Drie jaar na het album ‘The Source’ komt Ayreon 25 september met de opvolger ‘Transitus’. Deze keer heeft Arjen Lucassen geen science fiction thema uitgekozen, maar een gotisch spookverhaal dat zich gedeeltelijk in de 19e eeuw afspeelt. In dit verhaal hoor je elementen van horror en het bovennatuurlijke. Het aantal zanger en zangeressen is, zoals altijd, groot. Ik noem er een paar: Simone Simons (Epica), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) en Marcela Bovio (MaYan). Gitarist Joe Satriani en Threshold drummer Johanne James horen bij de vele gastmuzikanten.

CD 1
Met ‘Fatum Horrificum’ heeft het album een spookachtige opening. De spanning in de muziek wordt opgebouwd, na zo’n anderhalve minuut begint verteller Tom Baker het verhaal met: “The year is 1884..” Tevens introduceert hij de hoofdpersonen, het echtpaar Abby en Daniel. Abby wordt gespeeld door Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber) en Daniel door Tommy Karevik (Kamelot).
Tom’s woorden worden ondersteund door mysterieuze muziek. Dat sluit aan bij de stijl van het verhaal.
Dit is duidelijk anders dan de science fiction van ‘The Source’. Arjen weet je al tijdens dit openingsnummer te verassen. Het klassiek georiënteerd instrumentaal stuk is mooi. De woordeloze zang en de koorzang is hier prachtig in verweven. Dit vormt een perfecte harmonie van een eeuwen oude sfeer vermengd met moderne elementen. Met vlagen heeft de muziek filmische allure. Er zijn diverse wendingen en talloze details, deze zijn zeer goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Met de gezongen dialoog begint het verhaal vorm te krijgen. De stemmen vullen elkaar prima aan.

Tom spreekt enkele zinnen, en het verhaal gaat verder met ‘Daniel’s Descent into Transitus’.
De strijkinstrumenten komen zo nu en dan mooi naar de voorgrond in dit vrij korte nummer zo nu en dan mooi naar de voorgrond.
In ’Listen to My Story’ is de sfeer vrolijker. Dit is zo anders dan de voorgaande nummers, en toch vormt het één geheel. De gestapelde stemmen vormen een perfecte blend.

Of de zang gestapeld is, of bijna solo, alle stemmen zijn prachtig. Het zal misschien even duren voordat de verhaallijn helemaal duidelijk is. Zeker als je zonder tekstboekje luistert. Maar ook dan word ik steeds weer geraakt door zoveel schoonheid in muziek en zang. Het aantal laagjes in zang en muziek is soms hoog. Bovendien is er diversiteit, zo hoor je folk invloeden in ‘Talk of the Town’. De lichte en luchtige sfeer in zang en muziek maakt langzaam plaats voor rock. De mix en afwisseling tussen deze twee stijlen is uitmuntend.
In ‘Old Friend’ hoor je pianospel en zang, beide zijn emotioneel. Dit komt door de subtiele toevoeging van de somber klinkende strijkers. Veel eerder dan verwacht gaat het verder met ‘Dumb Piece of Rock’. Dit heeft een echte Ayreon stijl, en daar geniet ik van. Dat gaat door in de twee nummers die hierna komen.

CD 2
Allerlei geluiden klinken samen met het verhaal van Tom bij aanvang van ‘Condemned Without A Trial’. De muziek die hierna volgt is weer echt Ayreon. Weer valt de fantastische combinatie van stemmen op.
De droevige muziek tijdens het intro van ‘Daniel’s Funeral’ is langzaam en laag. Hiertussen is hoge zang ingezet als instrument. Er volgt (subtiele) drama in zang en muziek. Het einde is plotseling, maar mooi.

In ‘Hopelessly Slipping Away’ is de muziek staccato, maar subtiel. Ook dit nummer heeft een prachtig einde.

In ‘Message from Beyond’ wordt er weer strak gespeeld. Dit basisritme is fantastisch en blijft lange tijd hetzelfde. Ondertussen is komen er steeds mee stemmen bij die om aandacht vragen. De veranderingen in de instrumenten zijn subtiel. Het basisritme blijft bestaan. Ondanks de vrij rustige muziek kom je bijna oren te kort, tegelijkertijd voelt het zo comfortabel om naar te luisteren. Hier is een meester componist aan het werk geweest!

Dat komt in eigenlijk alle nummers naar voren, maar vooral in ‘Inferno’. Het drumwerk is staccato, dit wordt gecombineerd met onder andere koorzang. Soms zingt dit koor één of enkele woorden, soms enkele zinnen. Iedere keer is het perfect gedoseerd. Weer is er de balans tussen heden en verleden.

Ook al kan je het verhaal (nog) niet helemaal volgen, dan word je toch gegrepen door de vele laagjes zang en muziek, en door de talloze details.

Tijdens ‘The Great Beyond’ voel je dat het verhaal gaan eindigen. Koorzang vormt de opbouw naar het einde. Dan ineens is het stil.. Wat een fantastisch einde!

‘Transitus’ is duidelijk een Ayreon album. Sommige stukken zijn echt verrassend, andere delen iets minder. Erg? Helemaal niet! Want Arjen heeft het weer geflikt: hij heeft, samen met de enorme line-up een zeer goed album gemaakt, waarin je steeds weer nieuwe dingen hoort.

Ayreon – Transitus

Three years after the album ‘The Source‘ Ayreon will release its successor ‘Transitus‘ on September 25th. This time Arjen Lucassen has not chosen a science fiction theme, but a gothic ghost story that partly takes place in the 19th century. In this story you hear elements of horror and the supernatural. The number of singer and singers is, as always, large. I’ll name a few: Simone Simons (Epica), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) and Marcela Bovio (MaYan). Guitarist Joe Satriani and Threshold drummer Johanne James are among the many guest musicians.

CD 1
With ‘Fatum Horrificum‘ the album has a spooky opening. The tension in the music builds up, after about a minute and a half narrator Tom Baker starts the story: “The year is 1884…” He also introduces the main characters, the couple Abby and Daniel. Abby is played by Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber) and Daniel by Tommy Karevik (Camelot).
Tom’s words are supported by mysterious music. That fits the style of the story.
This is significantly different from the science fiction of ‘The Source‘. Arjen knows how to surprise you during this opening song. The classically oriented instrumental piece is beautiful. The wordless singing and the choir are beautifully interwoven in it. This forms a perfect harmony of a centuries-old atmosphere mixed with modern elements. With gusts the music has cinematic allure. There are several twists and countless details, these are very well distributed over the headphones. With the sung dialogue the story begins to take shape. The voices complement each other very well.

Tom speaks a few sentences, and the story continues with ‘Daniel’s Descent into Transitus‘.
The string instruments come to the foreground nicely every now and then in this rather short song. In ‘Listen to My Story‘ the atmosphere is more cheerful. This is so different from the previous songs, and yet it forms one whole. The stacked voices form a perfect blend.

Whether the vocals are stacked, or almost solo, all voices are beautiful. It may take a while before the storyline is completely clear. Especially if you are listening without a textbook. But even then, you are touched over and over again by so much beauty in music and vocals. The number of layers in vocals and music is sometimes high. Moreover, there is diversity, as you can hear folk influences in ‘Talk of the Town‘. The light and friendly atmosphere in vocals and music slowly changes into rock. The mix and variety between these two styles is excellent.
In ‘Old Friend‘ you hear piano playing and vocals, both are emotional. This is due to the subtle addition of the gloomy sounding strings. Much sooner than expected it continues with ‘Dumb Piece of Rock’. This has a real Ayreon style, and I enjoy it. This will continue in the two songs that follow.

CD 2
All kinds of sounds merge with Tom’s story at the start of ‘Condemned Without A Trial‘. The music that follows is really Ayreon again. The fantastic combination of voices stands out again.
The sad music during the intro of ‘Daniel’s Funeral‘ is slow and low. In between, high vocals are used as an instrument. There follows (subtle) drama in vocals and music. The end is sudden, but beautiful.

In ‘Hopelessly Slipping Away‘ the music is staccato, but subtle. This song has a beautiful ending as well.

In ‘Message from Beyond‘ the music is played tight again. This basic rhythm is fantastic and stays the same for a long time. In the meantime, there are voices coming along that draw your attention. The changes in the instruments are subtle. The basic rhythm remains. Despite the rather quiet music, you almost need an extra pair of ears, but at the same time it feels so comfortable to listen to. A master composer has been working here!

That’s in fact in all songs, but especially in ‘Inferno‘. The drumming is staccato, this is combined with choral singing, among other things. Sometimes this choir sings one or a few words, sometimes a few sentences. Every time it is perfectly dosed. Again there is the balance between past and present.

Even if you can’t (yet) fully follow the story, you will still be captivated by the many layers of singing and music, and by the countless details.

During ‘The Great Beyond‘ you will feel that the story is about to end. Choral singing is the build-up to the end. Then suddenly it’s quiet… What a fantastic ending!

‘Transitus‘ is clearly an Ayreon album. Some pieces are really surprising, others parts a bit less. Too bad?? Absolutely not! Because Arjen did it again: he made, together with the huge line up, a very good album, in which you hear new things over and over again.
