Quantum Fantay is een progressieve space rockband uit België. Hun inspiratie halen ze uit diverse bands, zoals Ozric Tentacles, Hydria Spacefolk,

‘Yemaya Orisha’ is alweer hun achtste studioalbum. Fluitist en medeoprichter Charles Sla is eenmalig terug als gastmuzikant. Voor het eerst is er vrouwelijke zang te horen.

‘Yemaya Orisha (Veautifull Mocean Part1)’ start met ruisend geluid. Dit valt samen met sferische muziek, waarin veel synthesizers te horen zijn. De vrij langzame muziek heeft bijna zweverig. De fluit komt door de toegevoegde geluiden niet op de voorgrond. Het gitaarspel is af en toe best rockend. Diverse geluiden lopen heen en weer in de koptelefoon, soms zorgen ze voor wat onrust. Steeds hoor je veel ‘synths’, daarnaast zijn er nogal wat laagjes in de muziek. Bovendien zijn er allerlei geluiden, waaronder het geluid van de zee. De mix tussen fluit en synthesizers, dan wel rock/elektrische geluiden is bijzonder. Dit alles zorgt ervoor dat je heel wat hebt om naar te luisteren.
Deze openingstrack loopt naadloos over naar deel 2 ‘Mami Wata (Veautifull Mocean)’. Hier creëren soundscapes een rustige atmosfeer. Je hoort allerlei mysterieuze geluiden, dit gaat langzaam over naar rock. De hogere tonen van de fluit worden hier doorheen gestrooid. Ondertussen hoor je regelmatig diverse geluidjes. Soms zijn ze laag en ‘zoemend’, op andere momenten meer ‘bliepend’. Er is een gave wending van rock naar mysterieus. Deze verandering springt er keer op keer uit Weer hoor je het geluid van de zee.

Na een korte stilte volgt ‘Riddles Of The Sphinx’. Deze track heeft een uptempo start van elektronische geluiden. Sommige delen hebben heel even wat weg van computerspelletje waarin SF-wapens worden gebruikt. De gesproken woorden zijn niet of nauwelijks te verstaan maar dat hoeft niet. Deze track is experimenteel van aard. Enkele stukken voelen zelfs als improvisatie. Tegelijkertijd is het rockend, en ‘stiekem’ wordt er best veel op je afgevuurd. Het einde is strak en onverwacht.

Na een kalme start van ‘Gemini Flower’ komt er ook hier van alles op je af. Bijvoorbeeld een klein snufje Arabische invloeden en het geluid van strijkers.

Het overgrote deel van ‘Serra Da Estrela’ is instrumentaal. De ‘zang’ bestaat uit enkele min of meer melodieus gesproken zinnen die samensmelten met de muziek. De woorden zijn vast in het Portugees, want ‘Serra Da Estrela’ is een bergketen in Portugal. De zachte ‘zang’ en de muziek passen prima bij de voorgaande tracks en bij de stijl van Quantum Fantay. En toch is het anders dan anders, prima gedaan. Je merkt dat er een opbouw naar het einde is, maar het eindigt iets eerder dan verwacht.

Een aantal nummers hebben wat herhalingen in het ritme of de melodie. Soms is dat fijn, want er is veel om naar te luisteren. Aan de andere kant zijn er vrij weinig spectaculaire wendingen. Het ‘spektakel’ zit vooral in de bijzondere geluiden. Een aantal van deze geluiden komen min of meer terug in diverse tracks, dat zorgt voor eenheid. En het voorkomt het gevoel dat er te veel op je afgevuurd wordt. Door allerlei geluidseffecten is het geluid niet kristalhelder. Sommige prog liefhebbers zullen dat misschien missen, maar het past bij de space-stijl van Quantum Fantay.

Various sounds run back and forth in the headphones, sometimes they cause some restlessness. Always you hear a lot of ‘synths’, besides that there are quite a few layers in the music. Moreover, there are all kinds of sounds, including the sound of the sea. The mix between flute and synthesizers, or rock/electric sounds is special. All this gives you a lot to listen to.
This opening track runs seamlessly to part 2 ‘Mami Wata (Veautifull Mocean)‘. Here soundscapes create a calm atmosphere. You can hear all kinds of mysterious sounds, this slowly changes to rock. The higher tones of the flute are scattered through it. In the meantime, you regularly hear various sounds. Sometimes they are low and ‘buzzing’, at other times more ‘bleeping’. There is a cool twist from rock to mysterious. This change is always evident. Again, you can hear the sound of the sea.

After a short silence follows ‘Riddles Of The Sphinx‘. This track has an uptempo start of electronic sounds. Some parts look a bit like a computer game in which SF-weapons are used. The spoken words are hardly understandable but that is not necessary. This track is experimental in nature. Some pieces even feel like improvisation. At the same time it is rocking, and ‘secretly’ a lot is fired at you. The end is played tight and unexpected.

After a calm start of ‘Gemini Flower‘ there’s a lot going on here as well. For example, a little bit of Arabic influences and the sound of strings.

The most part of ‘Serra Da Estrela‘ is instrumental. The ‘vocals’ consist of some more or less melodic spoken phrases that merge with the music. The words are probably in Portuguese, because ‘Serra Da Estrela’ is a mountain range in Portugal. The soft ‘vocals’ and the music fit well with the previous tracks and the style of Quantum Fantay. And yet it is different from the rest, well done. You notice that there is a build-up to the end, but it ends a little earlier than expected.

A number of songs have some repetitions in the rhythm or melody. Sometimes that’s nice, because there’s a lot to listen to. On the other hand, there are not many spectacular turns. The ‘spectacle’ is mainly in the special sounds. Some of these sounds are more or less reflected in various tracks, which creates unity. And it prevents the feeling that too much is being fired at you. Because of all kinds of sound effects, the sound is not crystal clear.
