In Continuum – Acceleration Theory

In Continuum – Acceleration Theory

After the break-up of Sound of Contact (= SOC), multi-instrumentalist Dave Kerzner founded the prog band In Continuum. He brought along a few former members of SOC, these are his own: Randy McStine (also The Fringe) and bass player Matt Dorsey. This team made the concept album ‘Acceleration Theory‘ with a large number of other musicians. This debut album is about a female alien, AlienA (performed by Leticia Wolf). She finds out that earthly humanity will be destroyed by the ‘Galactic Council’, and goes to earth to warn us. She falls in love with Kai, an earthly man. This is expressed by Gabriel Agudo (Steve Rothery Band).

Crash Landing‘ starts with short space-like sounds. After that there are quite a few layers in the music. The vocals are partly in between talking and singing. But there are also parts in which the words are sung. For both it is in balance with the music. The details of the strings are beautiful, the guitar playing (by Steve Hackett) is beautiful. After a lovely instrumental piece follows a nice build-up to the end.

As the album progresses it is clear that we are dealing with an accessible prog album. Maybe you have some trouble to get into the story. Because there is not much drama and/or science fiction sounds in it. The atmosphere images will therefore not be equally clear to everyone.

Racing Through The Past‘ is an instrumental song, and has caught me the first few seconds. It feels mysterious, and a bit floating, but literally: as if you’re floating through a dream. That ‘floating’ disappears when music takes a more dark, dark turn, the mysterious remains. Especially because a voice has been added as an instrument. It merges with the music. This song turns into ‘AlienA‘. Her vocals sound slightly distorted and quite far in the background. It fits within the overall picture, but is a bit harder to understand. This is also because she sings a few songs in her own, unintelligible language. This beautiful duet sometimes has a special, but fantastic rhythm by drummer Marco Minneman. Different musical styles pass by. In general, these styles have a rousing, ‘poppy’ character.

Meant To Be‘ is a short song with a spherical start, the words ‘I remember’ are repeated several times, this runs through the normal text. Also here there are a lot of layers in vocals and music. Maybe you should listen to this album a few times before all this falls a bit into place. The whole thing is more complicated than it seems at first sight. The same goes for ‘Man Unkind‘. Dave’s voice forms a nice blend with the layers in the music. The drumming is sometimes very subtle, but that’s the beauty of it. The violin is pushed forward nicely a little later a fine restless piece follows in the music, after which this song ends with a fade out.

Vocals and music are not dramatic and/or theatrical. That may not support the storyline much, but the lyrics make it clear. Moreover, you can read along in the well-kept textbooklet. This booklet contains some more information about the story itself. There are several fantastic guitarists participating, you can certainly hear that back. You hear quite a few layers, including strings. Acceleration Theory‘ is an accessible album, which is more complicated than it seems. These twelve songs need to grow.
