Lazleitt is een prog rockband uit Washington DC., opgericht door zanger, componist en multi-instrumentalist Alex Lazcano. Nog geen jaar geleden bracht hij zijn debuutalbum, ‘On The Brink’. Dit album kreeg lovende recensies. Nu is zijn tweede album ‘Perpetually Under Idle Grounds’ uit.
Zoals verwacht is ‘Prelude’ een kalme track. De rock komt in ‘A Furtive Shelter’ in eerste instantie heel voorzichtig. Na de lichte rock volgt een mysterieus stuk. De langzame muziek en zang klinken een beetje terneergeslagen. In de tekst wordt het verleden met het heden verweven. De ‘paper bag’ is een verwijzing naar de (hedendaagse) papieren tassen van de apotheek. Daarmee wordt bedoeld dat men te afhankelijk is geworden/gemaakt van de farmaceutische industrie. Deze epic bestaat uit negen delen, meestal hoor je de wending naar een volgend hoofdstuk, maar binnen de hoofdstukken zijn er ook transities.
Het aantal laagjes en details is soms best hoog. Instrumentale en vocale delen wisselen elkaar af. Het fantastische gitaarspel van Eric Gillette en Carlos Hernandez is soms meeslepend, dan weer rockend of gillend. Daarnaast speelt ook Alex gitaar. Hoewel de gitaren met vlagen ruimschoots aan bod komen, is het nergens over de top. Eric bespeelt ook het drumstel, en dat doet hij op de juiste momenten dynamisch. Na een rockend deel is de vervormde zang vrij zoet. In andere stukken hoor je invloeden van bands als ‘The Neal Morse Band’. Je voelt de opbouw naar het einde aankomen. Al wordt dit langer gerekt dan gedacht, maar dat is niet erg!
Muziek en zang zijn in eerste stuk van ‘Gallows Hill Dossier 1: Grace Sherwood’ zacht en buitengewoon langzaam. Dit komt in het begin merkwaardig over. Maar Grace Sherwood werd in het koloniale Amerika vervolgd vanwege hekserij. Met dit in je achterhoofd en luisterend naar de tekst (eventueel met het tekstboekje in je hand) vallen de puzzelstukjes op zijn plaats. Hier heeft Alex de lead gitaar, en voegt een vleugje rock toe. Met het geluid van strijkinstrumenten loopt het over naar ‘Gallows Hill Dossier 2: Bridget Bishop’. Bridget Bishop werd ook gezien als heks, misschien dat daarom de zang onnatuurlijk klinkt. In een klein gespeeld deel worden de langzaam gezongen zinnen ondersteund met een vleugje muziek. Maar iedere noot is raak, de spanning wordt opgebouwd. Het vervolg is minder spectaculair dan gehoopt. De volumetoename had extremer gemogen. Ook de paar wendingen die hierna komen hadden intenser gekund. Dan was ook het minimalistisch einde beter tot zijn recht gekomen.
De zang in ‘The Owl And The Blue Rose’ blijft wat vreemd van sound, maar het past in het geheel. Al was een realistisch en/of puur geluid misschien mooier geweest. Her en der hadden de volumeverschillen groter gemogen, bijvoorbeeld tussen pianoklanken en orgelspel. Zo was de mystieke sfeer beter tot leven gekomen, en had het klein gespeelde stukje ook meer indruk gemaakt. Het ingetogen deel is te vlak, en het mist een afgeronde opbouw naar het einde.
In meerdere tracks mis ik de juiste volumeverschillen tussen de rock en klein de gespeelde delen. Ook het volumeverschil van de instrumenten onderling had beter gekund. Nu komt de intensiteit onvoldoende tot uiting. Liz Tapia had ik nog niet genoemd, haar stem vormt een mooie blend met die van Alex. De tracks hebben een paar luisterbeurten nodig om op je in te werken. Instrumentaal bevatten de tracks nogal wat details. Door de historische aspecten zijn de teksten niet eenvoudig. Bovendien zijn er ook dingen uit de huidige maatschappij in verwerkt. ‘Perpetually Under Idle Grounds’ is complex. Misschien wat minder toegankelijk dan het debuutalbum, maar wel boeiender.

Lazleitt – Perpetually Under Idle Grounds
Lazleitt is a prog rockband from Washington DC, founded by singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Lazcano. Less than a year ago he released his debut album, ‘On The Brink‘. This album received rave reviews. Now his second album ‘Perpetually Under Idle Grounds‘ is released.
As expected ‘Prelude‘ is a calm track. The rock comes in ‘A Furtive Shelter‘ at first very carefully. After the light rock follows a mysterious piece. The slow music and vocals sound a bit depressed. In the lyrics the past is interwoven with the present. The ‘paper bag’ is a reference to the (contemporary) paper bags of the pharmacy. This means that people have become too dependent on the pharmaceutical industry. This epic consists of nine parts, usually you hear the turn to the next chapter, but within the chapters there are also transitions.
The number of layers and details is sometimes quite high. Instrumental and vocal parts alternate. The fantastic guitar playing of Eric Gillette and Carlos Hernandez is sometimes compelling, sometimes rocking or screaming. Alex also plays guitars. Although the guitars can be heard amply at times, it’s nowhere over the top. Eric also plays the drums, and at the right moments he plays them dynamically. After a rocking part, the distorted vocals are pretty sweet. In other pieces you can hear influences of bands like ‘The Neal Morse Band’. You can feel the buildup heading towards the end. Although this is stretched longer than expected, but that’s okay!
Music and vocals in the first part of ‘Gallows Hill Dossier 1: Grace Sherwood‘ are soft and extremely slow. At first instance, this seems remarkable. But Grace Sherwood was persecuted in colonial America for witchcraft. With this in the back of your mind, and listening to the words (possibly with the booklet in your hand), the puzzle falls into place. Here Alex has the lead guitar, and adds a touch of rock. With the sound of string-instruments, it flows into ‘Gallows Hill Dossier 2: Bridget Bishop‘. Bridget Bishop was also seen as a witch, maybe that’s why the vocals sound unnatural. In a small played part, the slowly sung sentences are supported by a hint of music. But every note is a touching, the tension is built up. The sequel is less spectacular than expected. The increase in volume could have been more extreme. The few twists and turns that follow could have been more intense as well. Then the minimalist end would have come into its own.
The vocals in ‘The Owl And The Blue Rose‘ remain a bit strange in style, but it fits into the whole. Although a realistic and/or pure sound might have been nicer. Here and there the differences in volume could have been bigger, for example between piano sounds and organ playing. In this way the mystical atmosphere would have come alive better, and the small played piece would have been more impressive. The subdued part is too flat, and it lacks a certain structure towards the end.
In several tracks I miss the necessary volume differences between the rock and the small played parts. Also, the volume difference between the instruments could have been better. Now the intensity is insufficiently reflected. I hadn’t mentioned Liz Tapia yet, her voice is a nice blend with Alex’s voice. The tracks need a few listening sessions to affect you. Instrumentally the tracks contain a lot of details. Because of the historical aspects the lyrics are not that simple. Moreover, there are also things from today’s society incorporated. ‘Perpetually Under Idle Grounds‘ is complex. Maybe a less accessible than the debut album, but more captivating.
