De start van ‘If You Fall, Pt.2’ is boeiend.

Singer/multi-instrumentalist Rikard Sjöblom we know from Beardfish and Big Big Train, and of course also from ‘his’ Gungfly. Friendship‘ is already the fourth album he releases with this band. Rikard found a youth photo on which he stood on top of a tree house. All kinds of memories about his childhood friends came to light. They grew up together, but disappeared from each other’s lives. Rikard has learned to accept the ‘loss’ of friends. Friendship‘ contains a collection of songs about and for his friends, dead or alive, in the past or the present. This album was released in November, but it’s too good to leave it alone.

Ghost of Vanity‘ has a rather quiet start, but the prog rock elements come quickly around the corner. Of course there is plenty of keyboard work to hear. After a lovely instrumental piece the tempo and volume go down a bit and the first words are sung. A short piece is sung a bit smaller and played. Then the throttle goes up again, again the organ playing is positive. The words are sung fast, the prog becomes nice and bombastic. In the end the piano sounds try to squeeze themselves in between.

Electronic sounds sound together with bass grooves at the start of ‘Friendship‘, this is nice and funky. The turn is cool and unexpected, there is fun played with the distribution over the headphones. There follows a twist to slow piano playing where guitar is added. When more instruments are added, tempo and volume go up again. So there is one change after another. This is a wonderfully extensive instrumental piece, which at some point becomes a bit melancholic. The guitar playing is compelling. Only after almost eight minutes Rikard starts to sing, this is a lyrics about (childhood) memories. Parts of the vocals consist of ‘stacked voices’. These form a fine blend. Instrumental and vocal pieces alternate. The piece he sings about a friend he misses, is sung with more and more emotion. The small piece that connects to this, underlines the emotion. This epic ends differently than expected, brilliant!

The start of ‘If You Fall, Pt.2‘ is fascinating. And Rikard’s Sjöblom’s Gungfly manages to hold on to that. This epic goes in all directions, yet they don’t fly out of the corner anywhere. The minimalist piece is very good, the tension is built up, there will be a change, but how and when? The change in tempo and volume takes longer than expected, but the construction is genius. The organ is played fast, the rhythm section is steady, that is necessary here. For a moment there is unrest in vocals and music, the vocal excerpt is full of emotion. The peace returns in a fantastic way. This is the introduction to a beautiful ending.

Crown of Leaves‘ is quite dreamy and friendly in nature. The vocals are warm and bright in colour, and constantly in harmony with the music. It contains all kinds of twists, from rock, to jazzy from laid back to a pretty high tempo.

They Fade‘ contains a touch of poppy influences, and listens the easiest way. The rest of the songs are more complicated. That may not be accessible everywhere, but it is very surprising. Just like friendships, ‘Friendship‘ has to grow as well. But once you’ve embraced this album, you don’t want to let it go.
