In 2017 vierde de Canadese prog rockband zijn veertig jarig bestaat met een grootse tour: ‘Saga’s Final Chapter’, een afscheidstournee dus. Een live album, met een overzicht van hun beste nummers, kon niet uitblijven. De titel van dit album is “So Good So Far – Live At Rock Of Ages’. Omdat dit over het algemeen bekende nummers zijn, die vaak live gespeeld worden, ga ik er niet te diep op in.
Cd 1
‘Take A Chance’ start met geluidseffecten en snel, dynamisch drumwerk van Mike Thorne. De geluidskwaliteit hiervan is super. Dan valt het vervolg in eerste instantie een klein beetje tegen. Het is iets minder helder van klank. Jammer want Saga is live steengoed. Michael Sadler zingt zuiver en met power. Tijdens dit openingsnummer is het publiek niet te horen. Na afloop klinkt er gejuich. Aansluitend volgen ‘On The Loose’, ‘ Help Me Out’ en andere pareltjes. Natuurlijk wordt het veertig jarig bestaan even genoemd tussen een paar nummers door. ‘Keep It Real’ is één van de nummers waarin het gitaarspel Ian Crichton mooi naar voren komt. In ‘Time’s Up’ halen de toetsen de aandacht naar zich toe. De meerdere vocalen mengen zich mooi met Michael’s stem. Na ieder nummer volgt er applaus. Tijdens de nummers zijn de fans nauwelijks te horen. Hierdoor mis ik een beetje de intense sfeer van een live beleving.
‘Will It Be You? (Chapter Four)’ is fantastisch, vooral het up-tempo stuk! Wat een gave nummers hebben deze mannen in der loop der jaren gemaakt. Het zit allemaal zó mooi in elkaar. Dit gaat nooit vervelen. De uitgebreide drumsolo (Frog Bite) is met vlagen behoorlijk snel gespeeld. Met het zeer goed gespeelde ‘What’s It Gonna Be?’ klappen de fans even mee in de maat. Toch lijkt het of ze nog niet uit hun dak gaan.

Met de eerste tonen van ‘Someone Should’ tik ik met mijn voet mee op het ritme. Het is en blijft mooi om een aantal decennia aan je voorbij te horen komen. Zo af en toe wordt er tussen de nummers iets verteld. Steeds maar kort, zodat het niet gaat vervelen.
Het vrolijk klinkende ‘Humble Stance’ is een nummer om mee te zingen. De rusten zijn super strak gespeeld. Na een flink uptempo stuk gaan tempo en volume omlaag. Tot je weinig meer hoort dan toetsen en Michaels zang. Als hij zich stilhoudt, zingt het publiek.
Ook ‘Scratching The Surface’ is een oudje dat gaat nooit vervelen. Live gespeeld al helemaal niet.
Het concert is echt tot leven gekomen, zeker tijdens’ ‘You’re Not Alone’. Dit nummer is nog altijd geliefd. Dat is te merken aan de reacties van de fans. Vooral in het tweede deel van het nummer is er een mooie interactie met het publiek.
Het feestje duurt voort in ‘Don’t Be Late’. En dat gaat niet meer weg. Dit is zoals een live concert hoort te zijn. Ook in de ‘The Flyer’ is er volop contact met de fans. Natuurlijk is alles geweldig gespeeld en gezongen door Saga. Dan wordt er gezegd: “Noch eine!” En dat wordt: ‘Wind Him Up‘. Het liefst had ik nog langer geluisterd, maar de cd is afgelopen.
Gillend of meeslepend gitaarwerk, lekkere bas grooves, dynamiek in het drummen, volop toetsen en prima zangkunsten, kortom alles is goed vertegenwoordigd.
Voor wie nog maar weinig Saga albums heeft, is ‘So Good So Far – Live At Rock Of Ages’ een zeer goed overzicht van de muziek van Saga. En voor de fans die (bijna)alles al hebben. Ja, dan hoort deze box in hun verzameling. Saga is gestopt, maar … zou dit ècht het laatste album zijn? Laten we hopen van niet!

Take A Chance‘ starts with sound effects and fast, dynamic drumming by Mike Thorne. The sound quality is super. Then the sequel is a little disappointing at first. The sound is a bit less clear. Too bad because Saga is live stoneware. Michael Sadler sings pure and with power. During this opening song, the audience is not to be heard. Afterwards there sounds cheering. Followed by ‘On The Loose‘, ‘Help Me Out‘ and other gems. Of course the forty year anniversary is mentioned in between a few songs. Keep It Real‘ is one of the songs in which the guitar playing Ian Crichton comes to the fore. In ‘Time’s Up‘ the keys get the attention. The multiple vocals mix beautifully with Michael’s voice. After every song there is applause. During the songs the fans can hardly be heard. Because of this I miss a bit the intense atmosphere of a live experience.
Will It Be You (Chapter Four)‘ is fantastic, especially the up-tempo piece! What a cool songs these men have made over the years. It’s all so beautifully put together. This will never get boring. The extensive drumsolo (Frog Bite) is played pretty fast at times. With the very well played ‘What’s It Gonna Be?‘ the fans clap in the beat for a while. Still, it seems like they are not going crazy yet.

With the first notes of ‘Someone Should‘ I tap with my foot to the rhythm. It is and remains beautiful to hear you pass by for a few decades. Every now and then something is told between the songs. Always short, so it doesn’t get boring.
The cheerful sounding ‘Humble Stance‘ is a song to sing along with. The rests are played super tight. After a big uptempo the tempo and volume go down. Until you hear little more than keys and Michaels vocals. When he keeps quiet, the audience sings.
Also ‘Scratching The Surface‘ is an old lady that never gets bored. It’s not played live at all.
The concert really came to life, especially during’ ‘You’re Not Alone‘. This song is still loved. This can be seen from the reactions of the fans. Especially in the second part of the song there is a nice interaction with the audience.
The party continues in ‘Don’t Be Late‘. And that doesn’t go away anymore. This is like a live concert should be. Also in ‘The Flyer‘ there is plenty of contact with the fans. Of course everything is played and sung by Saga. Then they say: “Neither eine!” And that will be: ‘Wind Him Up‘. I would have preferred to have listened even longer, but the CD is over.
Screaming or compelling guitar skills, nice bass grooves, dynamics in drumming, plenty of keys and fine vocals, in short, everything is well represented.
For those who have few Saga albums, ‘So Good So Far – Live At Rock Of Ages‘ is a very good overview of the music of Saga. And for the fans who already have (almost) everything. Yes, then this box belongs in their collection. Saga has stopped, but … Would this really be the last album? Let’s hope not!
