Frank van Essen is a modest man who has put himself in the spotlight by his many talents. He plays drums and violin, among other things. As if that were not enough, he plays all kinds of percussion instruments and keyboards. He is also an arranger, composer and producer. At the end of last year he released his instrumental album ‘Sanctum‘.

Labyrinth‘ starts with subdued, clear violin playing. I was immediately touched, especially because it is a fine match with the honest music that is added in the background.
The small details in the music are beautiful. The first changes are smooth. You are triggered to listen intensely but the diversity of instruments, such as acoustic guitars, flute playing and percussion. The quiet music secretly consists of a lot of layers. Also in the faster and happier (folk) part there are a lot of layers and details. The compelling guitar playing is pushed to the foreground. Several instruments also melt together regularly. This opening track is perfectly balanced!
The songs that follow are really beautiful and fit nicely together, yet the differences are big enough. So ‘Cats in the Bakery’ has the most ‘pit’, without it falling out of the tone with the rest.

Frank wrote ‘A Million Stars‘ in his teens. Twenty years ago was number on the album ‘Open Sky’ by Iona. Dave Bainbridge and Frank recorded this song for ‘Sanctum‘ on location, totally improvised. Afterwards two small adjustments were made. The start of this version is spherical. Bar chimes occasionally ring gently through it. Frank plays his violin slowly, the music nestles under the skin. Some pieces he plays solo. At other times the keyboard mixes in the background. This is beautifully interwoven with the sometimes very high, but constantly intense violin playing. Details of the bar chimes are sprinkled through this as ‘stardust’. These clear, soft tinkling sounds give the feeling of more and more stars appearing in an indigo blue sky. In a way you can only see when you are in the middle of now where. If you are in such a special place where light pollution has no chance, then you see the beauty of countless stars. This dreamy atmosphere remains throughout the song.

Origins‘ starts beautifully and mysteriously. High and low tones sound through each other, in a wonderfully slow tempo. The percussion builds up the tension. Again the number of layers and the diversity of details are striking. The tempo and volume have been increased unnoticed. A gradual turn creates a different atmosphere. Vibrating tones of the bouzouki sparkle through this. This is in perfect harmony with piano and sober sounding strings. After a while percussion details are added. A little later this epic dies away with soft sounds.

The Face of Grace‘ has a rather sombre start. The atmosphere changes as the tempo increases, the somberness decreases. There is a lot of variation in tempo, volume, and instruments, but the balance remains constant. This last song ends with sampled sounds of murmuring water.

These seven songs come into their own when you listen with the headphones. It encourages you to listen intensively to all details and special instruments. At the same time, these complex compositions feel very comfortable and soothing. The sound quality is sublime, and everything is superbly distributed over the headphones.
Every now and then an album comes out of which I say: “World out, music on! Sanctum is a fantastic album that fits in this category. This is without a doubt one of the best instrumental albums ever.
