Multi-instrumentalist Jack Kirby was nog maar 19 toen hij in 2011 een band oprichtte, toen onder de naam ‘Prophecy’.
Inmiddels heet deze prog metalband ‘Ark Ascent’, de basis voor dit debuutalbum werd verder uitgebouwd. ‘Downfall’ vertelt een verhaal: er vindt een ramp plaats, dit leidt tot vernietiging van de mensheid. Dit komt tot uiting in energieke nummers, zoals ‘Point of No Return’ maar ook melancholische intermezzo’s, waarvan ‘Farewell’ er één is.
‘Arrival’ start met mysterieuze geluiden. Het tempo wordt hoog en strak, de symfonische elementen blijven. Ook de drums zijn strak bespeeld, maar er zitten mooie accenten in. Deze instrumentale openingstrack zit goed in elkaar.
Aan het begin van ‘Point Of No Return’ ligt het tempo flink hoog, toch is zanger Rogue Marechal vrij goed te verstaan. Zijn stem is minder rond en vol dan je misschien zou verwachten in dit genre. De wending naar het klein gespeelde deel is totaal onverwacht en daarom zo gaaf. Het gitaarspel van Jack is hier meeslepend. Terug naar de metal: gitaar en bas klinken weer aangenaam zwaar. Dit vormt een mooi contrast met de hogere symfonische elementen. Nogmaals is er een klein gespeeld stuk, nu met piano. Hier klinkt wanhoop in de stem van Rogue, hij brengt zijn tekst overtuigend. Het plotselinge einde is mooi.
Tijdens de seconden van ‘Sanctuary’ lijkt het geluid ver weg. Na de wending is alles weer lekker dichtbij.
Vooral aan het begin van ‘Darkest Hour’ hoor je een muur van snaren. Als het tempo giga hoog ligt, blijft de melodie aanwezig.
Het pianospel in ‘Farewell’ is verrassend teder. Heel even loopt dit niet soepel, dat valt in rustige nummer wel op. De woorden klinken somber, dit past bij de tekst.
Het mooie ‘Downfall’ gaat over de vernietiging. Jammer dat er voor een fade out is gekozen, in plaats van ‘wegsterven’ op snaren of keyboard.
De opbouw van ‘Ascension’ voelt niet helemaal compleet.
In eerste instantie heeft ‘Innocence Lost’ wat weg van een classic rock ballad, maar dan komen de prog elementen erbij. Weer zijn er een ruim aantal wendingen, het klein gespeelde deel vertraagt mooi op het einde.
De tekst geeft ‘The Aftermath’ een negatief ‘toekomstbeeld’. Het aantal details in de muziek ligt hoog, niet alleen bas en gitaar, maar ook de drums doen hieraan mee. Vooral tijdens een instrumentaal stuk rol je van de ene wending in de andere. De ene verandering verloopt geleidelijk, de ander wat sneller.
Het rustige akoestische gitaarspel en de tekst in ‘Closer To Heaven’ dragen bij aan de verhaallijn van dit album. De kleine zang had meer emotie mogen bevatten.
‘The End Of Time’ is heel toepasselijk het laatste nummer, dit bevat veel laagjes en wendingen. Het gitaarspel gaat van licht en sprankelend, naar zwaar en duister. Ook de bas klinkt lekker zwaar. Delen van de muziek komen chaotisch over, maar dat past binnen het verhaal. Er komt dus veel op je af, ook fantastisch toetsenwerk. De symfonisch elementen zitten hier nog tussen geklemd. De verhouding tussen dit alles is prima. Deze gaaf opgebouwde epic sterft mooi weg.
Het geluid van ‘strijkinstrumenten’ klinkt een beetje kil. Niet alle nummers voelen compleet van begin tot en met het einde. Daardoor heeft de muziek geen filmische allure. Terwijl dat qua verhaallijn wel had gekund. Er is goed gespeeld met de verdeling in de boxen/koptelefoon. Bovendien hoor je veel mooie contrasten van bijvoorbeeld akoestisch gitaarspel versus gillend en/of zwaar klinkend gitaarspel. Daarnaast zijn er tegenstellingen tussen lage/zware tonen versus hoog/licht.
‘Downfall’ is een prima, toegankelijk debuutalbum. Al het artwork ziet er ook nog eens mooi uit.

At the beginning of ‘Point Of No Return‘ the tempo is quite high, yet singer Rogue Marechal is quite understandable. His voice is less round and full than you might expect in this genre. The turn to the small played part is totally unexpected and therefore so cool. Jack’s guitar playing is compelling here. Back to the metal: guitar and bass sound pleasantly heavy again. This forms a nice contrast with the higher symphonic elements. Once again there is a small piece played, now with piano. Here you can hear the desperation in the voice of Rogue, he brings his lyrics convincingly. The sudden end is beautiful.
During the seconds of ‘Sanctuary‘ the sound seems far away. After the turn, everything is nearby again.
Especially at the beginning of ‘Darkest Hour‘ you hear a wall of strings. When the tempo is giga high, the melody remains present.
The piano playing in ‘Farewell‘ is surprisingly tender. For a moment this doesn’t run smoothly, which is noticeable in a quiet song. The words sound depressing, this suits the text.
The beautiful ‘Downfall‘ is about destruction. Too bad that a fade out has been chosen, instead of ‘dying away‘ on strings or keyboard.
The construction of ‘Ascension‘ does not feel entirely complete.
Initially ‘Innocence Lost‘ looks a bit like a classic rock ballad, but then the prog elements are added. Again, there are a lot of twists and turns, the small played part is slowing down beautifully at the end.
The lyrics give ‘The Aftermath‘ a negative ‘vision of the future’. The number of details in the music is high, not only bass and guitar, but also the drums participate. Especially during an instrumental piece, you go from one turn to the other. Some changes are gradual, others are faster. The quiet acoustic guitar playing and the lyrics in ‘Closer To Heaven‘ contribute to the storyline of this album. The humble vocals should have contained more emotion.
‘The End Of Time‘ is very fittingly the last song, this contains many layers and twists. The guitar playing goes from light and sparkling, to heavy and dark. Also, the bass sounds pretty heavy. Parts of the music seem chaotic, but that fits within the story. So, there is a lot coming towards you, also fantastic keyboard work. The symphonic elements are still stuck between them. The ratio between all this is fine. This epic, which has been built up in a great way, is dying away nicely.
The sound of ‘string instruments’ sounds a bit chilly. Not all songs feel complete from beginning to end. That’s why the music has no cinematic allure. While that could have been done in terms of storyline. The distribution in the speakers/headphones was well played. Moreover, you can hear a lot of nice contrasts of for example acoustic guitar playing versus screaming and/or heavy sounding guitar playing. In addition, there are contrasts between low/heavy tones versus high/light.
Downfall‘ is a fine, accessible debut album. All the artwork looks great too.
