In 2016 bracht The Neal Morse Band ‘The Similitude of a Dream’ (TSOAD) uit. Dit album was gebaseerd op het boek ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ (uit 1678). Bij het uitkomen van TSOD was het al duidelijk dat er een vervolg zou komen. Deze opvolger heet ‘The Great Adventure’.

Als eerste hoor je het geluid van wind. De muziek gaat verder waar TSOD eindigde. Daarna gaat ‘Overture’ zijn eigen weg. De eerste woorden die Neal Morse zingt, raken mij. Deze start is nog mooier dan gehoopt!
Na een heel rustig begin komt er staccato muziek, stevig maar met lichtere elementen van strijkers en piano. Daarna wordt de muziek bombastisch. In dit aangename, uitgebreide instrumentale stuk volgen de wendingen elkaar (meestal) in hoog tempo op. Naadloos gaat deze epic over naar ‘The Dream Isn’t Over’. De rustige, ietwat staccato muziek is op de achtergrond, zodat Neal’s zang op de voorgrond is. Zijn stem is zoals altijd: prachtig. De cello en piano geven vlak voor het einde een ontroerende wending. Zo anders opent hoofdstuk 2 met ‘Welcome To The World’. Deze woorden worden door meerdere gezongen, fans weten dat dit een prachtige blend vormt. Dit komt nog beter tot uiting door de goede verdeling over de koptelefoon. Het gitaarspel wordt heerlijk gillend.
Al een paar keer heb ik kippenvel gehad, maar in ‘A Momentary Change’ bezorgt The Neal Morse band mij drie lagen dik kippenvel. Het ene fantastische nummer volgt het andere op. Ze zijn allemaal ingewikkeld, maar geniaal opgebouwd. Deze proggers maken zowel vocaal als instrumentaal de verwachtingen waar.. Eric Gillette is voor het grootste deel verantwoordelijk voor het gitaarwerk, en dat is fenomenaal. In de meeste nummers is er een wisselwerking tussen bombasme, strak gespeelde stukken en/of klein gespeelde delen. Deze veranderingen zijn soms plotseling, zang en muziek (en eventueel toegevoegde geluiden) zijn echter constant in harmonie. De nummers lopen mooi in elkaar over, zo vormen de hoofdstukken een echte eenheid. ‘To The River’ heeft een fenomenaal minimalistisch stuk, de ingetogen gitaarsolo die eraan vast zit, had ik niet verwacht, maar.. wow!

Het derde hoofdstuk start met ‘The Great Adventure’. De sfeer is vrij vrolijk door het ritme en de soms ritmische zang. De nummers grenzen nog steeds aan de perfectie. Of het nu het toetsenwerk is, bas, drum, gitaar en/of zang, alles is technisch zeer goed tot uitmuntend. De nummers zijn van begin tot en met het einde geweldig. Oké, ‘Hey Ho Let’s Go’ eindigt iets ‘gewoontjes’ in vergelijking met de rest. De eerste seconden van ‘Beyond The Borders’ maken dit weer helemaal goed. Dit nummer heeft filmische allure. Normaal is er een script voor een film, waarbij muziek gecomponeerd moet worden. Nu is de muziek er al, maar de film nog niet. Deze eerste cd is overweldigend goed.

Ook de tweede cd start met een Overture. De filmische muziek (met strijkers) gaat over naar een opzwepend ritme. De snaren worden soms zeer snel en rockend bespeeld. De toetsen sluiten hierbij aan.
‘Long Ago’ lijkt een tegenpool door de rustige start. Alle stemmen hebben een warme uitstraling. Ongemerkt zijn tempo en volume toegenomen maar het bombastische blijft weg. In ‘The Dream Continues’ gaat in deze rustigere trend verder. ‘Fighting With Destiny’ heeft een heel ander kaliber: de ritmesectie is strak. Daarnaast is de muziek af en toe chaotisch. Dit en de ‘creepy’ zang sluiten aan bij de woorden die gezongen worden. Het karakter van ‘Vanity Fair’ is verrassend vriendelijk. Het opmerkelijke einde past bij dit nummer. In ‘Welcome To The World 2’ zijn de snaren aangenaam veelvuldig aanwezig. Eigenlijk is er van alles veel, en dat is heerlijk. Ineens is er een klein gespeeld deel, dit is fantastisch ingevoegd. Ook de nummers die hierna komen zijn van hoog niveau.
Tijdens ‘Freedom Calling’ zijn de overeenkomsten met TSOD even heel duidelijk aanwezig. Met vlagen ligt het tempo flink hoog, maar het einde is klein gespeeld.

De zang en een vleugje muziek in ‘A Love That Never Dies’ zijn in perfecte harmonie. Dit nestelt zich diep onder mijn huid. De achtergrondzang doet hier nog een schepje bovenop. Je voelt aan iedere vezel van je lijf dat het einde van dit album nadert. Nog één keer wordt alles uit de kast gehaald. Heel langzaam sterft dit nummer weg zodat we de tijd krijgen om eraan te wennen dat dit geweldige album bijna afgelopen is.

Met TSOD lag de lat mega-hoog om dit op zijn minst te evenaren. The Neal Morse Band heeft zichzelf overtroffen, want grote delen van ‘The Great Adventure’ zijn adembenemend mooi. Daarmee is deze opvolger is nòg mooier dan zijn voorganger.

The Neal Morse Band – The Great Adventure

In 2016 The Neal Morse Band released ‘The Similitude of a Dream‘ (TSOAD). This album was based on the book ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ (from 1678). When TSOD was released it was already clear that there would be a sequel. This successor is called ‘The Great Adventure‘.

First you hear the sound of wind. The music continues where TSOD ended. After that ‘Overture‘ goes its own way. The first words Neal Morse sings touch me. This start is even better than I had hoped for!
After a very quiet start there is staccato music, solid but with lighter elements of strings and piano. After that the music becomes bombastic. In this pleasant, extensive instrumental piece the turns follow each other (usually) at high speed. Seamlessly, this epic goes over to ‘The Dream Isn’t Over‘. The quiet, somewhat staccato music is in the background, so Neal’s vocals are in the foreground. His voice is as always: beautiful. The cello and piano give a touching twist just before the end. Chapter 2 opens with ‘Welcome To The World‘, a different way. These words are sung by several, fans know that this is a beautiful blend. This is expressed even better by the good distribution over the headphones. The guitar playing becomes wonderfully screaming.
I’ve had goose bumps a few times already, but in ‘A Momentary Change‘ The Neal Morse band gives me three layers of thick goose bumps. One fantastic song follows the other. They are all complicated, but ingeniously constructed. These proggers live up to expectations both vocally and instrumentally… Eric Gillette is for the most part responsible for the guitar skills, and that is phenomenal. In most songs there is an interaction between bombasm, tightly played pieces and/or small played parts. These changes are sometimes sudden, but vocals and music (and possibly added sounds) are constantly in harmony. The songs blend nicely into each other, so the chapters form a real unity. To The River‘ has a phenomenal minimalist piece, I didn’t expect the modest guitar solo that is attached to it, but… wow!

The third chapter starts with ‘The Great Adventure‘. The atmosphere is quite cheerful because of the rhythm and the sometimes rhythmic vocals. The songs still border on perfection. Whether it’s keyboards, bass, drum, guitar and/or vocals, everything is technically very good to excellent. The songs are great from beginning to end. Okay, ‘Hey Ho Let’s Go‘ ends something ‘normal’ compared to the rest. The first seconds of ‘Beyond The Borders‘ make up for this again. This song has cinematic allure. Normally there is a script for a movie, where music has to be composed. Now the music is already there, but not the movie yet. This first CD is overwhelmingly good.

The second CD also starts with an Overture. The cinematic music (with strings) changes to a stirring rhythm. The strings are sometimes played very fast and rocking. The keys fit in with this.
Long Ago‘ seems to be an opposite because of the quiet start. All voices have a warm atmosphere. Unnoticed his tempo and volume increased but the bombastic stays away. In ‘The Dream Continues‘ this quieter trend continues. Fighting With Destiny‘ has a completely different caliber: the rhythm section is tight. In addition, the music is occasionally chaotic. This and the ‘creepy’ vocals match the words that are sung. The character of ‘Vanity Fair‘ is surprisingly friendly. The remarkable ending suits this song. In ‘Welcome To The World 2‘ the strings are pleasantly and frequently present. Actually, there is a lot of everything, and that is wonderful. Suddenly there is a small part played, this is fantastic inserted. Also the songs that follow are of high level.
During ‘Freedom Calling‘ the similarities with TSOD are equally clearly present. With gusts the tempo is quite high, but the end is played small.

The vocals and a touch of music in ‘A Love That Never Dies‘ are in perfect harmony. This nestles deep under my skin. The background vocals add to this. You can feel every fibre of your body that is approaching the end of this album. One more time everything is taken out of the closet. Very slowly this song dies away so we get time to get used to the fact that this great album is almost finished.

With TSOD the bar was mega-high to at least match this. The Neal Morse Band has outdone itself, because large parts of ‘The Great Adventure‘ are breathtakingly beautiful. That makes this successor even more beautiful than its predecessor.
