Doug Woods en Colin Powell mengen ‘echte instrumenten met de iOS/i Pad muziek’. ‘Vikings’ is hun nieuwste album, hierin staat de mythologie/kosmologie van de Vikingen centraal. De Vikingen geloofde dat er in het begin de Ginnungagap (een chaotische leegte) was. Hieruit groeide de wereldboom ‘Yggdrasil’, deze bestond uit negen werelden. Aan de top bevond zich de oer wereld van ijs, Niflheim. Daaronder stond Muspelheim, de oer wereld van vuur. Het ijs en het vuur kropen naar het centrum van de leegte, ze raakten elkaar. Hierdoor ontstond de reus Ymir. Na zijn dramatische dood werd zijn lichaam omgevormd tot de aarde (inclusief wolken en sterren). Daarnaast ontstonden de werelden van de reuzen, de elfen en van de dwergen.
De rustige, symfonische start van ‘Ginnungagap – The Chaotic Void’ heeft een licht filmisch karakter. Langzaam sterft dit weg en maakt plaats voor een vleugje rock. Meerdere wendingen volgen elkaar langzaam op. Het geheel heeft een aangename, zachtaardige melodie.
In ’Yggdrasil – The World Tree’ worden pianoklanken afgewisseld met enkele folkloristische elementen. De geluidskwaliteit is mooi helder, waardoor vooral het gitaarspel prima tot zijn recht komt. Bovendien zijn de laagjes goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Ook ‘Niflheim – The Primordial World of Ice’ is sferisch. Er is een geluid toegevoegd wat aan een ijzige wind doet denken. Zo proberen Doug en Colin met soundscapes het verhaal te laten leven. Dat doen ze op een toegankelijke manier, al zal lang niet iedereen het verhaal voor zich zien gebeuren.
Het lage, langzame intro van ‘Jotunheim – The World of the Giants’ past bij de reuzen. Heel even wordt de muziek iets lichter en sneller, om daarna weer te vertragen. Het geluid van ‘pauken’ past erbij, maar had intenser gemogen. Daarna is ‘Alfheim – The World of the Elves’ minder sprankelend dat je zou kunnen vermoeden als je aan elfjes denkt. In sommige stukken ligt het tempo wel redelijk hoog.
‘Svartalfheim – The World of the Dwarves’ start met een aangenaam percussie intro en heerlijke bas grooves. De ‘strijkers’ zorgen voor een heldere melodie. De wending is abrupt, maar gaaf. Na een serie elektronische klanken keert de percussie van het begin terug.
Het rijk van de (verschillende) Goden wordt natuurlijk niet overgeslagen. In ‘Asgard – The Realm of the Aesir’ hoor je het geluid van een hoge dames stem. Haar woordeloze klanken vormen een prima uitbreiding van de muziek, waarin de piano ook een mooie rol heeft. De stemming is dromerig. De percussie in ‘Midgard – The World of Humans’ is vrij klinisch van geluid en daardoor wat te overheersend. Het haalt te veel aandacht weg van het gitaarspel.
‘Valhalla – The Hall of the Fallen’. Valhalla was de Hemel van de Vikingen. Hier gingen de krijgsheren naar toe die op het slagveld gesneuveld waren, en ging men door met vechten en drinken. De binding met het slagveld is door het marstempo duidelijk. In de muziek zit iets meer dramatiek, al zorgt fluitspel voor lichtere elementen. Wie geen eervolle dood stierf ging naar ‘Helheim’. De eerste minuut van ‘Escape from Helheim – The World of the Dishonourable Dead’ is bijna macaber te noemen. Daarna komt de rock erbij. ‘Ragnarok – The Final Battle’ gaat over het gevecht tussen reuzen. Hierdoor werd het leven grotendeels vernietigd en ontstond er een ‘Nieuwe Aarde’ uit zee.
Bij Vikingen denk je misschien aan ruige stoere mannen, waardoor je zwaardere rock met dramatische en/of theatrale stukken verwacht. De muziek is echter overwegend vriendelijk van karakter. De verhaallijn is hierdoor minder duidelijk, maar ‘Vikings’ is wel toegankelijk!

Doug Woods and Colin Powell mix ‘real instruments with the iOS/i Pad music’. Vikings‘ is their latest album, focusing on the mythology/cosmology of the Vikings. The quiet, symphonic start of ‘Ginnungagap – The Chaotic Void‘ has a slightly cinematic character. Slowly this dies away and makes way for a touch of rock. Several turns slowly follow each other. The whole has a pleasant, gentle melody.
In ‘Yggdrasil – The World Tree‘ piano sounds are alternated with some folkloristic elements. The sound quality is beautifully clear, so that especially the guitar playing comes into its own. Moreover, the layers are well distributed over the headphones. Also ‘Niflheim – The Primordial World of Ice‘ is spherical. A sound has been added that reminds of an icy wind. Doug and Colin try to make the story live with soundscapes. They do this in an accessible way, although not everyone will see the story happen in front of them.
The low, slow intro of ‘Jotunheim – The World of the Giants‘ suits the giants. For a moment the music becomes a bit lighter and faster, only to slow down again. The sound of ’timpani’ fits in, but would have been more intense. After that ‘Alfheim – The World of the Elves‘ is less sparkling that you might suspect when you think of fairies. In some pieces the tempo is quite high.
Svartalfheim – The World of the Dwarves‘ starts with a pleasant percussion intro and lovely bass grooves. The ‘strings’ provide a clear melody. The turn is abrupt, but cool. After a series of electronic sounds the percussion returns from the beginning.
The realm of the (different) Gods is of course not skipped. In ‘Asgard – The Realm of the Aesir‘ you hear the sound of a high female voice. Her wordless sounds are an excellent extension of the music, in which the piano also has a nice role. The mood is dreamy. The percussion in ‘Midgard – The World of Humans‘ is quite clinical of sound and therefore a bit too dominant. It takes too much attention away from guitar playing.
Valhalla – The Hall of the Fallen‘. Valhalla was the Heaven of the Vikings. Here the warlords who had died on the battlefield went, and they continued to fight and drink. The connection with the battlefield is clear from the pace of the march. There is a little more drama in the music, although flute playing creates lighter elements. Those who did not die an honourable death went to ‘Helheim‘. The first minute of ‘Escape from Helheim – The World of the Dishonourable Dead‘ is almost macabre. Then comes the rock. Ragnarok – The Final Battle‘ is about the battle between giants. This largely destroyed life and created a ‘New Earth‘ from the sea.
When you think of Vikings you might think of rough tough men, so you expect heavier rock with dramatic and/or theatrical pieces. The music however is mostly friendly in character. The storyline is therefore less clear, but ‘Vikings‘ is accessible!
