Nad Sylvan – The Regal Bastard

In deze serie verschenen eerder: ‘Courting The Widow’ (2015), en ‘The Bride Said No‘ (2017).

I Am The Sea’ is meteen intrigerend.

The Regal Bastard’ start uiterst minimalistisch.

Gestapelde stemmen geven ‘Leave Me On These Waters’ extra diepgang.

In ‘Diva Time’ is de achtergrond weer licht zoet.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree’ is een kalme track.

Nad Sylvan – The Regal Bastard

Nad Sylvan is one of the prog masters. This singer/multi-instrumentalist is sometimes a bit eccentric in his way of performing, but he is very passionate. ‘The Regal Bastard‘ is the last episode of a vampire trilogy. In this series, ‘Courting The Widow’ (2015) and ‘The Bride Said No‘ (2017) appeared earlier. The line-up of this last album is immense, and varies per song. That’s why I only mention bassist Jonas Reingold and drummer Nick D´Virgilio, they play in several songs. One day Nad wants to bring this trilogy to life on stage. To give you the atmosphere, I’ll discuss all the songs briefly.

I Am The Sea‘ is immediately intriguing. A number of sentences are half spoken, half sung. The backing vocals make a subtle but valuable contribution. When the volume in the music increases, all voices go along with it. Even without backing vocals, Nad of course knows how to impress with his versatile voice. In the played minor pieces, his voice sounds friendly, tender sometimes. At other times he produces a theatrical voice. Every now and then a touch of classical music is woven into the whole. The guitar playing is fantastic, and gives a bit of drama to the music. After that it continues rocking and imposing. The drums, here by Paul Mabury (That Sound), are impressive. This opening track is great!

The exceptional remains in ‘Oahu‘. The unusual music gives you the feeling that you have ended up in a fairy tale. The twists and turns are sometimes almost bizarre, but fascinating.
The sound is well distributed over the headphones, the sound quality is very good. The alternating number of layers is therefore brought into its rightful place.

After the fantastic first piece of ‘Whoa (Always Been Without You)‘, the sequel is a bit less surprising. The twists and turns flow into each other. The melody sticks in your head, the choral singing also contributes to that. The end is faded away, too bad.

The intro of ‘Meet Your Maker‘ has caught me. The number of details in the music is high, but you are not ‘overloaded’. Just before the end there is a cool turn to a small part played.

The Regal Bastard‘ starts very minimalistic. The low bass tones form a contrast with the lighter played music. The lighter music increases in volume while sparkling, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Light classical music is scattered through the whole picture. Sometimes this sounds together with light rocking elements. The tension in the music is beautifully built up. In this epic, you hear new things all the time.

Stacked voices give ‘Leave Me On These Waters‘ extra depth. Singing and music are quite sweet every now and then. The composition of the end is superior. The rock and background vocals make for a pleasant contrast in ‘Honey I’m Home‘. This instrumental track seems to fade away slowly. But it is a turnaround to a piece that contains piano playing. The end is tightly played.

In ‘Diva Time‘ the background is slightly sweet again. The music is quite quiet, but still slightly rocking. Singing and music are in harmony with each other.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree‘ is a calm track. With Nad’s warm voice and a whisper of music, the CD seems to end. Luckily, we can continue to enjoy an instrumental piece, after which this CD slowly goes down. This honorable end will come out even better on stage.
