Odessa2 – First steps

Het intro van ‘Tearing us apart’ is laid back.

Come to me’ heeft een mooie, sferische start.

First steps’ is het debuutalbum.

Odessa2 – First steps

About forty years ago there was a Limburg symphonic pop band called Odessa, but they stopped. Almost ten years ago two band members met again. A new band was founded, this is Odessa2. At first this seven-piece band only played covers. But from 2017 they added their own songs. Now their first album with the appropriate title ‘First steps‘ is out.

At the start of ‘Lovers lane‘ there are footsteps. Meanwhile, step by step more music is added. The footsteps are gone, the saxophone is nicely added. William Charlier-Souren’s vocal range doesn’t seem very wide, but he has a pleasant voice.
The multiple vocals form a fine mix. The instrumental piece listens easily, but there should have been a little more variation in the base. The long lasting notes on the keys mix nicely with the whole. The twists flow into each other.
I miss some dynamics in drumming, but Frans ten Bhömer does join in the softer part. This opening track ends with footsteps. Odessa2 has clearly thought about the structure.

The intro of ‘Tearing us apart‘ is laid back. Considering the text that Claudia Charlier-Souren sings, there would have been a little more melancholy in the music. The laidback has made way for mid tempo. This is a duet, again the voices color together fine.
Because there is fairly little variation in the details, also in terms of volume and rhythm, this song does not have the impact it deserves. The compelling guitar playing could have come to the fore a bit more.

Come to me‘ has a nice, spherical start. Despite the cool bass run, the beautiful saxophone and organ playing this track is a bit disappointing because of the number of repetitions in the rhythm. Frans drums on hybrid drums. In short, this is a mix of acoustic drums with electronic possibilities. The timbre of the drums is a bit too flat at times. In contrast to the previous songs, it ends with a fade out.

The first few seconds of ‘We meet in the middle‘ are promising because of the drumming. However, the rhythm quickly falls back to basics.
Again the harmony vocals are positive, although I sometimes miss some emotion in the voice(s). But vocals and music fit together.
Because of the space-like beginning the tension in ‘Last song‘ is built up. The expected, spectacular turn is not taken. This fits in the line of the previous songs. The guitar playing goes through this fairly rocking, while the rest of the music remains quieter. This last song also has some surprising elements.

These seven songs easily listen away. The tempo is quite quiet, the rhythm is consider basic. Also in this kind of songs there could have been more dynamics and changes in the drumming. The melody contains quite a lot of repetitions. If there had been some more variation, that would have certainly given an added value. This may be a bit too poppy and too little symfo for the symfo lovers. And maybe not poppy for the pop lover. Yet you notice that this accessible album is carefully and developed and played. Odessa2 remind me with gusts of the American progband Circuline.
First steps‘ is the debut album. The first steps are rarely perfect. But the growth will certainly come! At the end of January the release party is in Landgraaf. More information can be found on the website of Odessa2.
