Ruim twintig jaar geleden zag de Cubaanse symfonische progband Anima Mundi het levenslicht. Hun vorige album werd in 2016 gelanceerd. ‘I me Myself’ was het eerste deel van een trilogie. Nu is de opvolger ‘Insomnia’ uit. Zanger Michel Bermudez is vervangen door Aivis Prieto. Daarnaast heeft Roberto Díaz ook een aandeel in de zang.
‘Citadel’ start alsof iemand op een oude radio naar een zender zoekt. Er volgt een experimenteel, instrumentaal stuk waarin volop lage (bas)tonen toe horen zijn. De geluidseffecten en alle extra’s zijn enorm belangrijk, ook tijdens de vocale stukken. Het lijkt dat er een opbouw naar het einde plaatsvindt, maar het is gave wending. Hoewel het tempo niet hoog ligt, zit het wel complex en bijzonder in elkaar. Het kan even duren voordat je deze epic (die uit drie delen bestaat) leert waarderen. Met regen en onweer gaat het non stop over naar ‘Nine Swans’. Met sferische muziek wordt er een vrij troosteloos beeld gecreëerd. De gezongen woorden klinken niet alleen mysterieus, ze zijn het ook. De overgang naar ‘Electric Credo’ is non-stop, maar je hoort hem wel. Qua sfeer sluit het aan bij het voorgaande nummer.
In ‘The Hunter’ is het geluid helder, waardoor de details op cimbalen mooi naar voren komen. De overige ingetogen muziek en de zang raken me. De toegevoegde geluideffecten zijn helder. Het geluid van een ‘fluit’ en ‘strijkers’ komt erbij, de balans blijft bestaan. Er is een goede opbouw naar het einde.
Aan het begin van de titeltrack hoor je ruisende geluiden. Dit ebt langzaam weg. Zang en fluisterende woorden klinken tegelijk. Het geluid van blazers is toegevoegd. De achtergrondzang prima aanvulling.
In ‘Electric Dreams’ hoor je een klok tikken, een hart kloppen, een telefoon die overgaat, en er wordt van tien naar één afgeteld. Het saxofoonspel is prachtig, rustig en experimenteel. Op de achtergrond zijn een politiesirene en een helikopter te horen. De muziek blijft minimalistisch en mysterieus. Op het eind wordt er een slot opengedraaid en een deur dichtgedaan.
‘The Wheel of Days’ is apart, maar boeiend. Door de saxofoon en ‘contrabas’ ontstaat er een jazzy sfeer. De herhalingen in de muziek worden even langdradig. Maar door een verandering hierin ben ik weer één en al oor. Vlak voor het einde zijn er allerlei details, waaronder het geluid van bar chimes te horen.
‘New Tribe’s Totem’ is een nummer van ruim tien minuten. Het heerlijke, licht gillende gitaarwerk had nog wat meer naar de voorgrond gemogen. De afwisseling met de elektro geluiden is prima gekozen. Bovendien hoor je vette bastonen en een lekkere uitgebreide saxofoon partij.
De mooie tekst van ‘Her Song’ is met emotie gezongen. Daar sluit de rustige muziek bij aan. Het geluid van de blazers past er prima bij. Doordat er hier weinig geluiden zijn toegevoegd, komt het zeer goede gitaarspel extra mooi tot zijn recht. Beter had dit album niet kunnen eindigen.
Een paar songteksten staan niet in de juiste volgorde in het (goed verzorgde) tekstboekje. Is dit per ongeluk of met opzet gedaan? Het album is opgedragen aan Heide Burgs, haar foto heeft een ereplaats in het tekstboekje. Sommige delen van de tekst en/of muziek komen een beetje zwaarmoedig over. Dat past misschien niet altijd bij je gemoedstoestand. Regelmatig weet je niet wat onder snaren, of toetsen vandaan komt. Of wat de geluideffecten zijn, want soms smelt er van alles samen. Voor sommigen zal de hoeveelheid geluidseffecten wat te veel zijn ten opzichte van de muziek. Maar hoe dan ook, ze bepalen wel het sfeerbeeld. En dat is prima gedaan.

Citadel‘ starts as if someone is looking for a station on an old radio. There follows an experimental, instrumental piece in which plenty of low (bass) tones are heard. The sound effects and all the extras are very important, also during the vocal pieces. It seems that there is a build-up towards the end, but it is a cool turn. Although the tempo is not high, it is complex and special. It may take some time before you learn to appreciate this epic (which consists of three movements). With rain and thunder the non stop goes over to ‘Nine Swans‘. With spherical music a rather desolate image is created. The sung words do not only sound mysterious, they are too. The transition to ‘Electric Credo‘ is non-stop, but you can hear it. In terms of atmosphere it matches the previous song.
In ‘The Hunter‘ the sound is clear, so the details on cymbals come out nicely. The other subdued music and vocals touch me. The added sound effects are clear. The sound of a ‘flute’ and ‘strings’ is added, the balance remains. There is a good build-up towards the end.
At the beginning of the title track you can hear rustling sounds. This slowly ebbs away. Singing and whispering words sound simultaneously. The sound of horns has been added. The background vocals are a good addition.
In ‘Electric Dreams‘ you hear a clock ticking, a heart beating, a phone ringing, and there is counted from ten to one. The saxophone playing is beautiful, quiet and experimental. In the background you can hear a police siren and a helicopter. The music remains minimalistic and mysterious. At the end a lock is turned open and a door is closed.
The Wheel of Days‘ is special, but fascinating. The saxophone and ‘double bass’ create a jazzy atmosphere. The repetitions in the music become equally lengthy. But because of a change in this, I am one and all ear again. Just before the end there are all kinds of details to be heard, including the sound of bar chimes.
New Tribe’s Totem‘ is a song of over ten minutes. The delicious, slightly screaming guitar skills could have been even more prominent. The alternation with the electro sounds is well chosen. Moreover, you hear fat bass tones and a nice extensive saxophone part.
The beautiful lyrics of ‘Her Song‘ are sung with emotion. The quiet music fits in with this. The sound of the horns fits perfectly. Because there are few sounds added here, the very good guitar playing comes into its own. This album could not have ended better.
A few lyrics are not in the right order in the (well-kept) textbooklet. Was this done accidentally or intentionally? The album is dedicated to Heide Burgs, her photo has a place of honour in the lyrics booklet. Some parts of the lyrics and / or music appear a bit gloomy. That may not always fit your mood. Regularly you do not know what under strings, or keys comes from. Or what the sound effects are, because sometimes everything melts together. For some, the amount of sound effects will be a bit too much compared to the music. But anyway, they do determine the atmosphere. And that’s fine.
