Angels – Heaven’s Lore Part One

Angels Take Me Home’ start mysterieus.

Angels- Heaven’s Lore Part One

Doug Woods and Colin Powell release several digital albums a year together. Moreover, they have so many musical projects together that it’s hard to keep track of how many there are. This time they ‘operate’ under the band/project name Angels. The belief in angels is old and multicultural, and contains great differences in religions and spiritual paths. The word angels come from the Greek word “engelos“, which means “messenger“. Belief in angels existed for thousands of years before our era.

Certain sounds in ‘Behold the Face of God‘ could almost be described as wordless singing of angels. Later this will be complemented by some piano sounds. The atmosphere is magical. You might expect a long track, but within two minutes this opening track ends.

In ‘Magnum Mysterium (The Great Mystery)‘ the rhythm is a bit too dominant compared to the guitar playing. Some pieces of music sound quite electronic, yet spherical elements are interwoven. Every now and then the guitar comes a little to the forefront. The electric sounds are sometimes quite high, this sharp tone color may not be nice for everyone to listen to.

Fields of Elysium‘ starts with calming tones. The ‘drumming’ is a bit clinical and takes away a little too much attention from the guitar playing that sometimes consists of several layers. The ‘choir singing’ is without words, but is nicely added. The music is not so compelling that you are completely taken along. This is also the case in the songs that follow. The sound of the keys, electronic or otherwise, is important. Because of their Ambient rock the setup is largely slow, moreover they create soundscapes. Yet they know how to incorporate all kinds of details in this. Here and there, there’s a bit more spirit in it. This usually comes from the guitar playing, but the balance remains intact. The distribution in the headphones has been well thought out.

At the beginning of ‘When an Angel Weeps‘ the electronic sounds have been replaced by piano. Little by little layers of music are added, including guitar playing. The percussion prevents this song from getting under my skin. When the ‘drums’ keep quiet, some light classical elements can be heard.

In each track there are some nice things, like the sound of a ‘xylophone’ in ‘Under Angel Moon’. Here the rock is a bit heavier than expected that fits perfectly in the whole.
In ‘Beneath the Angels‘ the rhythm pushes the melody back a bit, especially when the rhythm sounds a bit cloudy.

Angels Take Me Home‘ starts mysteriously. Slowly this atmosphere disappears, yet this final song is still fascinating. The build-up to the end is quite short.

These instrumental songs are generally quiet, but they are certainly not too sweet. In several songs the ‘drums’ are quite static and/or electronic. This is not a reproach, but maybe not everyone is charmed by this.
Regularly there are a number of repetitions/resemblances in melody or rhythm. The variation is under some pressure, it seems as if they have played a bit on safe. Real instruments, including guitar, are mixed with iOS music. Especially Doug Wood is an iOS and iPad wizard. This gives you a blend of all kinds of music and sounds, the origin of which can sometimes hardly be traced.
