Flaming Row – The Pure Shine

Het slot nummer is ‘The Gunslinger’s Creed’, eindigt mooi ingetogen.

‘The Pure Shine’ is dus een volwaardig dubbelalbum.

Flaming Row – The Pure Shine

The Pure Shine‘ is a prog/folk CD based on the books ‘The Dark Tower’ by Stephen King. Flaming Row is a German band, consisting of vocalist/ versatile guitarist Martin Schnella. Next to the ‘normal’ acoustic and electric guitar, he also plays the 12 string version of both. Besides that, Marek Arnold plays various keyboards and saxophones. Moreover, a large number of guest musicians participate, including drummer Jimmy Keegan (Pattern Seeking Animals) and bassist Dave Meros (Spock’s Beard). Several guest singers are well known, I will mention two: Johan Hallgren (Pain of Salvation) and Glynn Morgan (Threshold).

In the quiet intro of ‘A Tower In The Clouds‘ several string instruments play an important role. Despite the quietness, there are several twists and various layers in the music. A few spoken sentences are an introduction to the story. The turn to more power forms a nice mix of rock with classical elements. In a quiet part there is the solo vocals of Melanie Mau. She has a characteristic, somewhat sharp sounding voice. Not everyone will be a lover of this. There are more voices, they sing (a cappella), against each other. This is well distributed over the headphones.

The singing in ‘The Last Living Member‘ is easy to understand, but if you don’t know the books, it takes a while before you’re ‘inside the story’. The multiple voices of the lead singers blend well together. With the powerful sung words, the music has more power. Vocals and music are therefore in balance. Sometimes the organ playing has a wonderful ’70s style. At the end vocals are combined with beautiful piano sounds.

Jake’s Destiny‘ contains beautiful instrumental pieces in which light rocking and folk elements. The quiet piece on the dividing line from the instrumental second part to part three is super! In this third part Jake is calmly warned that children like him will be stolen. The music remains quiet for a while. Several voices sing some sentences, now the characters are mentioned in the lyric booklet.

Rocking guitar playing is alternated with acoustic parts. The difference in volume is wide, also the number of layers changes. There are also regularly folk elements woven into it. There are numerous twists and details in the music. Because of this diversity, all tracks are fascinating. In the song lyrics, fans will hear various references to the book. For those who are not familiar with the books or the film, it may be difficult to understand the whole story. But gradually you get into the story. This isn’t a song a long album, yet you sing along with the final lyrics of ‘The Final Attempt‘. The final song is ‘The Gunslinger’s Creed‘, ends nicely subdued.

In parts of the vocals there is a bit too little variation in emotion. With more emotion, you could have empathized better with the story. One voice will be appreciated a bit more than the other. Vocal parts are interspersed with beautiful instrumental pieces. This makes me curious about the instrumental version.

CD 2
The clear sound of the strings and the piano playing touches me again in this opening track. If you just listened to CD 1, you might miss the vocals in several songs. Or are you waiting for the insertion of the voice (s) after an instrumental piece.
But if you can release this, you can totally immerse yourself in the music. Now you don’t have to understand lyrics or have to follow a storyline, so you can listen in a different way. Now that you only hear music, it’s extra noticeable how complex everything is,
Fierce bass grooves versus the high tones of the other instruments sometimes form a contrast.
Such differences / contrasts also exist in the number of layers and in the volume of the music. Sometimes in a minimalist piece, you can hear fingers gliding over the strings of a guitar. Several sudden twists create an ‘ear-catcher’. The music is beautiful, you can hear a whole range of instruments: saxophones, strings, various keyboard instruments, flutes, Irish bagpipes, percussion and of course bass and various guitars. This is forged into pure, complex prog. With unnatural rhythms complex melodies. Some parts are so special that they feel like improvisation. The details are fantastic, for example of the cello, with its warm, low sound. In short, it remains fascinating to listen to.
Not for everyone the music will feel like a story, but that’s not distracting.
The listening experience of this CD is totally different from CD 1.
It is a good choice of Flaming Row to add this instrumental CD. Not often does an instrumental version of a vocal CD come into its own as well as here. So ‘The Pure Shine‘ is a worthy double album.
