Mystery – Theatre of the Mind

‘Theatre of the Mind’ is opnieuw uitgebracht door ‘Unicorn Digital’.

Welke versie beter is?

In 1996 the first album of the Canadian progband Mystery was released. Theatre of the Mind‘ was not only the first album for Mystery itself, but also the first album that the label Unicorn Records launched.
This was in the early days of the internet. It wasn’t easy then to get the attention of prog rock lovers. Still Mystery managed to grow into one of the most popular bands from Canada. And also Unicorn Records grew into a label that released more than a hundred albums in twenty years. Theatre of the Mind‘ has been re-released by ‘Unicorn Digital‘. The album has undergone a complete re-mix, of course with respect for the original sound, and the band composition of the time.

The sound in ‘Theatre of the Mind‘ is clear, and almost surrealistic at the quiet start. Gary Savoie has a beautiful clear voice with a high range. The background vocals are well added. Very occasionally there is a slight echo on the vocals and / or music. The original sound (from 1996) is flatter and duller, but a touch warmer in sound. The sound in the 2018 version is fuller. The rocking parts come out better. Which version is better? That will be for some this new version, for others maybe the original.
Lonely Heart‘ starts with subdued vocals and music, again the clarity of the sound is striking. But as a counterpart the sound is a bit less warm. The words contain some clichés. This is a slightly sweet ballad with small, rocking edges. At first the saxophone play melts with the music, but in the end it comes out clearly.

Black Roses‘ starts with sounds of storm and a touch of music with warmth. The build-up to more volume is slow, but impressive. The powerful sung words ‘Black Roses‘ are assisted by powerful music. Partly because of the fantastic turns in singing and music I am touched. Also in the small parts played there are quite a few layers in the music, including flute playing. Some repeats are a bit predictable, but on the other hand there are some unexpected changes. At least, for those who are not yet familiar with this first album of Mystery. This song also ends fantastic.

Also ‘Rythmizomena‘ is an instrumental track, with light classical undertones, which should have lasted longer.
The spherical, light classical start of ‘In My Dreams‘ is well expressed, just like the emotion on the vocals. Several vocals mix well with each other. The strings melt together with the music. This beautiful, modest song is a bit sweet.
Believe in your dreams‘ has more tempo and is ‘lighter’ in nature. After this comes the quieter ‘The Inner Journey Part 2‘ also this light classical, as well as rocking elements. Gary doesn’t only show subdued vocals, but also quite some vocals.

Heart of Stone‘ is the bonus track. After a quiet start, it gets a rocking sequel, with occasionally a light poppy rhythm. As expected, this last song is also well built. That makes this a fairly short, but good bonus track.

The feeling of fuller sound and clarity/verus less warm sounds remains. A plus point is that certain details come out better. Some parts come across as clinical. Therefore, the strings lack some impact, but they do form a whole with the music. Mystery knows how to touch me in almost all songs. If you consider that this was their debut, you can only draw one conclusion: ‘Hats off!
