Nick Fletcher – The Cloud of Unknowing

British guitarist Nick Fletcher (a.k.a. John Hackett Band) has been active in music for over forty years. His new album is based on Dante’s Inferno, the contrasts between “light” and “dark” are much greater here than on his previous album (Cycles of Behaviour from 2021). Nick says of ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’: “Perhaps because of the lockdown, I have a very personal inner journey that I have been on. I felt more freedom to pick up the guitar to express my pain and fear.”

The first few seconds of ‘Out of the Maelstrom’ are spherical. You feel that there will be an increase in tempo and volume, yet it comes sooner than expected. Soon there is another turn, now the music sounds more friendly. Nick’s guitar playing can be heard well, but he certainly hasn’t put himself in the foreground. For you can hear pleasantly many keys and delicious bass grooves. The drumming is dynamic, but the sound of the cymbals is too flaky/tinny. Most of the changes are quite gradual. Unnoticed, the whole is quite complex. At times, especially the guitar playing is quite fast. The change to a quieter part forms the build up to the end of the first song.

During the quiet beginning of ‘The Eyes of Persephone’ the cymbals are played gently, now the sound is beautifully clear. Sparkling piano sounds and compelling guitar play form a nice melange with the whole. Just before the end there is a beautiful transition into a minimalist piece, this gets under my skin. Actually, this is an epic of over 23 minutes, which consists of several scenes. These can be seen as “separate tracks” on the display. In ‘We Need to Leave This Place…Right Now!’ there are sampled sounds of a siren, among others. The sound of screeching brakes seems to be cut off a little too early. After this song of about 20 seconds follows ‘Pandemonium’. Due to the prog metal, this is quite different, but recurring elements from previous songs create unity. Sometimes parts of the music go against each other, as it were. Then Nick plays faster and more heavy than the other musicians, but the harmony remains. This is also true when all the musicians turn to prog metal. The end is beautifully tight.

‘The Cloud of Unknowing’ starts with various sounds including the striking of a (church) bell. The mysterious music contains nice details, the whispered phrases fit in nicely. In the background there seems to be wordless singing.
After a turn, the music sounds very different. Stuart Barbour has a beautiful voice and a clear pronunciation. During an instrumental piece, tempo and volume go up. These drop when the Stuart sings again, this keeps vocals and music in balance. Parts of this stay in your head pretty quickly. After a turn, there is beautiful compelling guitar playing, again I am touched. This flows into a very softly played ending with whispering words.

Special soundscapes and subdued music give the brief ‘Awakening the Hydra’ a mysterious atmosphere. You can clearly hear the transition to ‘Dance of the Hydra’. The prog metal is nicely interwoven with quieter elements. The end extinguishes nicely slowly.
‘Arcadia’ consists mainly of acoustic guitar sounds and a touch of spherical music. You might have to get used to the vocal start of ‘The Paradox’. Stuart sings his lyrics in a storytelling way, later you can hear that he has found “inner peace”. Again the guitar playing is varied, during the extended instrumental pieces there are several gradual transitions. In a calming section there are beautiful warm sounds. The minimalist piece contains subtle details. With a beautiful slow fade out this album ends.

Vocals and music form a unity, the vocals are mainly in the less heavy pieces. I am secretly curious how a potential next album would sound if there would be a metal singer for the heavy parts. The songs are well constructed, the variety on this (mainly instrumental ) album clearly shows Nick’s versatility.

Nick Fletcher – The Cloud of Unknowing.
