L ’Ira Del Baccano – Si Non Sedes iS – LIVE MMVII

Allerlei wendingen vloeien in elkaar over. Bijna non stop gaat dit over in ‘Sussurri Di Nascita Celeste/Grateful to Jerry’.

L ’Ira Del Baccano – Si Non Sedes iS – LIVE MMVII

L ‘Ira Del Baccano is a band from Italy. They make instrumental psychedelic prog rock to which they add space and doom. Si Non Sedes iS – LIVE MMVII‘ is a live album, where the addition “MMVII” actually stands for 2007. This album has been circulating through the ‘unofficial roads’ since 2008. Now the album is finally officially released thanks to Subsound Records.

Doomdance‘ starts mysteriously. The space sounds almost seem to come off an UFO (from a fantasy film). Occasionally Alessandro “Fred” Salvi plays a beat on his drum kit, always with a break in between. The doom that follows is nicely set on fat. All kinds of twists flow into each other. The doom is gone for a while, so the electronic sounds appear. Then it becomes heavy and dingy again. Heavy strings and all kinds of sounds form a nice mix. Lighter parts are alternated with heavier music. The space sounds regularly make their way between all this. “Fred” lets his cymbals occasionally ring full. But just before the end he touches these in detail, after which the space continues for a while. Almost non stop this turns into ‘Sussurri Di Nascita Celeste/Grateful to Jerry‘. The music is quite quiet, but especially experimental in nature.
There is a slow increase in tempo and volume. Then suddenly the rock is heavier. This becomes more exciting, both in volume and rhythm, sometimes the tempo is quite high. The turns are usually gradual. All this creates a fascinating structure. After this song you will hear the audience for the first time, only then you will realise that this is a live album. Also in ‘875‘ and ‘Don Bastiano‘ you can hear fine guitar playing, delicious bass grooves and good drums. Of course we should not forget the keys and the added sounds.
Some parts are busy and complex, others are psychedelic and/or mysterious. Moreover, there is also the heavier sound, whether or not dingy in sound and, last but not least, the space.

The last song, ‘Tempus Inane Flago Requiem Spatiumque Furori‘, continues in the same way. The songs fit together very well. Although they are in the same line in terms of style and sound, it doesn’t get boring. Because here too there are plenty of transitions. The tempo changes a number of times from quite high and exhilarating, to subdued and almost minimalistic. Of course the volume goes along with this. The build-up to the end of this epic has been extended for this live performance.

You have a lot to listen to. That’s why it takes a while before you know the songs a bit. Because you don’t hear much from the audience, the live experience is a bit less. Advantage of this is that the songs almost run non stop. It is quite a challenge to play these songs live, because the twists and turns cannot be counted, and the whole is complicated.
The sound is well distributed over the headphone/boxes, the sound quality may be on the dull side, but this is in line with the heavier music.
It’s great to turn up the volume of the CD player a bit further and let the music thump through the house.
