Jet Black Sea komt uit Leiden en bestaat slechts uit twee personen. Dit zijn Michel Simons and Adrian Jones (Nine Stones Close). Ze spelen experimentele progressieve muziek met een behoorlijke dosis (electronic) ambient. Hun nieuwe album heet ‘The Overview Effect’. Hier staan slechts drie nummers op. De titeltrack duurt maar liefst ruim 35 minuten.
Escape Velocity heeft een voorzichtige start. Er wordt ondertussen een spanningsboog opgebouwd of er wel of geen plotsklapse wending zal zijn. Maar deze komt niet. De track blijft vrij rustig. Het geluid goed is verdeeld over de boxen. Dit geeft de mysterieuze muziek wat extra’s. Bijna verslapt mijn aandacht. Maar dan komt er toch nog vrij onverwacht een rockende wending. De snaren zijn hier van de partij. Even later komt de zang erbij. De rock blijft nog even. Vlak voor het einde keert de rust terug.
Ook ‘The Overview Effect’ is in het begin mysterieus en rustgevend. Dan komt er ‘percussie’ bij. De zang smelt samen met de muziek. De sfeer blijft dromerig. De muziek heeft te veel pit om echt als ‘chill factor’ te dienen. Maar het neigt wel die kant op. Zoals verwacht zijn er vooral toetsen en elektronische klanken te horen. Door allerlei toegevoegde geluiden hoor je regelmatig iets anders.
Zo nu en dan komen de snaren erbij. Ondanks de herhalingen die ‘groepsgewijs’ te horen zijn, zijn er wel degelijk wendingen. Deze verlopen geleidelijk, waardoor de dromerige sfeer blijft bestaan.
Ook tijdens de gesproken sampling gaat deze sfeer niet verloren. Deze sampling duurt vrij lang.
Met een verrassende verandering in de muziek weet Jet Black Sea mijn aandacht terug te winnen. Daarna volgen er nog een paar wendingen die zeker de moeite waard zijn. Ondanks alles word ik niet echt geraakt door deze lange, epic track. Hoewel geen topper, is het wel degelijk een goede track, die een lange opbouw naar het einde heeft.
Het pianospel in Home (E.D.L) had ik na de elektronische klanken van de titeltrack niet verwacht.
De zang past er goed bij. Deze laatste track vormt een vrij groot contrast met de voorgaande. Ook hier is de sfeer kalm. Als de drums zich stilhouden, wordt de piano ondersteund door sferische klanken.
Dit is een prima match. Ook het vervolg is erg goed. Nu word ik wel geraakt, mede door de ‘strijkers’ en het gitaarwerk. Het einde is in eerste instantie vrij onverwacht.
Ondanks het contrast tussen deze laatste en de eerste twee tracks is het geheel in balans. De rust overheerst, de rockende elementen zijn in de minderheid. Dat is geen punt van kritiek, maar een sfeeromschrijving. ‘The Overview Effect’ is daarom een prima cd als je wat meer zin hebt in iets rustigere muziek.

The sound is well distributed over the boxes. This gives the mysterious music some extras. Almost slackens my attention. But then there is still a rather unexpected rocking turn. The strings are here. A little later the vocals are added. The rock stays for a while. Just before the end the peace returns.
Also ‘The Overview Effect‘ is mysterious and soothing in the beginning. Then there is ‘percussion’. The vocals merge with the music. The atmosphere remains dreamy. The music has too much pit to really serve as a ‘chill factor’. But it tends in that direction. As expected there are mainly keys and electronic sounds to be heard. Through all kinds of added sounds you regularly hear something else.
Every now and then the strings are added. Despite the repetitions that can be heard ‘in groups’, there are indeed twists and turns. These are gradual, so that the dreamy atmosphere remains.
Also during the spoken sampling this atmosphere is not lost. This sampling takes quite a long time.
With a surprising change in the music Jet Black Sea manages to regain my attention. Then there are a few more turns that are definitely worthwhile. Despite everything I am not really touched by this long, epic track. Although not a topper, it is a good track, which has a long build up to the end.
The piano playing in Home (E.D.L) I had after the electronic sounds of the title track not expected.
The vocals fit well with it. This last track forms a fairly large contrast with the previous one. Again, the atmosphere is calm. When the drums keep quiet, the piano is supported by spherical sounds.
This is an excellent match. The sequel is also very good. Now I am touched, also by the ‘strings’ and the guitar skills. The end is quite unexpected at first.
Despite the contrast between the latter and the first two tracks, the whole is in balance. Peace dominates, the rocking elements are in the minority. That is not a point of criticism, but a description of the atmosphere. ‘The Overview Effect‘ is therefore a fine CD if you feel more like something quieter music.
