De Italiaanse zanger/multi-instrumentalist Marco Ragni maakt progressieve en psychedelische rock. Hij heeft diverse albums uitgebracht, waarvan ‘Oceans of Thought’ pas uit is. De drums zijn vrij basic bespeeld, maar dat mag hier. Er is al genoeg om naar te luisteren. De omslag naar een rustiger deel, en het rustige deel zelf, zijn zeer goed. Er volgen nog verschillende ‘twists en turns’. De achtergrondzang geeft een vrij zoete toevoeging. Daarbij hoor je ook Marco’s stem, met zijn eigen kenmerkend geluid. De opzet van ‘Dizziness’ is niet heel toegankelijk, maar wel boeiend.

Marco zingt de woorden van ‘Hammil’s Thoughts’ gevoelig, daarmee weet hij mij te raken. Met zijn stem, in combinatie met enkele pianoklanken, weet hij mij later nog een keer te raken, maar dan intenser. Als er meerdere stemmen samenklinken blijft de emotie bewaard.

‘Oceans of Thought’ start met vrij snelle, lichte pianoklanken. Gitaar en piano vormen een prima harmonie met elkaar en met de zang die soms uit meerdere stemmen bestaat. Zo nu en dan is een enkele stem ingezet als instrument. Dit geeft, samen met leadzang en de muziek, een bijzondere maar rustige combinatie van laagjes. De drums hebben zich een tijdlang stil gehouden, maar als Maurizio Antonini begint te spelen, drumt hij eerst rustig, in lijn met het geheel. Het gevarieerde gitaarspel is om je vingers bij af te likken. Na diverse wendingen eindigt de titeltrack prachtig ingetogen.

Het speciale geluid in ‘Voice in the Dark’ komt van de sitar vandaan. Dit is een snaarinstrument uit India, de Indiase invloeden zijn te horen, maar overheersen nergens. Marco’s zang is constant in balans met de muziek. Ook de instrumenten onderling vormen een prima harmonie.

Pianospel speelt een belangrijke rol in ‘Open My Arms’. Er klinkt emotie door in de stem van Marco, dat blijft zo, ook als tempo en volume toenemen. Oceans of Thought‘ starts with fairly fast, light piano sounds. Guitar and piano form an excellent harmony with each other and with the vocals that sometimes consist of several voices. Every now and then a singular voice is used as an instrument. This, together with lead vocals and the music, gives a special but quiet combination of layers. The drums have kept quiet for a while, but when Maurizio Antonini starts playing, he begins by drumming quietly, in line with the whole. The varied guitar playing is finger-licking. After several twists the title track ends beautifully subdued.

The special sound in ‘Voice in the Dark‘ comes from the sitar. This is a string instrument from India, the Indian influences can be heard, but nowhere dominate. Marco’s vocals are constantly in balance with the music. The instruments among themselves also form an excellent harmony.

Piano playing plays an important role in ‘Open My Arms‘. Emotion can be heard in Marco’s voice, that’s how it stays, even when tempo and volume increase. The unity remains, despite the variation within this song can be heard. Bjørn Riis’ guitar playing varies from compelling to rocking. This last track ends sooner than expected after a lovely long build-up.

The songs are sung and played intensely, but are not too tough to listen to. There is a beautiful, balanced interaction between the rocking parts and the subdued/acoustic parts. The music is complex, but it doesn’t feel that way. Marco has his own special voice, because of his versatile voice there is a unique balance with the music.
