Hasse Fröberg heeft vooral met The Flower Kings heel wat albums gemaakt. Met zijn prog band Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion heeft hij net zijn vierde album, ‘Parallel Life’ uitgebracht. Dat werd eigenlijk wel tijd, want het vorige album, HFMC, is alweer vier jaar oud. De stijl van het mooie artwork verraadt al dat dit het werk is van Ed Unitsky is.
De minimalistische start van ‘Parallel Life’ zet mijn oren direct op scherp. In de rock die volgt zit onder andere heerlijk orgelspel.
In een rustig stuk klinken de eerste vocale tonen, eerst nog even als instrument, dit valt mooi samen met muziek. In de eerste zin komt de social media revolutie aan bod. De woorden zijn in balans met de muziek, de geluidskwaliteit van dit alles is goed. De toonhoogteverschillen in de drums zijn goed te horen. De achtergrondzang is soms een beetje zoet, maar de harmonie tussen de stemmen is zeer goed. De wendingen verlopen soms vloeiend, soms meer plotseling, maar altijd mooi. Door de hoeveelheid wendingen valt het niet altijd mee om de overgang van het ene naar het andere hoofdstuk te horen. Er is volop variatie in de verdeling van de instrumenten. Dan wordt het ene instrument naar de voorgrond geduwd, dan weer een ander. Heerlijke rockende delen worden afgewisseld met lichtere/rustige stukken. In beide ligt het aantal laagjes regelmatig flink hoog. Zang en muziek vormen constant een eenheid. Sommige hoofstukken hebben flinke stukken tekst. Maar hoofdstuk IV, ‘Hand to the sky‘ telt slechts één zin, maar heeft daarom een heerlijk uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk. Dit bevat onder andere super gitaarspel en toetsenwerk om je vingers bij af te likken. Ook het laatste deel is fantastisch, kortom dit is een hele gave epic.
Het begin van ‘Rain’ is minimalistisch gespeeld en gezongen. Langzaam komen er meer instrumenten bij, het integere gevoel blijft bewaard. De eerste zinnen komen binnen, ze gaan over het verloren gevecht om te (over)leven. Een poosje blijven tempo en volume op ongeveer hetzelfde niveau, dan worden beide opgebouwd. De achtergrondzang is zonder woorden en is vrij zoet van klank, hiermee verandert de emotie.
De woorden “You left without saying goodbye” worden hartverscheurend gezongen en dito gespeeld, dit intensiveert de emotionele lading. Even later verandert het klein gespeelde deel naar meeslepend, dit zorgt voor extra impact. Als de muziek weer zacht is, wordt een aantal zinnen herhaald, daarna krijgt het geheel een iets vrolijker karakter. Helaas eindigt het in een fade out.
Aan het begin van ‘Never alone’ is de melodie kalm. De tekst gaat over liefhebben/houden van. De kalmte verandert als de ritmesectie er duidelijk bij komt. Prima keuze, want het voorkomt dat dit nummer te zoet wordt. De geloofwaardigheid blijft, ook als er met meer power gezongen wordt. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk vliegt het tempo omhoog, de tempo en volumewisselingen volgen elkaar in een behoorlijk tempo op. Dit is prog met een hoofdletter P! De opbouw naar het einde is super!
Door de licht poppy structuur is ‘All those faces’ iets minder verrassend. In veel nummers is er een fantastische dynamiek in het drummen, maar in bijvoorbeeld ‘Friday’ is dit wat minder. Verder niks dan lof, dat geldt voor de ritmesectie, het toetsenwerk, en het fantastische gitaarspel, dat vaak uit meerdere laagjes bestaat. Ook de leadzang, achtergrondzang en de combinatie hiertussen is dik in orde. Dit, en de eerdergenoemde pluspunten zorgen ervoor dat ‘Parallel Life’ een zeer goed album is.

The minimalist start of ‘Parallel Life‘ immediately puts my ears on edge. In the rock that follows, there is, among other things, wonderful organ playing.
In a quiet piece the first vocal tones sound, first as an instrument, this coincides nicely with music. In the first sentence the social media revolution is discussed. The words are in balance with the music, the sound quality of all this is good. The pitch differences in the drums can be heard well. The background vocals are sometimes a bit sweet, but the harmony between the voices is very good. The twists and turns are sometimes smooth, sometimes more sudden, but always beautiful. Because of the amount of twists it is not always easy to hear the transition from one chapter to another. There is a lot of variation in the distribution of the instruments. Then one instrument is pushed to the foreground, then another. Lovely rocking parts are alternated with lighter/quiet parts. In both the number of layers is regularly quite high. Singing and music form a constant unity. Some chapters have large pieces of text. But chapter IV, ‘Hand to the sky‘ only counts one sentence, but therefore has a wonderfully extensive instrumental piece. This includes super guitar playing and keyboard work is finger licking. Also, the final part is super, in short this is a very cool epic.
The beginning of ‘Rain‘ is played and sung in a minimalistic way. Slowly more instruments are added, the feeling of integrity is preserved. The first sentences touched me, they are about the lost battle for survival. For a while the tempo and volume remain at about the same level, then both are built up. The background vocals are wordless and have a rather sweet sound, this changes the emotion.
The words “You left without saying goodbye” are sung and played heartbreakingly, this intensifies the emotional charge. A little later, the small part played changes to compelling, which creates an extra impact. When the music is soft again, a number of sentences are repeated, after which the whole gets a more cheerful character. Unfortunately, it ends in a fade out.
At the beginning of ‘Never alone‘ the melody is calm. The lyrics are about loving. The calmness changes when the rhythm section is obviously added. Great choice, because it prevents this song from becoming too sugary. The credibility remains, even when singing with more power. During an instrumental piece the tempo flies up, the tempo and volume changes follow each other in a remarkable tempo. This is prog with a capital P! The build-up to the end is super!
Because of the slightly poppy structure ‘All those faces‘ is less surprising. In many songs there is a fantastic dynamic in drumming, but in for example ‘Friday‘ this is a bit less. Nothing but praise, that goes for the rhythm section, the keyboards and the fantastic guitar playing, which often consists of several layers. But also lead vocals, background vocals and the combination of these are very good. This, and the aforementioned plus points, make ‘Parallel Life‘ a very good album.
