De Zweedse prog band Blå Lotus bestaat zo’n drie jaar. Ze hebben zich laten inspireren door de oude prog bands zoals Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, Black Sabbath e.v.a. Het bijzondere aan dit trio is dat ze géén gitaar gebruiken. Met bas, toetsen, Theremin en fluit creëren ze een eigen sound. Deze gaat globaal van soundscapes tot aan heavy stoner. Högtid is hun tweede (ditigale) album. Högtid is het Zweedse woord voor feest/viering. Toch is het geen conceptalbum.

De jaren 70 inspiratie komt al bij het intro van ‘Pagan Solstice’ naar voren. De resonantie in een drum past hier prima bij. In eerste instantie vloeien de wendingen vrij geleidelijk in elkaar over, het tempo blijft redelijk hoog. Na ruim twee minuten is er voor het eerst zang te horen. De muziek is nu rustiger. De stem van Fredrik Andersson klinkt licht vervormd. Hij is niet zo goed te verstaan, maar zijn stem versmelt perfect met de muziek. Zo nu en dan dwarrelt er fluitspel tussendoor. Er is aangenaam veel toetsenwerk te horen, soms klinkt dit pompeus, maar er zitten ook rustigere stukjes tussen. Tussen dit alles zitten leuke details, bijvoorbeeld door percussie. Het tempo is regelmatig strak en opzwepend. De opbouw naar het einde is gaaf, er wordt vlak voor het einde nog een korte rust ingelast. Deze openingstrack is onvoorspelbaar en boeiend.

Ook in ‘Unreal Estate’ zijn de toetsen (door Fredrik) goed vertegenwoordigd. Blå Lotus heeft een eigen stijl, maar toch zijn er raakvlakken met old school prog bands zoals ‘Twenty Sixty Six And Then’. De drumstijl van Wiktor Nydén is goed, hij speelt soms snel en licht. Deze track lijkt te eindigen, naar het is een wending. Na stukje met vrij veel herhalingen is de vertraging super ingelast. De opbouw naar het einde is prima!

Het intro van ‘While You Were Asleep’ is merkwaardig, maar boeiend. Dat boeiende vervaagt iets omdat het vervolg minder verrassend is. Toch is ook dit een goede opgebouwde en gevarieerde track.

Delen van ‘Gånglåt’ voelen door de aparte geluiden aan als improvisatie. De muziek is heerlijk ruw en ongepolijst, en vaak snel gespeeld.

‘Summer Demons’ start wat bombastisch, vrij snel gaat dit over naar een kort, rustig stukje. Tempo en volume worden langzaam weer opgeschroefd, de bas van Linus Karlsson is duidelijk aanwezig. Hoewel de zang wat op de achtergrond klinkt, is het wel in balans met het geheel. De mix van ‘70’s sound met de meer elektronische kant dan de toetsen is goed gekozen. Even zijn de herhalingen net iets te veel. De opbouw naar het einde toe is boeiend.

Toetsen spelen weer prominente rol in ‘Rats’n Brats’. Regelmatig ligt het tempo flink hoog. De tracks sluiten prima op elkaar aan. Maar er had iets meer variatie in mogen zitten Toch is dit vrolijke nummer anders dan de voorgaande.

Bepaalde kleur klanken van de toetsen komen in bijna alle nummers terug. Het is allemaal goed gespeeld, maar er zijn net te weinig verrassende momenten/wendingen. Toch zijn de lange instrumentale stukken aangenaam om geconcentreerd naar te luisteren, steeds hoor je weer nieuwe dingen. Daardoor duurt het een hele tijd voor je de nummers een beetje kent. De inspiratie komt duidelijk uit de jaren ’70, toch heeft Blå Lotus een eigen geluid. ‘Högtid’ sluit dus aan bij liefhebbers van old school prog die ook van eigentijdse inbreng houden.

The Swedish prog band Blå Lotus exists about three years. The 70’s of inspiration can be found in the intro to ‘Pagan Solstice‘. The resonance in a drum fits perfectly with this. Initially, the twists and turns flow into each other fairly gradually, the pace remains fairly high. After more than two minutes you can hear vocals for the first time. The music is calmer now. The voice of Fredrik Andersson sounds slightly transformed. He is not very easy to understand, but his voice blends perfectly with the music. Every once in a while flute plays in between. There is a pleasant amount of keyboards to be heard, sometimes this sounds pompous, but there are also quieter pieces in between. Between all this there are nice details, for example by percussion. The tempo is regularly tight and exciting. The build-up to the end is cool, there is a short rest just before the end. This opening track is unpredictable and fascinating.

Also in ‘Unreal Estate‘ the keys (by Fredrik) are well represented. Blå Lotus has its own style, but still there are similarities with old school prog bands like ‘Twenty Sixty Six And Then’. Wiktor Nydén’s drum style is good, he sometimes plays fast and light. This track seems to end, but it is a twist. After a bit with a lot of repetitions, the delay is super contained. The build-up to the end is fine!

The intro of ‘While You Were Asleep‘ is remarkable, but fascinating. That captivating blurs a little because the follow-up is less surprising. Still, this is also a well built and varied track.

Parts of ‘Gånglåt‘ feel like improvisation because of the separate sounds. The music is wonderfully rough and unpolished, and often played fast.

Summer Demons‘ starts a somewhat bombastic, pretty soon it changes to a short, quiet piece. Tempo and volume are slowly increased again, the bass of Linus Karlsson is clearly present. Although the vocals sound a bit in the background, they are in balance with the whole. The mix of ’70’s sound with the more electronic side than the keys is well chosen. For a moment the repetitions are just a little too much. The build-up towards the end is fascinating.

Keys play a prominent role in ‘Rats’n Brats‘. Regularly the tempo is quite high. The tracks fit perfectly together. But it could have been a bit more varied. Still, this cheerful song is different from the previous one.

Certain color sounds of the keys appear in almost all songs. It’s all well played, but there are just too few surprising twists and turns. Still, the long instrumental pieces are pleasant to listen to in a concentrated way, always you hear new things. That’s why it takes a long time before you know the songs a bit.
