Alan Parsons – The Secret

Zijn nieuwste album heet ‘The Secret’.

Miracle’ is heel anders.

Beyond the Years of Glory’ zacht en intens gezongen, de breekbare stem van PJ Olsson raakt me meteen.

‘The Secret’ is een divers album. In ‘Requiem’ hoor je invloeden van een ‘bigband’ van decennia geleden, terwijl onder andere ‘Fly to Me’ nogal zoet is. De verschillende leadzangers zijn totaal niet storend. Het aantal laagjes is enorm, toch luistert het geheel gemakkelijk weg.

Alan Parsons – The Secret

Alan Parson is an icon in the prog world. His latest album is called ‘The Secret‘. There are a lot of guest musicians participating, and not the least of them! For example, singer Jason Mraz and singer/guitar virtuoso Steve Hackett.

Besides music Alan has another big hobby: magic. Alan is so good, that he helped writing and composing instruction manuals for magic tricks. An album with magical influences was a logical move. This brings him back to pop rock, of course with symphonic and progressive elements.

Clear and soft music is the first thing you hear. It feels like a sweet fairy waving a magic wand. ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice‘ remains light and sparkling for a while. Then the classical elements are added. In the beginning light and pretty fast, later slower. The tempo increases again, and rock is added. Here you might recognize the style of Steve Hackett. Classical and rock forms a perfect harmony during this instrumental song. The sound quality is very good, so that the many layers come into their own. The classical music is sometimes fast, and tends towards the chaotic, but the balance remains intact. The turn towards minimalism is grandiose, now the music is soft but intense. The build-up to the end is short but powerful

Miracle‘ is very different. First by the light poppy music, second by the vocals, here by Jason Mraz.

The start of ‘One Note Symphony‘ is special, this can go in all sorts of ways. Various instruments, including wind instruments and guitars, are interspersed with strings in an accessible way. The added sampling is in the background, it consists of sounds and spoken words. The whole is sublimely distributed over the headphones. The orchestral structure is beautiful. The vocals are distorted and sound ‘robotic’. The sound of a rocket leaving fits in perfectly, although the sound with the headphones is slightly less pleasant.

Sometimes‘ has a calm start. Lou Gramm (Foreigner) sings his lyrics convincingly. The words are not too complicated, so you can sing parts after listening to them a few times. The strings form a unity with the rest of the music. The compelling guitar playing, and the small part played at the end are excellent.
In ‘Soirée Fantastique‘ you can hear melancholy in vocals and music, sometimes with a touch of French influences. The multiple voices colour together nicely. The pop-rock and classical elements form a fine blend.

Beyond the Years of Glory‘ sung softly and intensely, the fragile voice of PJ Olsson touches me immediately. After a somewhat sweet part, the instrumental part becomes a bit spicier. As soon as PJ Olsson starts singing again, the tempo and volume of the music drop, sadness seems to sound through. Towards the end vocals and music become sweeter again. Also ‘The Limelight Fades Away‘ is sometimes a bit on the sweet side, the rocking elements partly break through this.

The opening track made the most impression, not that the rest was really disappointing. Yet the magic is a bit less present than expected. ‘The Secret‘ is a diverse album. In ‘Requiem‘ you can hear influences of a ‘big band’ from decades ago, while ‘Fly to Me‘ is rather sweet. The different lead singers are not disturbing at all. The number of layers is enormous, yet the whole thing listens away easily.
