The current lineup of the Norwegian prog band Taskaha exists for about six years. But these five men have been active in music for much longer, performing at home and abroad. Not only did they play in various bands and projects, they also played in various genres. In 2016 they started with their debut album ‘Taskaha‘. On this album you can hear a mix of styles, timbres, and varied melodies. The quiet start of ‘Mind Date‘ is well distributed over the headphones. The volume is built up to rock. The voice of Rick Holmen is quite light. Yet he does have a small rough edge on his rock voice from time to time. Vocal pieces are alternated with instrumental parts. When the music is a bit louder, Rick’s voice is sometimes on the soft side. Furthermore, vocals and music are well balanced. The rhythm section forms a powerful basis, the guitar arrangements are fantastic. There are a lot of pleasant details that you won’t get all of them with just one listen. This captivating opening track dies nicely on the strings after a cool vocal outburst.
‘Distressed‘ is also very well constructed. There are cool twists and turns; one is quite sudden; another change is gradual. The stacked vocals are fine, almost everything has been sung by Rick. Just before the end there is a nice piece in fantasy language. ‘Daylight’s fading‘ starts with a piece of acoustic guitar playing, the first transition is a bit predictable. There are a lot of nice vocal details, great vocal playing, deliciously heavy strings and great details on the drums. The transitions from rock to acoustic and back are a bit less special. This is largely made up for by fantastic guitar work during an instrumental piece. In the end Rick sings as good as solo.
So every song has beautiful things: In ‘Invisible‘ some cool grunts form a nice diversity with the clean vocals. This song has a nice sudden end.
Especially in ‘Eden‘ the beautiful changes in tempo, volume and styles are striking. There are jazz influences, this goes over to rock, and then there is another minimalistic piece. The stacked vocals are nowhere too little or too much, everything fits perfectly. This song also has a nice ending.
The details in ‘The climb‘ make the start more and more mysterious. The guitar playing helps to build up the tension. The twist is a little less spectacular than expected. The music is on the borderline between rock and metal, this is alternated with slightly ‘sugary’ pieces. Again, Rick’s own voice colour and the versatile use of Rick’s voice stand out in a positive way. The mix of electric and acoustic guitar playing is beautiful. The build-up back to power is cool. When Rick sings full power, it seems as if it takes some effort, but that fits into the total. The end of this epic dies away nicely, and with that we have come to the end of this cd. A small point of criticism: In the smaller parts of ‘Nature girl‘ there are fittingly soft details on cymbals. But in the more heavy pieces the cymbals could have sounded a bit rougher. This also applies to some other songs. Although a single change is somewhat predictable, there are plenty of surprises. You hear that everything has been composed and played with care. Taskaha has made an excellent debut with their eponymous album.

De huidige line-up van de Noorse prog band Taskaha bestaat een jaar of zes. Maar deze vijf mannen zijn al veel langer actief in de muziek, en traden in binnen en buitenland op. Ze zaten niet alleen in diverse bands en projecten, ze speelden ook in diverse genres. In 2016 begonnen ze aan hun debuutalbum ‘Taskaha’. Hierop hoor je een mix van stijlen, maatsoorten, en gevarieerde melodieën. De rustige start van ‘Mind Date’ is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Het volume wordt opgebouwd tot rock. De stem van Rick Holmen is vrij licht. Toch heeft hij af en toe wel een klein ruw randje op zijn rockstem. Vocale stukken worden afgewisseld met instrumentale delen. Als de muziek wat harder is, is de stem van Rick soms aan de zachte kant. Verder zijn zang en muziek goed in balans. De ritmesectie vormt een powervolle basis, de gitaararrangementen zijn fantastisch. Er zijn aangenaam veel details die je niet allemaal met één keer luisteren mee krijgt. Deze boeiende openingstrack sterft na een gave vocale uithaal mooi weg op de snaren.
Ook ‘Distressed’ is zeer goed opgebouwd. Er zijn gave wendingen; de één is vrij plotseling, een andere verandering verloopt geleidelijk. De gestapelde zang prima, bijna alles is door Rick gezongen. Vlak voor het eind is er een leuk stukje in fantasietaal. ‘Daylight’s fading start met een stukje akoestisch gitaarspel, de eerste overgang is een beetje voorspelbaar. Er zijn veel leuke vocale details, gave vocale uithalen, heerlijk zwaar bespeelde snaren en prima details op de drums. De transities van rock naar akoestisch en terug zijn wat minder bijzonder. Dit wordt grotendeels goed gemaakt door fantastisch gitaarwerk tijdens een instrumentaal stuk. Op het einde zingt Rick zo goed als solo.
Zo heeft ieder nummer mooie dingen: In ‘Invisible’ vormen enkele gave grunts een mooie afwisseling met de cleane zang. Dit nummer heeft een mooi plotseling einde.
Vooral in ‘Eden’ vallen de mooie wisselingen in tempo, volume en stijlen op. Er zijn jazzinvloeden, dit gaat over naar rock, en vervolgens is er weer een minimalistisch stukje. De gestapelde zang is nergens te weinig of te veel, alles past perfect in het geheel. Ook dit nummer heeft een mooi einde.
De details in ‘The climb’ maken de start steeds geheimzinniger. Het meespelende gitaarspel zorgt er mede voor dat de spanning wordt opgebouwd. De wending is iets minder spectaculair dan verwacht. De muziek zit in het grensgebied tussen rock en metal, dit wordt afgewisseld met iets ‘zoetere’ stukjes. Weer valt de eigen stemkleur en de veelzijdige inzet van Rick’s stem positief op. De mix van elektrisch en akoestisch gitaarspel is prachtig. De opbouw terug naar power is gaaf. Als Rick volle power zingt lijkt het alsof dit hem moeite kost, maar dat past in het totaal. Het einde van deze epic sterft mooi weg, en daarmee zijn we aan het einde gekomen van deze cd. Een klein puntje van kritiek: In de kleiner gespeelde delen van ‘Nature girl’ zijn er passend zachte details op cimbalen. Maar in de meer heavy stukken liggen hadden de cimbalen wel wat ruiger mogen klinken. Dat geldt ook voor enkele andere nummers. Hoewel een enkele verandering wat voorspelbaar is, zijn er genoeg verrassingen. Je hoort dat alles met zorg gecomponeerd en gespeeld is. Taskaha heeft met hun gelijknamig album een prima debuut in de markt gezet.
