most comfortable arrangement for everyone.

The Ministry of Rock & Roll
The positive business owner didn’t throw in the towel, and called Carlo Gentenaar, his buddy from their former band ‘Stonefly’, with the question: “How about recording and releasing those songs we have on the shelf?” “Yeah cool, I’m in!” was Carlo’s response. Then Sem and Mart were called. “I wanted Mart and Sem definitely on the record, because they play awesome! We didn’t rehearse before we went into the studio. For me it was just book the studio and play immediately. We did make some demos beforehand. Carlo is a experienced musician, and Sem and Mart too of course. You can tell them how to play something and they just do it.”

Carlo came up with the name The MoRR (The Ministry of Rock & Roll), which they actually already had during Stonefly. There were plans to change the band name, but because it became obvious that Stonefly would end, they did not proceed. Jan didn’t have to think about it. Because he believes that his own name doesn’t sound very well from a commercial and international point of view.

Now’s As Good A Time As Any
Many songs of ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ come from the Stonefly time period. But they were never officially released, because Stonefly broke up. Jan mentioned that the sound quality was not good enough and that it was more like a demo. Passionately he continued: “They were good songs, a shame to let them be forgotten. The plan to release them one day had been in the back of my mind for a long time, and then the right moment came. The songs have been rearranged, and re-recorded. But we have a lot more, we have enough for another album, I think. Everything is in favour of the song, it isn’t hard rock. The MoRR is no MoonKings 2.0. I had instructed Mart and Sem don’t use all your power on it. And they have listened to that, less power but just as much passion!

Jan made conscious decision to choose ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ as the album title. “Because whatever is going on, also now with Covid, there are always good moments. It doesn’t matter when you release an album, any time is good.”
This solo debut will be released on 17 September. That will be a busy time for Jan, but he won’t stress about it. “It comes as it comes,” is his down-to-earth response. “I don’t feel like I have to prove anything. For me, it is a hobby, with a very large capital letter. Fun and laughter are the most important elements! Jan and Mart do most of the backing vocals, and Carlo occasionally. Jan had planned to hire more backing singers, but due to the lock-down that was not possible. The voices are doubled, sometimes you hear the same voice three times, but in a different tone. A few singles have already been released, for example ‘I Ain’t Feelin’ It’

The first goal was to make a record with the songs that were still there. In that respect, the project is already successful for Jan. And everything else is a bonus. He is realistic and does not expect mega sales. He compares it more or less to a photo on Face Book, the number of likes is not important to him. The fact that people like listening to the record and enjoy it is even more important to him than the sales figures. He paid for everything himself and hopes the investment will pay off. But he won’t worry when it doesn’t work out.

We’ve got our feet firmly planted in the blues
The beautiful acoustic intro of ‘Scars’ touched me immediately. When I asked Jan if the emotional lyrics were autobiographical, he fell silent for a moment. “Yes, he answered, “If a relationship goes wrong… it hurts… you didn’t have that relationship for nothing. When that ends, it always leaves a scar. It is autobiographical in itself, but many listeners will recognize themselves in it.”

I also was curious if ‘Kick like a mule’ was written with a particular woman in mind. “Carlo wrote the lyrics. I never asked him about it literally, because I want to find out for myself what I feel. Carlo will come up with the feedback of ‘yes, this is what I mean’ or ‘no, more like this’. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he has experienced it.” Jan says with a laugh.

In short, the lyrics are about love and the happiness or pain that comes with it. Jan explains the subject of singing about emotions: “The topic of ‘Ain’t Feelin’ it’ is not so great, yet it has a positive vibe. You don’t have to get a negative feeling from something that’s sad. If a song is sad, you can put more emotion in it. That’s because of the blues, our music is blues based, even more than the MoonKings because it’s more easy listening. We have our feet firmly planted in the blues! If it’s too cheerful, you get happy clap music, and I don’t like that.”

As pure as possible so the less reverb the better
Jan had a test mix made of ‘Ain’t Feelin’ It’, but the result was not what he was looking for. Jan explains: “A lot of music is over limited and there’s a lot of reverb on it. If you listen with headphones you can hear the vocals reverberate for miles. For me it has to be as pure as possible, the less reverb and effects the better I like it. If you have good musicians and everything is recorded well, you don’t need more. If you have to dress it up with all kinds of effects, you haven’t done anything right. If you listen to our record with headphones, you just hear the organic sounds, that’s cool.”
After about three test mixes they ended up at Werner Pensaert (Belgium). He immediately understood what Jan was looking for. Jan said that Werner said that they were the first ones who asked for less reverb.

That pure will (hopefully pretty soon) also be seen at live shows. Whether there will be live shows, that depends a bit on how the record will be received, but especially how the Covid will run in the near future.

Menno, Mart’s brother, plays the organ and the piano. “When we were recording, it went very well at once. Menno plays fantastic, he’s a real talent,” says Jan enthusiastically.
The alto sax is played by Coen Kaldeway. If it’s financially possible, Jan would like the organ and sax to be present at live shows as well. But he points out that he has to pay everyone who is on stage.

He fully endorses how he recorded ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’. However, Jan will be a little nervous about how it will turn out live. Jan describes: “With the MoonKings it was all about rocking out together, banging away. MoonKings fans wanted the band to rock. That will certainly be different at The MoRR, with ‘softer’ music it’s a different dimension. It’s harder to keep your attention. I’m curious how that will go, I see it as a challenge”, Jan concludes.

‘MoonKing’ Jan Hoving leidt The Ministry of Rock & Roll

The Ministry of Rock & Roll

Now’s As Good A Time As Any
Veel nummers van ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ komen uit de tijd van ‘Stonefly’. The MoRR is géén MoonKings 2.0.

Jan heeft bewust ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ als album titel gekozen.
I Ain’t Feelin’ It’

Zo puur mogelijk dus hoe minder galm hoe liever.

Hij staat volledig achter hoe hij ‘Now’s As Good A Time As Any’ heeft opgenomen.
